**General View of the Great Temple**

**[EN]** Hi #hivers, I'd like to tell you about my recent visit to the great temple of Tenochtitlán. I have always felt that ancient things have a kind of strange energy. As if they could somehow transmit to us part of the experiences and situations they have witnessed. As if the people who used them, made or inhabited them were trying to tell us something through time. As if part of their essence was trying to reach us. That feeling generates in me a kind of reverent respect and the older the object or place the greater the sensation. One of the moments in my life in which I have felt this sensation more strongly was during the visit to the main temple of Tenochtitlan. The notion that this construction housed the center of government of an entire civilization now lost, that these walls witnessed celebrations, rituals, wars, coronations. That it was the home of kings, priests and warriors conveys a unique sensation. If, like me, you feel that way in front of ancient objects, this is a visit not to be missed if you are ever in Mexico City.

https://images.hive.blog/500x500/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gornat/245cYhuMQMgWxPUDm6Q7HixYkut3f1AMknGsgikSxFuRx4MnuaRSN8EMCPyYfw2kPfPpx.jpg

**View of the temple from the museum, at the back the Metropolitan Cathedral**

**A Lost Wonder**

Tenochtitlán was the main city of the Mexica civilization, an architectural marvel if we consider that it was a city that was built in a swampy area of Lake Texcoco and that in the 15th century it housed around 200,000 people, an impressive number for the cities of the time, even those built on dry land. The political and religious center of this city was the Templo Mayor or "Huey Teocalli", its name in Nahuatl, the language of the Mexicas. In this building lived the "Huey Tlatoani" or great emperor of the Mexicas. It was also where the great religious rites of the empire took place. It had a pyramidal shape with a square base and at its peak it reached 45 meters in height. On its truncated summit there were two small temples dedicated to Huitzilopochtli, Mexica god of war and main deity of the pantheon of this empire, and to Tlaloc, god of rain and lightning, another of its most important deities. It was undoubtedly a colossal structure, although today we can only see its base, it is possible to imagine its dimensions.

https://images.hive.blog/650x650/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gornat/2432BkBHhehBu1m6QcNeh4iwtsr9C2X4CHJBuNyo66Jp4XjqjRGk6BbAcFhphNCxDwERe.jpg

**Detail of one of the stone snakes that ornate the temple**

However, this great pre-Hispanic work was lost and for a long time it was not even known of its existence. It turns out that, after the conquest of Tenochtitlán, the destruction of the great temple was ordered and its rocks were reused in the construction of the Metropolitan Cathedral of Mexico City, later a building was built on its foundations and its existence was lost in history until the 70s of the twentieth century when it was rediscovered by accident and archaeological work began. In 1987 the Great Temple Museum was opened and remains open to this day.

**More than what can be seen**

In the archaeological zone today you can also observe the remains of the house of the Eagles, an altar decorated with stone skulls and a temple dedicated to the god of love. It also draws attention an area where you can see a brick work as a drainage channel clearly a much later work. But there is much more than what can be seen in the open sky. At the back of the temple there is a reinforced concrete construction that is part of the museum and houses real treasures found in the excavations.

**Brick channel later used as a drainage channel**

Although there is much to enjoy in the museum there are three things that really impressed me. The first is the statue of Mictlantecuhtli. This statue was found in the excavations of the temple and represents the Mexica god of the underworld. It is about the size of a person and, if that wasn't impressive enough on its own, in the museum you can read that he was depicted with curly hair. This is a detail that I find extremely impressive, in an area where people were predominantly straight haired.

https://images.hive.blog/650x650/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gornat/23xAVTgtjt2W47t4ctpop75XW6yZVjTESSTcJteJTSzG5PG9RZqQ8GYiuPEaNeewSH7pc.jpg

**Life-size statue of Mictlantecuhtli**

Secondly, I was very impressed by the ceramic samples, the quality of the workmanship and the fine finish show the artistic mastery of this culture.

https://images.hive.blog/650x650/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gornat/23xKhx2HFxGSNggFhBfvXCZq9Nheqha2NN1nEPL4oECbT7nNzZwMRyBLThLZoqBXg5C6u.jpg

**Sample of prehispanic ceramics**

And finally, I was very impressed by the date points carved in obsidian, are a work of great detail to impress by its shape and edge, definitely would not want to be on the sharp side of any of those, no matter the thickness of the armor.

https://images.hive.blog/650x650/https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/gornat/23w2ipR5oSTo4VkhSRooxZRmEQ7LPcPAiHFhNf1tDz2cjzdRGaopCzGqN4CLUBpMqwfvg.jpg

**Arrowheads and spearheads carved in obsidian and other rocks**

But don't be influenced by my criteria, in the complex there is a lot to see and enjoy, burials, pieces of jewelry and a lot of information.

That's all for today #hivers, I hope you enjoyed it, and if you have the opportunity don't miss to visit this impressive museum.

Hello @fredaig, yes as @alicia2022 said it's almost a magical sensation. Been in those places you can feel almost as if you could be there 500 years ago and interact with those people. Hope you have the chance to visit this place someday.

Yes of course, i love going to ancient places, here in Nigeria we dont have such ancient milestone kept for decades maybe we do but haven't explore them yet, i guess over they is filled ancestry memories. I never knew Mexico has its own history, was thinking it was just the indians and whites.
