Building your own computers, Is it worth it?

<p><img src="http://i.imgur.com/jv0DPVj.jpg"/>Hello, in this thread I will be talking about is it worth it to build your own computer?. Me myself have been building computers for over 6 years now and have enjoyed every bit of it, But the question is, is it worth it for most people? in this thread we will look over the pros and cons for building your own computer.</p>
<p>So what are the pros you say?</p>
<p>The pros to computer building is you have many options, you can say to yourself i want a computer that can do this and that, and go out into the market and build a computer specifically for your own needs at the cheapest possible costs, awesome right?, also it is an awesome skill to have and learn, another awesome part of computer building, is after a couple of years if your computer is slowing down you can upgrade it's parts instead of getting an entire new computer! and most of the time it is cheaper to build your own computer instead of going down to your local shop or going online and buying a pre-built computer. There are many other pros to computer building but i tried to sum it up as simply as i could, so lets go look at some cons of computer building, it's not always great.</p>
<p>So what are the cons you say?</p>
<p>Cons to computer building is that you have the build it yourself, and you have to find all the parts you need witch can be a struggle for beginner builders, there is almost a limitless option of parts to choose from and this can be confusing for beginner builders, The biggest problem i had when i started was what parts do i need and how much would it cost? another thing over the years that i hated so much is id purchase the top of the line part, and a month later they would release a new version of it, and that sucks a lot.</p>
<p>Other things to note, Well if you are saying to yourself "Why don't i just go buy a console to play games on" The PC market is massive, and so is the online platform for computer gaming, with computer gaming you have many free games to play, and just a bigger library of games to choose from, but there are limitations to playing specific games on PC is some games you have to have a very fast expensive computer to play, computer gaming is for the more dedicated type of person.</p>
<p>So where do you even get started in computer building?&nbsp;</p>
<p>That is a great question! the best way to get into computer building is either going and watching some beginner videos online or going to a tech forum and asking for help there, or just go online and do some raw research! or you can just ask me if you have any questions feel free to hit me up and i will try my best at helping you!.</p>

Well, from my perspective, although im an IT guy, i would prefer to avoid 'building' it , since i havent had a desktop for almost 10 years until recently :D. It makes sense to build it if the price difference is around 15%-20%  less than taking it as a whole.

However, my biggest issue with building it is the warranty. If you are building it, it means ordering pieces from multiple shops, most likely ordering from eshops or shops that arent exactly in your neighborhood. In case of an issue, how much you value your time to go and return, communicate/find a solution? I would expect that in this case, for every person this has different value, depending on location and personality.

I wont say what is better, since as i mentioned depends on what needs and priorities each person has, but i will say what i did in my case and i think will follow up in future. I try to buy tower and motherboard together, from the same shop. If i can find a good PSU there,even better! Rest of the components i can 'afford' to look for them somewhere else.  But thats only my style though.

Most warrantys are covered by the manufacturer, Over the years i have never had stuff die out on me that i purchased, But i built a PC for a friend and the graphics card died after 2 months, contacted the manufacturer, a replacement was here within 2 days, Most major computer part brands cover defect warrantys, but if you break something on accident you are screwed, so just don't be stupid! good point tho, pc building is not for everyone!

While building a PC is very cost effective, I agree that it does not make sense in a corporate setting.  That's why you have companies like Dell for where if there is a problem, you get a replacement the next day.

For me personally, I would only build a pc for myself while everyone else get Dells.  If I come across a problem on my PC, I can easily fix it for myself.  I can't imagine working at a shop with all custom PCs.  It would be a nightmare.

I always build the PC myself. I like to be able to choose exactly what I want in.  Also being able to customise later is massively useful.  Always did it this way and not going to change it anyone soon.

Great post! I have been building my own computers since I was 14, and it still baffles me how much cheaper it is comparable setups in the stores. Also being able to build a good base and swap / add parts is the real win for me.

Building computers is a very easy process and it's hard to break components, there are many videos online to guide you, you can do IT!! when i build my new system here in about a month or to maybe i will do a guide on how to build a computer!

Specs of my pc are: x2 Radeon rx 460's (4gb versions) 24Gb of DDR3 ram 1333mhz, AMD fx 6300 6 cores overclocked to 4.7Ghz, But in the next month or 2 i will be scraping this system and building a Ryzen system.

Nothing beats the thrill of hitting the power button for the first time and not seeing anything explode! I love building my own PCs and upgrading parts. One of my favorite hobbies. Def recommend it if anyone is remotely interested in trying it. It's not as difficult as it looks, I promise!

What I would like to see is if anyone is building "retro" computers. DOS machines for instance to play DOS games like they were meant to be played. DOSBox is fine and dandy but nothing can replace a true retro computer experience.
