**I was planning on to continue my travel journals chronologically in Germany where I visited Nuremberg two weeks ago. Yet I am in Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, and I arrived on one of the most important public holidays for both Czechs and Slovaks – November 17 is commemorated as the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day. Partly for the events that began the Velvet Revolution, a peaceful revolution that ended the communist rule over Czechoslovakia (which split just three years later into two countries in a similarly peaceful manner). However, that day had been celebrated during the communist era either as the International Students’ Day in remembrance of the students who were slaughtered in 1939 while demonstrating against the Nazi takeover of Czechoslovakia and their schoolmates that were sent to concentration camps in the upcoming days. Nowadays, both Slovakia and the Czech Republic are victims of Russian information war. The Russians tend to emphasize Slavic bonds among our nations (while they drafted mainly non-Slavic population for its destructive war against Slavic Ukraine) and the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy Day has, alas, become a battlefield of its kind...**

> Původně jsem chtěl se svým cestovatelským deníčkem pokračovat do Norimberku, kde jsem byl před dvěma týdny. Ale jsem v Bratislavě a dorazil jsem v jeden z našich nejdůležitějších svátků, v Den boje za svobodu a demokracii. Asi víte, že není spojen jen se Sametovou revolucí, ale také se vzpomínkou na studenty, které v roce 1939 povraždili nacisté, případně které následně deportovali do koncentračních táborů. Dnes jsou Slovensko i Česko oběťmi ruské informační války. Rusové akcentují pouta mezi slovanskými národy (přičemž rekrutují převážně neslovanskou populaci na svou destruktivní válku proti slovanské Ukrajině) a z Dne boje za svobodu a demokracii se bohužel stalo bojiště...

We arrived to Bratislava main train station in the afternoon and noticed several groups of people with flags wandering around the city. Later on, two of them met and stuck for a while shouting at each other. One of them with Russian and Slovak flags, the other one with Slovak, Ukrainian and EU flags. The building on the picture is Russian Centre of Science and Culture with fake blood on its walls. It seems to be shut down. The Russian embassy is just around the corner. When we passed by, there were about twenty people with Russian flags. Some of them spoke Russian, the others were Slovaks, though.

> Na Bratislavské hlavní nádraží jsme přijeli odpoledne a hned jsme si všimli několika skupinek lidí s vlajkami, které se toulaly městem. Později na sebe dvě narazily, na chvilku se zasekly a pořvávaly na sebe. Jedna měla vlajky ruské a slovenské, druhá slovenské, ukrajinské a vlajky EU. Budova na fotce je Ruské centrum vědy a kultury, je politá falešnou krví. Ruská ambasáda je hned za rohem. Když jsme ji míjeli, postávala před ní asi dvacítka lidí s ruskými vlajkami. Někteří mluvili rusky, ale jiní byli určitě Slováci.

I sort of wanted to see a demonstration of the pro-Russian people as there are unfortunately plenty of them both in the Czech Republic and in Slovakia. On the other hand, I didn’t really want to get into anything, especially when I am here with my Spanish girlfriend (and having a relationship with any foreigner except a Russian is highly frowned upon in certain circles if you know what I am talking about) and we usually speak English (which could make me a globalist spy in their eyes – for real, no kidding). So when we heard noise coming from one of the main Bratislava squares, we approached cautiously towards its source. It turned out to be a festival rather then a demonstration but the police horsemen we saw when coming closer were sort of an alert. On the second glance, we saw people with kids taking pictures with the horsemen and I felt relieved.


> Proruskou demonstraci jsem sice chtěl vidět, ale na druhé straně jsem se nechtěl do ničeho zaplést. Jsem tu s T. a na vztah s cizincem se spousta účastníků demonstrace dívá hodně negativně. Snad jen kdyby byla Ruska, dalo by se to tolerovat. Nebo možná Chorvatka, jako choť páně Vrabela, že... Nevím, jak se svou paní mluví on, ale já se s T. bavím většinou anglicky, což ze mně může v některých očích udělat globalistického špiona. Bez nadsázky. Takže když jsme z jednoho z hlavních bratislavských náměstí zaslechli hluk, opatrně jsme se za ním vydali. Jízdní policisté byli na první pohled důrazné varování, ale pak se ukázalo, že se s nimi fotí lidé s malými dětmi, takže se mi ulevilo.

The festival ("For People Who Care" in this particular case) is something more common than pro-Russian and anti-system demonstrations that took place in Prague, Bratislava and several other major cities yesterday. People usually celebrate November 17 in such a cultural manner, lighting candles in places where students demonstrated against the communists back in 1989 and so. The concert was nice and its atmosphere was really warm. People showed their support to Ukraine, the local LGBTQ+ community (a hate crime, [shooting in a gay bar](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2022_Bratislava_shooting) recently happened in Bratislava), free press and investigative journalists (commemorating [Ján Kuciak](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_of_J%C3%A1n_Kuciak), who was murdered when discovering tax frauds of businessmen with connections to top-level Slovak politicians) and so. Putting it this way, Slovakia seems to be a dangerous place, but it is not. Stay tuned for more posts (even though I’ll write about my stay in Germany first).

> Koncert pre všímavých. Vám se asi nemusím rozepisovat o tom, že podobné kulturní akce k oslavám 17. listopadu patří, stejně jako zapalování svíček na Národní třídě i jinde. Lidé dávali najevo podporu Ukrajině, slovenské LBGTQ+ komunitě (o nedávné střelbě v bratislavském gay baru jste asi slyšeli), svobodným médiím a investigativním novinářům (Jána Kuciaka asi taky znáte) a tak.
