Before starting the review of this series, which I liked very much, I must clarify that I thought a lot before doing it because it is a subject that obviously involves religion because of its biblical content, and this is usually a very controversial topic depending on the beliefs of each person, all respectable opinions by the way, as long as religious fanaticism does not prevail; however, this publication is not to discern beliefs, it is exclusively to express my opinion about an audiovisual work entitled **Mary Magdalene**.

>Antes de iniciar la reseña de esta serie, que de pasó está decir me gustó mucho, debo aclarar que lo pensé bastante antes de hacerla porque se trata de un tema que evidentemente involucra la religión por ser de contenido bíblico, y éste suele ser un tema muy controvertido dependiendo las creencias de cada quien, opiniones todas respetables por cierto, siempre y cuando no prevalezca el fanatismo religioso; sin embargo, esta publicación no es para discernir creencias, es exclusivamente para expresar mi opinión en torno a un obra audiovisual titulada **María Magdalena**.

Having clarified the previous point, I continue... **María Magdalena** is a series that I just watched on Netflix, it is a Mexican production, although there are times when I doubt whether it is indeed Mexican or Colombian because the cast is made up of leading figures of the dramatic art of both nations. For those of us who grew up watching drama series on the RCN and Caracol networks, or TV Azteca and Televisa, the faces of the cast will be very familiar to us, many of them have also starred in Latin series that has become a trend on the mainstreaming networks: La Piloto, Rosario Tijeras, El Cartel, Narcos, El Patrón del Mal, among many others, I refer punctually to María Fernanda Yepes, Manolo Cardona, and Andrés Parra, as main actors of this production, who are followed by names with a lot of trajectory in the artistic medium of film and television.

>Aclarado lo anterior, continúo… **María Magdalena** es una serie que acabo de ver en Netflix, es una producción mexicana, aunque hay momentos que pongo en duda si efectivamente es mexicana o colombiana, pues el reparto está conformado por primeras figuras del arte dramático de ambas naciones. Para quienes crecimos viendo novelas de las cadenas RCN y Caracol, o de TV Azteca y Televisa, nos resultarán muy familiares los rostros del elenco, muchos de ellos además han sido protagonistas de series latinas que se han convertido en tendencia en las principales cadenas de streaming: La Piloto, Rosario Tijeras, El Cartel, Narcos, El Patrón del Mal, entre muchas otras, me refiero puntualmente a María Fernanda Yepes, Manolo Cardona, y Andrés Parra, como actores principales de esta obra, a los que le siguen nombres de mucha trayectoria en el medio artístico del cine y la televisión.

In general terms, the series goes back to the time when Jesus began his evangelizing process from his departure from Nazareth until he finally died crucified in Jerusalem. Quite close to the sacred scriptures, the series recreates the experiences of Jesus in this journey, from the point of view of Mary Magdalene. 

>A grandes rasgos, la serie se remonta a la época en que Jesús inició su proceso evangelizador, desde su salida de Nazaret hasta que finalmente murió crucificado en Jerusalén. Bastante cercana a las sagradas escrituras, la serie recrea las vivencias de Jesús en este viaje, desde el punto de vista de María Magdalena.

I am not a faithful reader of the Bible, much less a scholar of it, but I understand that, apart from pointing her out as the woman who accompanied Jesus until his last breath, after being saved and healed by him, not much is said about her. However, the series lets us see a woman passionate about her ideals, who according to the traditions of the time, in which women were a being lacking in rights and opportunities whose destiny was at the mercy of what was agreed upon by the men of the family, was able to reveal herself and challenge the designs of society.

>Yo no soy una fiel lectora de la biblia, muchos menos una estudiosa de la misma, pero entiendo que, aparte de señalarla como la mujer que acompañó a Jesús hasta su último suspiro, después de haber sido salvada y curada por él, no es mucho lo que se diga de ella. Sin embargo, la serie deja ver a una mujer apasionada por sus ideales, que de acuerdo a las tradiciones de la época, en las que la mujer eres un ser carente de derechos y oportunidades cuyo destino quedaba a merced de lo convenido por los hombres de la familia, fue capaz de revelarse y desafiar los designios de la sociedad.

I do not know if the writers devised the story of the character from fiction, or if on the contrary they were based on research or secret documents, I mention this because there are religious sects of high power that claim to have in their domain unpublished gospels that contravene the already established precepts, and that would attest that Mary Magdalene could have been one more apostle of the Messiah given the close relationship with him. 

>Desconozco si los escritores idearon la historia del personaje desde la ficción, o si por el contrario se basaron en investigaciones o en documentos secretos, esto lo menciono porque existen sectas religiosas de alto poder que aseguran tener en su dominio evangelios no publicados que contravienen los preceptos ya establecidos, y que darían fe de que María Magdalena pudo haber sido una apóstol más del Mesías dada la relación tan cercana con él.

Now, far from arousing conspiracy theories, I must point out that the story shown in the series at no time offends the sacred scriptures as we know them, it simply tells the life of a Jewish woman who contracts an arranged marriage with a man who makes her supremely unhappy, manages to escape and meets a Roman general who awakens in her for the first time the feeling of love despite having absolutely opposite beliefs. 

>Ahora bien, lejos de despertar teorías conspirativas, debo señalar que la historia mostrada en la serie en ningún momento ofende las sagradas escrituras tal y como las conocemos, sencillamente cuenta la vida de una mujer judía que contrae nupcias convenidas con un hombre que la hace supremamente infeliz, logra escapar y conoce a un general romano que le despierta por primera vez el sentimiento del amor a pesar de tener creencias absolutamente opuestas.

At that time a relationship between a Jewess and a Roman was unthinkable, especially if he was an enemy of the rebels and she was considered just another rebel. So after several episodes of misfortune and suffering, Magdalene ends up sick, tormented and refusing to believe, until she meets Jesus, for whom a new kind of love is born, which she initially confuses in her condition as a woman, but with time she understands that it is a sublime love that transcends the flesh.

>En aquella época era impensable una relación entre una judía y un romano, menos si él era un caza rebelde y ella era considerada una rebelde más. Así que tras varios episodios de desdicha y sufrimiento, Magdalena termina enferma, atormentada y negada a creer, hasta que conoce a Jesús, por quien nace un nuevo tipo de amor que inicialmente ella confunde en su condición de mujer, pero que con el tiempo entiende que se trata de un amor sublime que trasciende la carne.

The apostle of the apostles, this is how the Catholic Church recently recognized Mary Magdalene, vindicating the image of a woman who apparently was very important in the life of Jesus, his most faithful disciple and follower, not in vain it was to her that the resurrected Jesus appeared for the first time.

>La apóstol de los apóstoles, así reconoció recientemente la iglesia católica a María Magdalena, reivindicando la imagen de una mujer que aparentemente fue muy importante en la vida de Jesús, su más fiel discípula y seguidora, no en vano fue a ella a quien Jesús resucitado se le apareció por primera vez.

Beyond the story, which I sincerely find fascinating the works that evoke historical facts, it is remarkable the tour that the series gives us through imposing landscapes, scenery, staging, costumes, sincerely are details so well worked that transport us to that time when Jesus preached announcing the kingdom of God being a witness and victim of society, in which as now, barbarism, injustice, and corruption prevailed. 

>Más allá de la historia, que sinceramente me resultan fascinante las obras que evocan hechos históricos, es destacable el recorrido que la serie nos da por imponentes paisajes, la escenografía, la puesta en escena, el vestuario, sinceramente son detalles tan bien trabajos que nos transportan a esa época en la que Jesús predicaba anunciando el reino de Dios siendo testigo y victima de una sociedad, en la que como ahora, imperaba la barbarie, la injusticia y la corrupción.

There are 60 chapters in total, which at first may seem very long, and that is because it was initially produced as a telenovela, but later the copyrights were sold to Netflix. In any case, it is a very well made production, very well narrated, which I particularly enjoyed quite a lot; however, I understand that being a biblical theme may generate stupor in some, so I recommend the viewer to shed all kinds of fanaticism and enjoy it for what it is, an audiovisual work for entertainment.

>Son 60 capítulos en total, que en principio pueden parecer muy largos, y eso es porque inicialmente fue producida como una telenovela, pero posteriormente los derechos le fueron vendidos a Netflix. En cualquier caso, es una producción muy bien hecha, muy bien narrada, que en lo particular disfruté bastante; sin embargo, entiendo que al ser un tema bíblico puede generar estupor en algunos, por lo que recomiendo al espectador despojarse de todo tipo de fanatismos y disfrutarla como lo que es, una obra audiovisual para el entretenimiento.

While I was looking for images to illustrate this post, I came across a movie also titled Mary Magdalene, starring Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix, which coincidentally was also released in 2018, which was the same year in which the first chapter of the series was released, and obviously, I already want to see it because I did not even know of its existence, and the fact that Joaquin Phoenix is there is reason enough for me to dedicate two hours of my time to it. I'll comment later.

>Mientras buscaba imágenes para ilustrar esta publicación, me topé con una película titulada también María Magdalena, protagonizada por Rooney Mara y Joaquin Phoenix, que casualmente también fue estrenada en el año 2018, que fue el mismo año en el que se estrenó el primer capítulo de la serie, y obvio, ya la quiero ver porque ni siquiera sabía de su existencia, y el hecho de que esté Joaquin Phoenix para mi es motivo suficiente para dedicarle dos horas de mi tiempo. Ya luego les comentaré.

Well, to finish and going back to the series, I was fascinated with the performance of the handsome Manolo Cardona, I have been a fan of his for a long time, I think his interpretation of Jesus is beautiful, Maria Yepes also does her thing of course, but the character I loved the most was the one played by the Colombian actor Cesar Mora as King Herod, simply fascinating.

>Bueno, ya para finalizar y retomando lo concerniente a la serie, quedé fascinada con la actuación del guapísimo Manolo Cardona, soy su admiradora desde hace mucho, me parece que su interpretación de Jesús es hermosa, María Yepes también hace lo suyo por supuesto, pero el personaje que más amé fue el interpretado por el actor colombiano César Mora como el Rey Herodes, sencillamente fascinante.
