Unfortunately this is not always possible. We have to work and we cannot just stay at home because we cannot face the world. </p> <p>A recent study shows that workers that started their day in a bad mood was affected the whole day, and could not cope with certain things during the day. Workers who woke up in a bad mood didn’t change their attitudes during the whole day and pretty much stayed in a bad mood the whole day. </p> <p>Weirdly enough, the workers in a bad mood who came into contact with customers in a positive mood were not affected at all, but when they came into contact with a negative customer it actually made them feel more positive. </p> <blockquote>"We call it the 'misery loves company' effect. If you're in a bad mood, it seems to help to talk to someone else who is feeling as bad as you. Maybe the employees were able to blow off some steam by reacting to rude customers." </blockquote> <h2>How does a bad mood affect your work performance?</h2> <p><br></p> <p>A bad mood affects your work negatively. Your feelings impact everything, from your ability to work with others to making effective decisions. Negativity also has an impact on your creativity. </p> <p>Negative people are often rude and inconsiderate and this will obviously interfere with your work performance. </p> <p>Negativity in the workplace can also result in bullying co-workers and we all know how that can play out. Bullies are driven by a need to control. A bully in a bad mood could result in the misuse of power and victims may experience low self-esteem and sleep deprivation which in turn could affect their work performance. Ultimately this is a vicious circle that could result in workers being absent and basically bringing a business to its knees. </p> <h2>How can you change the way you feel so that it doesn’t affect your work performance?</h2> <p><br></p> <ul> <li>If you are in a bad mood,<strong> listen to music</strong> on your way to work that makes you happy. Music has a magical effect on our moods and can often make us feel happy or sad. </li> <li><strong>Take a stroll in nature early in the morning</strong>. There is nothing like fresh air and nature that puts you in a better mood. </li> <li><strong>Eat something different for breakfast</strong>. It often helps to change your routine as it slightly confuses the brain because you are not giving it what it’s used to. Fruit and vegetables for breakfast is a great way to get in your daily shot of vitamins. </li> <li><strong>Force yourself to smile</strong>. Even a forced smile is better than no smile. Smiling at someone else walking past you can at least brighten up their day even though you might not feel it. </li> <li><strong>Take a different route to work or change your transport method.</strong> Take the bus instead of your own car.
