Things you don't learn in school! How to concentrate and focus better.

https://thepreachersword.files.wordpress.com/2018/04/focus.jpg

"I used to think the human brain was the most fascinating part of the body, and then I realized, 'What is telling me that?'" - Emo Phillips

We have all been there before! We are busy with one task but we are just too distracted to focus on one specific thing. There are so many things going on in our lives that we struggle to focus and often leave something unfinished because we just cannot concentrate.

Even though there are legit times when it is just impossible to focus or concentrate, there are ways for us to improve our concentration in normal situations.

This do take practice and obviously cannot be achieved in one day, but over time if you keep on practicing you should learn to focus and concentrate better.

How to learn how to concentrate

It is important to look at your environment. Where do you work? If you are in a busy office, there will be many distractions. Your co-workers talk and if you are easily distracted and this could mean nonproductive work.

If it is at all possible, move to a quieter spot in the office, and if you have a door, close it. Offices are more open these days, so most likely you won’t be able to close the door, so you have to find another way to keep your concentration.

Make sure you sit comfortably. If you don’t sit comfortably then find someplace else to sit or get a different chair. A comfortable chair will make you feel more relaxed.

Create a playlist and work with earphones. If you can listen to music while you work then you won’t be easily distracted. Just make sure the music relaxes and calms you. Use classical music with no words so you don’t unexpectedly start singing loudly in the office and really make a fool of yourself.

Switch off your devices. A phone is just a distraction, so switch it off and stop worrying about it. We have become way too dependent on our technological devices and to take a break from technology and do you the world of good.

You can catch up a bit later AFTER you have completed your task if you struggle with FOMO. (Fear of missing out.)

Make sure you are not hungry or thirsty. Drink a glass of water before you start working and make sure you are not hungry. This will only distract you because you will only think of your hunger instead of focusing on your work.

Make a list of things you should do. It is important to know exactly what is expected from you. If you first have to figure out what you are supposed to do it can take a long time for you to start working.

Make sure you have all stationary etc. available when you start working. You cannot concentrate if you have to look for stuff in between your work.

Set a pace. You cannot concentrate on one task for more than half an hour. Set an alarm for exactly 30 minutes. During the 30 minutes try and do as much as possible. If the alarm goes off, get up and take a walk. By doing this you train yourself to work when you are supposed to work. If you remember Pavlov’s experiment then this is exactly what you are doing. You are training yourself to focus for a specific time.

Take frequent breaks. It is vital that you take sufficient breaks in between your work. Try to go outside for a little bit of fresh air and just stretch your legs. Do not take a longer break than five minutes. Go back to what you were doing immediately and start working again.

@free-reign ·
I'v never set an alarm to remind myself to take a break, but I have always been mindful that I need them, and I take breaks regularly, when my body and mind sound the alarm. It's worked for me, but I'm sure some people could do better with scheduling an actual alarm to force a break, as you suggest.

Over the years I found taking a short walk away from a desk every hour helps.

Ideas here are good reminders in keeping concentration levels up, something one does tend to run low on every so often, have a wonderful day!

I enjoyed reading this from top to bottom. I'm the mother of procrastinators and it's really hard for me to get it going. Once I do I'm the best, it's just so hard for me to get my mind in one spot. I'll take this piece of advice literally. Best regards champ!

@plantstoplanks ·
Some great tips! I find that setting a time limit on tasks is immensely helpful. Otherwise it really is so easy to muddle through the day without actually getting anything done! Though I also have a hard time concentrating if I'm hungry, so I make sure to do the most important things of the day after meals. My brain definitely works harder when it has fuel, haha!
