I'm getting tired of ISP's blaming the trans-pacific cable anytime there is an outage / slowdown
There was a time when I suppose I could have believed this but the story of "sharks attacking the trans-Pacific cable" have been going on for a bit too long now and since it is such a difficult / impossible thing for anyone to prove / disprove, I tend to not believe it.

There was a time that I didn't really even believe the cable existed and I have some doubts about whether or not it actually does. It just seems a bit odd to me that a several thousand mile long extension cord goes all the way across the pacific ocean.

[src](https://cdn.arstechnica.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/trans-pacific-cables.jpg)</center>

Let's just go ahead and not go full conspiracy theorist and presume that they do exist and have for quite some time. This would cost an astronomical amount of money and if that truly is the backbone of all communication between the East and West you would think that there would be some sort of backup plan should something go wrong. I am reminded about how when playing SimCity it was a very bad idea to attach all of your electrical grid at one location. Just one of the buildings starts on fire an a whole part of your city is f**ked.

[src](https://www.freegameempire.com/Img/Cache/Games/SimCity-Classic/Screenshot-3.png)
 I suppose you would need to be around my age to get this </center>

There would be several contingency plans is what I am trying to say and I feel that local internet service providers will default to blaming the mysterious undersea cables in order to just get customers off their backs about slow internet.

This has been the case here in my condo in Da Nang for a few days now and it is really frustrating to see Netflix buffering and when it does play I'm watching something in 280p or something like that. While I have not complained directly, a lot of the people in my building work online so they have complained and the owner sent out a group message blaming sharks attacking undersea cables. I guess I just don't buy that but from an ISP ownership standpoint this is a wonderful "out" for them to have anytime something goes wrong.

<center>
![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmTn2DMRpz65bUnGqY1c8tgZ8VM9vghSg4sW2Wr1ma7wJh/image.png)
[src](https://compote.slate.com/images/87b79ce6-bb1c-42ca-ab42-9931a6284fe5.jpg)</center>

There's like one very blurry video of a shark attacking what we are told is the undersea internet cable and they will always reference this when they are making excuses about how all of a sudden the internet is slow city wide.

We did kind of call them out on this not that long ago because there are more than one ISP in this country. The one that is most used blamed the sharks again, but people using one of their competitors didn't have this issue. I have a hard time believing that these various ISP's all use different undersea cables but maybe someone out there knows differently.

To me it just seems like a really convenient "out" anytime that anything is going wrong with what is bound to be a tremendous amount of infrastructure that is involved in getting and keeping everyone online.

Another example in my own life has to do with another "shark attack" and a friend of mine figured he would try to switch over to mobile data because what he was doing absolutely had to be done that day online. When he switched over to mobile data on his phone the drop in speed completely disappeared. How do we explain that? Are we supposed to believe that all mobile data has NOTHING to do with these frequently-attacked-by-ocean-life cables?
<center>
![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmRfYFxthN8cBfaQoCQqHrx8sFWz9iTrq5sxtPH7YXiuTR/image.png)
[src](https://miro.medium.com/max/1120/1*4P05s6qNrDPMvMeza8q-8Q.png)</center>
Of course this could all boil down to my own ignorance about how the internet actually works. I stopped keeping up with that sort of thing back in the late 90's.

The excuse just comes up too frequently for me to really believe it anymore and if the past 5 years have really taught me anything it would be to seriously doubt any official release that attempts to explain a problem.

If you have real information about how all of this works I would love to read about it but all I can find online is normally written by people that have some stake in the game so of course they would print that.

It definitely seems like they would have some kind of backup. With wireless point to point being so much improved these days and satellite internet being a thing, there are countless ways they could get the signal to distribute to you. Especially when that is the whole purpose of your business, you need to have multiple options. Even if they were tapping into something from the west. There has to be lines back that way...

I owned a cafe years ago and one of the things that made it so popular was that I had 2 ISP's, one of which was only used by the staff. If the main one for the customers went down or was shit-slow that day we would divert the customers to another one. This was a 7-table restaurant and I went the extra mile to make sure we had alternatives. How massive ISP's manage to not have a backup plan is pretty alarming.

Sounds like a smart business plan. We used to have a secondary connection for our phone but that became more problematic than just sending the data down our fiber. How the big isp's get away with half the stuff they do is a joke.

More like fishing vessels than sharks to be honest as our cable comes via Europe down the Atlantic and have had outages a few years ago on a regular basis. Has been fine for now and could even have been tampered with by the companies paid to maintain this as that would be a hefty contract to remain relevant.

I don't really know how these stuff work. Funnily, I agree to all of your data presented above 😂 shark attacked, throttled due to lack of bandwidth as one of the 5 cable were snapped.

My country has only 1 backbone, the semi government owned telecommunication company, we call it Telekom Malaysia. Therefore, rest of the ISP has to contract with them to get a small cable and redistribute data to the rest of their respective customers.

Usually, this kind of crap happened exactly like you described. When watching youporn on my desktop due to shark attack, all I gotta do is connect the desktop computer with my mobile phone hotspot, and the shark attack effect disappeared.

Now that I know there's a special load balancer at the main, which they allow the big boys ISP to have priority to make use of the bandwidth.

I'm sure there is some information out there about how the ISP's differ from mobile carriers as far as internet connection is concerned. When I was living in the jungles of Thailand there was no ISP, we only had mobile data.... and although it was relatively expensive this ended up being the fastest and most reliable internet connection I have ever had in my entire life. It was only 2 out of 5 bars too.

I agree with you. This is one big lie I think that ISP providers always have in answering inquiries to their clients. I'm sick and tired of hearing their lies but up until now nobody can exactly give an answer; unless the people who are experts of this matter say a word. I hope we'll find the answer that is accurate somedays. Have a nice day!

The shark story is almost better than the one I hear from Cox when my crazy expensive cable internet goes down at least once a week, at exactly 1am. I know that I am supposed to be in bed.. Well, I think that is their theory? Apparently they are always working on some downed line or something. But it always happens at the exact same time, on the same night. It pissed me off even more when I was running coin miners back in the day!

Maybe they should string some dead fish decoys along the underwater cable as decoys.. lol. I wonder why the hell the sharks are so attracted to it. Maybe it's actually aliens.

While I can get behind the story that the cables are real and that they are going to have problems I just can't believe that every single time it happens that there are sharks attacking. It just seems like a copout answer so that the company involved doesn't have to admit any actual fault.

I would much rather they just admit that they don't know what the problem is but they are working to fix it. It's not like this service is free after all. there is tons of money being made on it so why not just own up to it?

Haha I never put too much thought into the undersea cable as I figured the internet was so redundant, with so many different paths everywhere, that one channel would be insignificant all alone.

Easier to blame a sharknado and collect your money for unacceptable levels of service than it is to detect and solve the real issues.

All isps here are the same though and I am paying for a gigabit connection but never seeing more than a half. Can’t be bothered to wade through the ineptitude of customer service. Wonder how much service they would give us if we paid only half of what is expected!

Oh it's a lot of fun to do a speed-test on your internet connection because I don't think anyone actually gets the speeds they are paying for. I am reminded of these car stereo amplifiers that people were buying in high school. The cheap ones would always advertise the "max output" when the manufacturers knew damn well that this wasn't the level of power that you could get out of it with any consistency, it was just the peak level that you could get out of it for a few seconds before it would start on fire.
