Will is the ability to make a conscious choice. Every person has a free will to decide whether they want to do something or not. </p> <p>Animals have some degree of will, but human beings have much more willpower because they can make informed choices. </p> <p>If you complete a task, it is done out of free will, even if it was a task given to you by your employer. It is still your choice whether you want to complete it or not. You are also aware of the consequences if you do not complete the task, so the choice is yours. </p> <p>A stubborn person can be called willful if they do not easily comply with the demands of other people. They often do what they like, breaking rules and laws without thinking about the consequences. A much greater will is needed when there are roadblocks on the path to success. </p> <p>Will is very closely related to desire. If you want to succeed in life and have a strong desire to achieve a goal, then you are far more likely to succeed. Ever heard of the saying: “Where there is a will there is a way.”? </p> <p>Scientifically there is an argument that our unconscious mind is in control of our desires and that our conscious minds are just identifying what the unconscious mind wants. Luckily we still have a choice. </p> <p>We could also live by the ‘go with the flow’ attitude where we believe that everything happens for a reason, but do we really have a free will then?</p> <h2>What is willpower?</h2> <p><br></p> <p>Willpower is the determination to exercise your own will. People with a strong sense of willpower will move mountains to achieve their goals. People who don’t, will more easily give up without ever reaching their goal. </p> <p>To succeed in life, you first need to identify your needs and decide exactly what it is that you want. You set a goal for yourself, and you go for it. This means that it doesn’t matter how many difficulties you may face to achieve your desired goal you will continue until you achieve it. </p> <p>Every single day we are faced with challenges and decisions. We eat what we have to eat to stay healthy. We exercise because it is good for us. We do not give in to temptation but what happens if we constantly resist temptation? </p> <h2>What happens if we constantly resist temptation?</h2> <p><br></p> <p>Constantly resisting temptations can in fact have an influence on your work performance. If you resist a temptation it means that you are not satisfied. If you are not satisfied you are not happy, because you actually want something else, but you decide to make the right choice. </p> <p>A recent study was done where a lecturer brought in freshly baked cookies into the room. He placed the cookies next to a plate of radishes. The smell of the cookies were overpowering. </p> <p>One half of the class was given a cookie, while the other half was given a radish to eat. Directly after the hand out, the lecturer gave the students a complicated puzzle to complete. Most of the students who ate the radish, gave up with the puzzle after only eight minutes while the ones who ate the cookie worked longer and completed the puzzle in nineteen minutes. </p> <p>Make sure you have a balance in your life. There is a time to work and then there is a time to play. Give in to temptations once in a while. You don’t have to indulge every single day but once in a while just take a break and give in to something that makes you happy and satisfied. </p> <h2>How can you improve your will power?</h2> <p><br></p> <p>1. Reward yourself from time to time. Eat that chocolate! Not eating it will only make/ you want it more. Once eaten it is over and done and you can go back to your strict rules. </p> <p>2. Get a good night’s sleep. If you are tired you are more likely to fail. If you are rested well, you can concentrate much better and it will be easier to complete tasks. </p> <p>3. Use your imagination to improve your will power. Imagine yourself reaching your goal, and visualize it every day. This will ensure that you stay determined and focused. </p> <p>4. Practice relaxation techniques and find a hobby. Something that can pull you away from negativity and make you feel relaxed and help to keep your mind at bay.
