As I munch on my homemade water yam porridge, also scrolling through Hive looking for interesting topics to engage on, I came across Hive Ghana's weekly writing prompt, interesting and relatable topics as usual, but the one that caught my attention the most which I would be writing on is the third topic, you see some hours back before coming across that post, I was very famished as described in the topic then I thought of either calling my sister to buy bean cake her way back from school  which I could combine with pap to satisfy my hunger,  or just face the kitchen and satisfy the craving that made me buy the water yam porridge ingredients I had in the kitchen which I bought 3 days ago,  you already know the answer, I went for the second option, paused all the work I had to do, face the heat and finally filled my hungry self that the next thing I could think of was hit the bed, lol

Food is one of life's greatest pleasures, providing sustenance, flavors, cultural connection, and good health to us, have you ever heard the saying, "You are what you eat"? When it comes to dining options, the debate between take out or street food like I would like to put it in this context versus homemade meals is a longstanding one, but for me, I wouldn't choose a side as they both have in so many ways make life convenient for me at some point. Let's explore the unique benefits and drawbacks of each culinary experience.

**The Allure of Street Food**

Street food holds a special place in the hearts (and stomachs) of many food lovers. From delicious akara(bean cake, Jolof rice, boli(roasted painted), etc the sights, smells, and sounds of street vendors create an immersive experience, have you ever traveled out of your country or state and found yourself missing out on some of these street food you are familiar with in your area of residence?

* Street food is often deeply rooted in local traditions and culinary heritage. Trying these dishes allows you to experience the authentic flavors and ingredients that define a region's cuisine, connecting you to the culture in a tangible way.

* in a situation where I am in transit and hunger strikes, you don't expect me to wait till I get home, who knows how much hour it will take, especially when stuck in Lagos traffic, a quick bite is always available even on traffic to save a soul, lol. This convenience is especially appealing for those with busy schedules or for travelers. 

To even the more vital reason, affordability, street food is typically more budget-friendly than some take out or restaurant dining, or homemade dishes, especially with the current inflation in the country, making it accessible to a wider range of people to eat on a budget without breaking the bank.

**The Comforts of Homemade Food**

Homemade meals have their own unique charms as well. Preparing and enjoying food in the comfort of your own home provides a sense of warmth, familiarity, and assurance of what you are putting into your stomach. Because to be frank, even though we enjoy takeouts or street food, we can't be 100% sure of what went into the preparation no matter how tasty it is.

*  When you prepare food at home, you have complete control over the ingredients, ensuring freshness and the ability to cook your meal based on your dietary preferences or restrictions. You can also ensure proper food handling and hygiene practices.

* Homemade meals often carry deep emotional connections, evoking memories of family gatherings, childhood favorites, and cherished recipes passed down through generations. Before I prepared my waterfall porridge today, I had to call my mum to remind me of the ingredients she usually used for us as a child, it's been a long I made talk more about eating this meal, so buying the ingredients from the market kind of sent an exciting feeling through me, because it was my favourite as a child, I wouldn't get this exciting/satisfactory feeling if I ordered takeout, that the joy preparing your own meals brings.



* Preparing meals at home can be more cost-effective than dining out, especially as a family, if I have to order take out for every member of my family as a mom every day, I'll definitely push myself to debts or financial crises, it's easier and more affordable to cook at home, once in a while take out isn't bad though, food wastage is also zero in my home because leftovers are refrigerated and microwaved for another time.


**The Best of Both Worlds**

Ultimately, both street food and homemade meals offer unique benefits and can coexist together in a way that suits your lifestyle. Street food satisfies our cravings for adventure, cultural exploration, and spontaneity, while homemade meals provide comfort, nourishment, and personal connections.

Why not embrace the best of both worlds? Indulge in the flavors and excitement of street food while traveling or exploring new neighborhoods, and savor the joy of homemade meals when seeking familiarity and quality time with loved ones.
