<h2>What is addiction?</h2>
<p><br></p>
<p>Addiction is the overuse of a substance or a behavior even though there are consequences to their actions. &nbsp;Addiction may involve medication or alcohol and it also includes hard-drugs and nicotine. &nbsp;Addiction include behaviors like gambling.&nbsp;</p>
<p>In today’s life people want to feel happy and it is difficult to be constantly happy with everything that goes on in the world. &nbsp;Dopamine release is necessary to balance our brains so we can have that joyful feeling. &nbsp;If we don’t get this naturally many people try to make themselves happier with the overuse of certain substances.&nbsp;</p>
<h2>What is dopamine and how to stimulate dopamine naturally?</h2>
<p><br></p>
<blockquote>In the brain, dopamine functions as a neurotransmitter—a chemical released by neurons (nerve cells) to send signals to other nerve cells. The brain includes several distinct dopamine pathways, one of which plays a major role in the motivational component of reward-motivated behavior.There is evidence that addictive behaviors share neuro-biological features. Addictive behaviors intensely involve brain pathways of reward affecting your motivation and dopamine release. &nbsp;</blockquote>
<p>Dopamine is made from amino acid tyro-sine. &nbsp;Foods high in natural probiotics such as yogurt, kefir, and raw sauerkraut can also increase natural dopamine production.</p>
<h2>What is addictive behavior?&nbsp;</h2>
<p><br></p>
<p>Addictive behaviors is associated with your happiness and to keep that level of happiness people tend to go back for more. &nbsp;When they don’t experience the same level of happiness they tend to use more and more of the same substance until they cannot live without it.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Drug addicts go to extremes to get the substance they need and will not worry about anything else accept the substance. &nbsp;This often leads to depression and anxiety which brings its own problems. &nbsp;</p>
<p>An addict will go to great lengths to get what he or she “needs”. &nbsp;A gambler might get themselves into trouble and the obsession takes over their whole lives which in turn could affect their everyday work lives. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Alcohol and drug abuse can destroy families and makes people lose their families. &nbsp;These addicts loses all sense of obligation and ultimately only care about their addiction and their next fix. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Abuse of such a nature causes physical and psychological harm but the addict do not notice this. &nbsp;They stop caring about their bodies and is only fixated on getting their needs met. They might not even realize that their behavior is causing problems with themselves or others. The road to recovery is not an easy task. &nbsp;</p>
<p>The addict needs to get to a breaking point before seeking help. &nbsp;Feelings of hopelessness and failure makes the road to recovery long and hard and there might be relapses but this is not the end of the path to recovery. &nbsp;There is help out there and with the help of peers, family members and councilors the long road to recovery is possible. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>
<p>When we recover from an addiction it is important to balance out the dopamine and serotonin levels without substance abuse. &nbsp;</p>
<h2>What is serotonin?</h2>
<blockquote>Serotonin is a mono-amine neurotransmitter. It has a popular image as a contributor to feelings of well-being and happiness, though its actual biological function is complex and multifaceted, modulating cognition, reward, learning, memory, and numerous physiological processes. As a neurotransmitter, serotonin helps to relay messages from one area of the brain to another. This includes brain cells related to mood, sexual desire and function, appetite, sleep, memory and learning, temperature regulation, and some social behavior.</blockquote>

<p><a href="">Image source</a></p>
<h2>How can we stimulate serotonin naturally?</h2>
<p><br></p>
<ul>
  <li>Take in a lot of Vitamin B6. &nbsp;Foods like Spinach, garlic, cauliflower, celery, and fish (especially tuna) If you eat this for dinner you will also get a good night's sleep. &nbsp;</li>
  <li>Get enough exercise.&nbsp;</li>
  <li>Try and reduce stress in your life.</li>
  <li>Cut out sugar!</li>
</ul>
<p>Once you balance out these two you will surely feel happier and more relaxed about life. &nbsp;Remember that there are always solutions to problems. &nbsp;Don't lose yourself to substance abuse. &nbsp;There are alternatives. Change your life. &nbsp;It is never too late.&nbsp;</p>

Great topic. When I was 18, I witnessed a bunch of guys getting addicted to heroin. It was said that the heroin was almost pure, 93% to be exact. It was so strong that they'd mix it into a cigarette and get high from it just like that. It was cheap also.

This was an unheard of situation actually, and I was there because I had no other choice concerning being there with them. I had committed myself to being there in an unbreakable contract with the U.S. government. After being coaxed repeatedly, I tried it once in the cigarette, and after a short time, I discovered what the phrase "rubber knees" means. That's how my knees were, like rubber and I couldn't stand up. I then got sicker than I'd ever been, throwing up violently.

That pretty much told me that I wanted nothing to do with something that could affect me that way. And the thing is, *everyone* who ever takes heroin, is going to get sick like I did. So, I've always wondered why these guys went all the way to addiction, when they went through what I did, weren't addicted, but still continued going through the getting sick routine until addiction took over. Eventually they all went to injecting it.

One guy actually kept getting sick every single time he used it, even AFTER he was addicted!

I know for a fact that it is NOT easy to get addicted to heroin, because one has to bear all the pain and agony of getting used to it before they can be addicted.

It's the same with alcohol. I drink alcohol, but I limit how often I drink, because I know if I drink too often, I could become an alcoholic. Since that experience watching heroin junkies in the making, I've always been baffled about why so many humans force themselves to go through the part of *getting* addicted, to actually *become* addicted!

I am so thankful you got out of that! It is exactly the same with smoking. It is so hard to start smoking but so many people do....We live in a very weird world. Not a lot of things make sense these days. Very sad actually.
