This last visa run was a real nightmare... but I had Taco Bell!
This is a part of the lives of people that live in Vietnam long-term but are not employed here. We have to fly out of the country every 90 days and that is just the way it is. It doesn't make much sense to me since I only know a handful of people that were ever denied a visa so I don't understand why they make us do this. If they wanted to just charge all of us the cost of the flights and just let us not have to leave I think everyone would do that.

I absolutely hate travel by air and think that in my lifetime airports went from being an enjoyable experience to being one of the worst things you can possibly ever have to do. Everything is inconvenient and if you get to an airport on the wrong day - such as the end of Lunar New Year, you are in for a lot of waiting and standing just so that you can get into your very uncomfortable seat that you barely fit into and repeat the process on the other side.

I had kind of prepared myself for massive crowds at the Suvanabhumi airport in Bangkok because it is one of the largest hubs in all of SE Asia, but even though I have been through that airport dozens of times I have never ever seen it be as crazy busy as it was on this past trip.

</center>

The ticketing counter is actually around the corner from where I am standing. There were so many people lined up to get their tickets that they ran out of "cattle lines" where everyone has to walk back and forth waiting to get to the front. I was kind of upset that Thai Vietjet had to have been aware that there was going to be a huge amount of people flying since they presumably booked all the flights days or weeks before this day, yet only around half of the counters had any staff at it. I guess this is what you get with budget airlines and I noted that and will pay extra next time to fly with a "real" airline rather than have to deal with this crap.

<center>
![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPQnoSDiX3zQ7nQt6NJCw95Yd1UFeX8Zcwh4zWi75w4af/image.png)
</center>

Of course everyone else is displeased with this and everyone was on edge. There were some near violent situations that occurred when some people were trying to cut in line. I had to shout at people several times that "the line starts back there" (pointing far into the distance) and one time had to physically block some people from getting in front of me. I get it ok, you don't want to wait any more than I do but that's the way it is!

You can't take pictures in the immigration and security checkpoints but once again, they were understaffed and honestly, they should know that during Lunar New Year that basically everyone in Asia is traveling and prepare accordingly. I worked in the service industry when I was in college and worked for the US Federal government after I graduated. Holidays do not exist for us in those industries: We are expected to work even MORE when everyone else gets the days off. Again, that is the way that it is.... but apparently not in Thailand.

Once on the other side finally, which took 2.5 hours of standing, waiting, moving a few feet, then standing and waiting again, I trekked to the only thing I like about the BKK airport and that is the fact they have one of my old-school vices, Taco Bell.

<center>
![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmPD65LSBysyrhzYM1Jy6sQnnNitCk9kQejSCnkx8BnYVJ/image.png)
</center>

I'm guessing that Taco Bell isn't nearly as possible as the chain would hope because this was one of the only restaurants in the entire airport that wasn't just overflowing with customers. While they do have weird things on the menu to cater to the Asian taste, thankfully they had crispy taco supreme as one of their main options.

<center>
![image.png](https://cdn.steemitimages.com/DQmdAXuLvfweXPtuUvtyb3pBK1KSmpXVmD36ZVah98He7gV/image.png)
</center>

I was a bit frustrated that they don't offer any a la carte stuff here and you are forced to order a combo with an absurd amount of food. In order for me to get just a couple of tacos, I had to order 3 tacos, a side of chips, and some disgusting things that are made of chicken but look like french fries. I didn't eat anything other than the tacos and the total cost was what you would expect in an airport at 526 Baht. This is roughly $15 and is worlds away from what I remember when I was in college. Of course I was in college a long time ago but we could walk into a Taco Bell back then with $5 in our pockets and get a mountain of food and expect change in return.

I was talking to an American friend who lives in Florida and he informed me that the prices back in the states have skyrocketed as well and because of this a lot of people don't go to Taco Bell anymore. For me the price was always one of the main reasons why I ever went there and with this eliminated, I don't suppose there is any reason to continue to patronize the place.

We all know the jokes about Taco Bell giving people gas or a bad stomach, so what a wonderful thing to fill your guts up with right before you get onto a crowded airplane. Thankfully I am not affected by such things so I didn't contribute to the air pollution on the plane.

So this visa run was by far the worst one I have been on yet in the 4 years that I have lived in Vietnam. The next one I think I will turn into a mini vacation for a few days instead of just turning around right away and heading back to Vietnam. I do find it amusing when the Thai immigration official asked me how long I was going to be in Thailand and I responded "about 4 hours."

Man, that sucks. I am sorry to hear that. Good thing you speak Thai otherwise it could have been even worse when those people tried to cut in front of you! Taco Bell is probably my wife's favorite fast food restaurant. Although we don't eat out a ton, when we do, that is usually one of the places we stop. I'm so old I remember when everything on the menu was $.59, $.79, and $.99. Those were the days!

Those people weren't Thai. A vast majority of the people in the airport were Chinese as that nationality constitutes a very large portion of overall Thai tourism. I heard very little Thai being spoken in the airport and if I had to guess I would say that 80% of the people around me at all times were from China.
> old I remember when everything on the menu was $.59, $.79, and $.99

Funny how you said this because I was just regaling @darth-azrael with this information in the response I did before this one!

Ah, okay, that sucks then. Are Chinese people generally that rude or is it just a cultural thing? Man, those really were the days. They only had like 15 items to choose from, but you couldn't beat the prices. I miss the original Nachos Bell Grande. They just aren't the same these days.

I hate queues and you obviously do too so paying extra next time is a must to avoid this situation. Cheap is good but when faced with this it is clearly not worth the savings. Safe flight and feel sorry for you guys being put through this.

I think the upgrade was only $20 or so, so the next time I will definitely opt for this add on. With my luck that will be the one time there is no queue at any of the airports :)

Taco bell prices have skyrocketed over recent years but I guess that's true at most fast food places. Relatively speaking, I think it is still a little cheaper than most other places. A regular taco now costs $1.79 and a taco supreme will set you bakc $2.69. You can save a bit if you order in bulk. A dozen tacos will set you back $20.99 while a dozen taco supremes is "only" $23.99. Oddly, you save $0.69 per taco supreme but only $0.05 per regular taco that way.

By comparison, your average combo at McDonald's will set you back almost $10 these days.

I don't know if I could handle flying once every three months. I have to travel for work occasionally and I hate it. I just find the whole process extremely stressful. The last time I travelled by air for personal reasons was about four years ago.

flying just plane (intentional) sucks but I guess you could say I am used to it by now. Before I left the states I had a job that was 90% travel. I have grown accustomed to waiting and standing and have a system for getting through security including never wearing a belt or any jewelry that I am going to have to remove. I travel light, especially on these visa runs where I am not actually going to stay anywhere too. Just a backpack that contains nothing other than my laptop and maybe a book.

When I was in college Taco Bell had the 69/79/99 special on a ton of items including. Before I moved away they were forced to raise these prices 10 cents or something like that.

Now that you tell me taco supremes cost $2.69 I guess my airport combo wasn't that bad of a deal afterall. We are a long way from the source of all those special spices!

A Taco Bell was one of the places close to where I worked the summer after my senior year in high school. I can't remember exactly what the prices were, but I know you could get four regular tacos and a drink for less than $5 after tax. Pretty sure a quarter pounder with cheese value meal from McDonald's was like $3.99.

It's getting to the point where fast food places just aren't worth it. You can go to your average chain restaurant and get a much better meal for a couple of bucks more.

To be fair, that's not just taco bell. Fast food in general has increased in price so much you might as well just go to an actual restaurant or cook at home yourself and save some bills. Either way, Taco Bell fucks hard.

Seeing them have chicken fries like Burger King is fucking weird though.

They do strange things in Asia in fast food restaurants that we also have in USA. The menus are frequently almost unrecognizable with almost every place having a rice option including McDonalds.

I haven't been to the US in I think around 7 or 8 years and when I did go I spent most of my time in large cities where everything is super expensive anyway.

Oh definitely plan a vacation! I bet life seems like a vacation at first when you expat and live somewhere far away from your country of origin. You do settle into a routine that needs to be broken occasionally and a vacation will be good for that. I imagine the places you can go for inexpensive flights because of your location and the inexpensive accommodations that are within a couple hours flight. Plus the pain in the ass you will avoid for the visa thing.

@gooddream ·
Well the last vacation I went on was actually more of a pain in the ass than it was fun. I guess I did unwind a bit but one of the main takeaways from that vacation was that it recharged my batteries for my appreciation about living where I do. I am limited on how long I can be away because of my dog and that I live alone as well.
