You and your friends go camping/rock-climbing/hiking. You only have the basics with you so that you can be comfortable. You have limited supplies because it is too heavy to carry. One of your friends slip and hits his leg/head on a rock. Blood is spurting everywhere and everyone else goes into panic mode.

What do you do?

You don’t have access to your cell phone and you are nowhere near any medical facility/doctor. You are the only one that could either help yourself, or your friend.

What do you do in a situation like this?

There is no time for you to also break down and sit crying in a corner. If you are the only chance the other person has then it is time to put on your adult shoes and safe a life!

For any situation where there is blood involved it is important to stop the bleeding first. Too much blood loss could mean that your friend goes into shock and can ultimately die.

Here are some basic steps to stop bleeding:

Make sure the person is in a comfortable position. Access the wound and wipe it clean if possible. Make sure that whatever you use to wipe is as clean as possible. Any dirt or germs can go into the wound and cause a greater infection.

Use a little bit of water to clean the wound if you don’t have anything else available. Apply pressure to the wound. Pressure can help stop the bleeding and ultimately save your friend’s life.

Once the bleeding has stopped, use a piece of material to tie around the wound. Make sure to secure blood flow as you don’t want to cut off circulation.

If your friend is able to walk, try not to let him/her put any pressure on their leg. Get your friends to build some form of a stretcher to carry him/her out if needed. It is often amazing what you can come up with if you are in an emergency situation. Remember this is a matter of life and death. If your friend loses consciousness do not move any further. Send someone to go and find help or get someone to stay with the wounded person and go and find help yourself.

This situation might seem dramatic but many accidents do happen and this was just one possible scenario.

It is vital for you to know the basics in medical care to ensure survival. If you go on a trip where an injury might take place, what do you need to carry with you in a basic survival kit?

1.	Bandages

2.	Super glue

3.	Antiseptic cream

4.	Needle and thread

5.	Anti-allergy medication

6.	Plasters

7.	Condoms- not for the reason you think!

8.	Small scissor

9.	Knife

10. Pain medication and antibiotics

11.	Cell phone with solar charger.

Bandages are very helpful in a situation like this. A bandage is usually sterilized and sealed, and it might help you to keep the wound clean and prevent infection.

Super-glue can help seal off a wound. Instead of putting your friend through the agony of trying to put in stitches rather use super-glue. Clean the wound then apply some super glue and press together. It works just as well as stitches if not better and it seals off the wound for any further infection.

Antiseptic cream can be applied to any wound after it is cleaned. It is basically just to prevent further infection or at least help fight off the infection.

Needle and thread- If the wound is too big to close up with super-glue, then putting in stitches can help. This might be agonizing for your friend, but if there is no other choice, do what you have to do!

Anti-allergy medication is vitally important on any trip. An antihistamine can be the main thing that could save the life of a friend. If your friend is allergic to insect bites, or even a bee-sting then one tablet could safe his/her life until you get to a hospital.

Plasters – These can be used to cover a wound and for blisters on your feet if needed.

Condoms seal anything and if you are in a situation where your water bottle is no longer usable, you can use a condom to fill up with water and put it in your sock. The sock will prevent the condom from tearing and it makes a neat water bottle in emergency situations.

Scissors can be used to cut anything to the desired size. You don’t want to waste a big plaster on a tiny wound. Cut the plaster to the desired size and use the rest later.

Knives can be used for cutting and self-defense. You might need to kill a snake or hunt for food or even build a shelter.

Pain medication speaks for itself. Your friend might be in great pain and it could just take off the edge.

Antibiotics could also save your friend’s life. It could help you stop an infection before it starts.

Cell phone with solar charger can be used to phone for help. You will be surprised as to how far you will get a signal at times. It might not be in your close vicinity but move around and check regularly to see where you can find signal.

People have done extremely weird things to ensure survival. You might be one of the lucky ones, but if you take all situations into consideration before you go on your trip it might be a wonderful experience.

That's a pretty interesting list of tips! I mean, I'm in the first aid society for some time and no one ever said about the condom hack.

Well, it's still the best if no one needs to do anything mentioned above...it's not going to be fun. Stay safe :)
