How to Use Manure - June 4, 2022 @goldenoakfarm

I got a whole bag full of Old Farmers Almanacs from someone on BuyNothing a couple years ago. They ran from the late 1960’s into the 1980’s. I found this page in the 1985 edition.

Lots of people have chickens now and want to use the manure in the gardens. But chicken manure is VERY high in nitrogen. It’s fine for the late fall when it’s getting colder or early spring when the soil has not warmed up.

The reason is that the biology which makes nitrogen accessible to plants is either slowing down or has not awaken yet. That happens when the soil temperature is 50F.

Adding a small amount of nitrogen at those times will help plants. But too much will weaken them. That’s the problem commercial farmers run into. They buy N-P-K fertilizers, put down “plenty”, and the excess runs off. That’s what’s created the “dead zone” in the Gulf of Mexico at the end of the Mississippi River.

Before it’s run off, the plants have taken up a lot, and it weakens them. So the commercial farmers have to resort to pesticides and fungicides to try to control the pests and diseases that result.

Keeping the soil biology very healthy and the soil balanced eliminates all this. The best way to balance soil is to do a comprehensive soil test, including all micro-nutrients, (land grant colleges’ tests don’t do this) and only put down what your soil needs.

In the case of chicken manure, more is definitely NOT better. You may notice that the use of chicken manure is limited in the above chart to Fall use, and is not listed for use at any other times.

I thought this might help new gardeners avoid having to deal with pest and disease problems later in the year.

Someone was saying that it's safest to add chicken manure to compost with lots of carbon rich material, rather than using it straight up. I have to admit that my plants do super well in the vacated chicken runs after all their manure has been soaked into the straw and mulch and dug around by them for a season.

Yeah that's great advice. I only ever spread it in Autumn and the rest is layered in the compost or put in bags to rot a bit more before I put it round the olives which seem to love it.
