The hardest part about my new diet: Not eating bread
Like any westerner, I grew up on bread.  It is a rather massive part of almost all westerner's existence and was just a staple at every meal that we had.   Breakfast?  Eggs bacon and bread, or cereal with toast, or even better cinnamon sugar toast.   Lunch?  Sandwiches   Dinner:  Something something something with??? you guessed it!  Bread!

bread is awesome and I love it.  Unfortunately, if you are trying to lose weight like I am, there are certain things that simply have to go away and bread is one of them.  

I live in Asia, so in most places bread isn't very much of a thing there right?  WRONG!  Bread is huge in Vietnam as one of the staple snacks that is available almost anywhere for damn near free is a sort of sub sandwich called a bahn mi

It's an extraordinarily cheap sub sandwich and it is available everywhere day or night.   They sell so many of them in a day that the bread used is going to be fresh as well.   Most of them are pretty damn awesome and even though I am eating steaks and potatoes, which cost a LOT more, I still crave bread.  

I find skipping certain things in life to be very easy.  I've never had a sweet tooth and to this day I really don't care for cake at all, if you can believe that.   On my birthday I suggest to others that they not buy me a cake and if they do I let other people eat it and don't even partake at all.  I really don't care for frosting because it is too sweet in my opinion.

But bread, especially garlic bread, is the stuff dreams are made of for me.

That's some food porn right there and if you couple that with a side of marinara I would destroy it and not share with anyone (except Nadi.)   

My meals most days aren't horrible, but they are 100% bread-free.   In the morning I have greek yogurt with fruit, and then a few hours later I will have a 4 egg omelette with cheese.   At lunch I will order a salad from this awesome salad place we have in town and then at night I have potato of some sort with sour cream.  When I am hungry I always eat.   I do not starve myself.

There are a lot of reasons to not eat bread but one of the main ones is that it doesn't fill you up and there really isn't any lasting fullness provided by it and it is also almost completely devoid of any sort of nutrition.   Whole wheat has some benefit, but for the most part if you are trying to lose weight skipping the bread entirely is your best bet.   I have lost quite a bit already, close to 20 lbs or 9kg in 6 weeks, but man oh man do I miss me some bread.  

I get one cheat day a week and normally that involves some sort of bread goodness.  I start to plan what sort of bread I am going to partake in by around Tuesday.   

On that note I have a date with some eggs, cheese and chopped onion coming up.   I suppose this could be seen as me torturing myself but honestly, I go to the weight that I am unhappy with by always eating bread as well as many other very unhealthy things, whenever I felt like it and that has to change if I am going to be happy with that dude that I see in the mirror.   

So bread... just know that I miss you terribly but I know we are just not good for one another.

I'm eating my greek yogurt as I am reading this post!  Bread is definitely a weakness for my wife and I as well. We used to eat a ton of it along with pasta several times a week too.  For the past couple of years we don't really buy it anymore though.  We stopped getting garlic bread and we only buy a loaf of sourdough that we found at Aldi that is much better for you than most other breads.  We also started buying special pasta that is higher in fiber and ultimately better for you.  It's also pretty rare that we get pizza anymore.  We make our own crust at home with flour and greek  yogurt.  It's not nearly as good, but it fills the void.  I totally feel your pain!

well I suppose the big problem for all of us that gained weight was that these things were always meant to be consumed in moderation and I would imagine that there are a lot of people that didn't bother to moderate  :)

I also love my bread and could never give it up and will sacrifice somewhere else. Those Vietnamese rolls look rather good so I can only imagine this is quite hard to ignore. I had a zero pizza base last week and it had such a great crust, but also not fooled by saying it is a healthy option.

healthy pizza you say?   haha, I don't know why pizza has so many calories in it and everyone says it is terrible for you...  I suspect it is the bread and because it has so much cheese on it.  I'm not nutrition expert.   I have an app for this now because I don't think there is any sort of label enforcement over here and restaurants dont tell you what is in what they are cooking unless you know the owner.

I'm on diet too, but not cutting bread out of my diet completely. I chose whole grain bread and a small and slim slice every day, which I know how much in terms of calories is. I too am still craving fresh bread, baguette and other products but that has to wait.

It took me quite a few years to get completely off bread, of course Asia made that easier!

Could it be the case that flour is OK for me in other countries? Its possible, my reaction to almost all types of bread and flour could well be connected with pesticides...

And then these days I'm close to doing a carnivore diet, really. Changing around the diet for many years has definitely helped, and if I have to, or really want to, I can eat whatever for a day or two.

So I might try Vietnamese bread & more the next time I visit there!

I tried a sandwich like that at a Vietnamese place here in the States. I thought it was great but I was surprised that my dad hated it haha. 

The thing I don't understand is why we pair bread even with pasta. 
???
The pasta already has a **ton** of carbs! Why add more??

yep.  Italian nights out are just carb city.  I went to an Easter pot luck dinner of sorts here in the expat community recently and there was a pasta-bake (carbs), some cut up bread (carbs), pasta salad (carbs), and potato salad.   The potato salad, which is loaded with mayo and therefore fat and high levels of calories, was the wisest choice of all the options.  Essentially there were not good choices to be made and I think that this is just the norm these days.

Are you into reducing your carbs intake? Well, I guess there are options to choose if you are avoiding carbs, maybe you can consider keto bread as substitute. They are available in the supermarkets. You can eat it during cheat days☺️

yes.  I am reducing it dramatically but still getting about 80% of the calories that it is recommended that you get in a day.   This isn't very easy because getting high levels of protein is both expensive and difficult to source.
