What do you think of when you hear the word mobile standards. You probably might not think much of it especially if you are not accustomed to the meaning of the phrase. The meaning of the phrase actually turns out be quite interesting enough to be a topic of discussion. You might not know as did I until a few moments ago that mobile standards are actually rules that define the generally acceptable speed and levels of reliability for every mobile phone. Quite simply, mobile standards define just how fast, reliable and secure every phone should be. We can also say that phones that fall below the current mobile standards are below the generally acceptable industry standard. Another notable thing about mobile standards is how they evolve over time making more rooms for new standards to be set in order to accommodate advancements in technology. Recently I stumbled on an article about how 6G devices will run. Although 6G technology has not actually been developed yet as the latest is still 5G, the author just talked about how 6G technology is perceived to take shape based on the current limitations of 5G. This article got me interested in what exactly 5G means as I have been hearing about all these technologies for an awful long time but didn't really know what they really meant. So I did a quick search on Google and I got to find out about generations of mobile standards. Here's what I found. Every time the mobile standards are updated to accommodate the new and sometimes replace the outdated standards, that process can be described as the birthing of a new generation. Because mobile standards are divided into generations, mobile phones are also divided into generations depending on the acceptable mobile standards at the time they were built. Mobiles are named after the generation of mobile standards they represent, which why we have 1G, 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G phones. You guessed right, the G behind each number stands for generation, 1G phones are first generation phones and the same rule applies to every other generation mentioned. ### Generations of mobiles and their standards #### 1G 1G phones only had the capability to do one thing, make phone calls, actually the word 1G was never really recognized until 2G phones were deployed. They were introduced in the 70's by Telecom later known as Telstra with the set standards being maintained throughout the 80's. 1G phones maintain a maximum speed of 2.4kbps. #### 2G 2G effected the introduction of of SMS and MMS in mobile phones. Unlike 1G phones that used analog radio signals, 2G phones came with an upgrade that allowed mobiles to utilize digital radio signals implemented through concepts like GSM and CDMA. The upgrades in 2G phones were wide at that time because they allowed mobiles to do more than just make calls while also enhancing the call making capabilities of mobile phones. Notable upgrades include the introductions of conference calls, internal roaming among others. 2G phones maintain a speed of 50kbps to 1mbps. #### 3G 3G introduced the first generation of wireless technology that has set the basis for all mobile phone technologies as they are known today. 3G phones were fashioned with lots of impressive updates like web browsing, improved file sharing, increment in information transfer speed to about 200kbps. 3G also saw the advent of video calls and general TV technology and many more. The 3G was introduced in 2001 and uses the Universal Mobile Telecommunications System otherwise known as UMTS as its core network architecture. #### 4G 4G phones processes at a speed of about 100mbps and can be all way up to 1gbps. 4G has the potentials to surpass the current speed of the broadband home internet connection. 4G also has a variation 4G LTE which is reputed to be faster than 4G. 4G standards aim to provide high speed, high quality, better security and capacity for mobiles. Important upgrades in 4G include HDTV, 3DTV, video conferencing and cloud computing. 4G implements MIMO and OFDM technologies. 4G LTE with `LTE` standing for Long Term Evolution is faster than 4G and was released to further strengthen the speed standards for mobile phones. #### 5G 5G is not yet available commercially though it is currently being tested in some zones, so not much is really known about 5G. 5G phones are expected to run at a speed of about 1gbps to 10gbps. What are the standards you would expect in 5G phones. Share in the comments. Thanks for reading. --- ##### **Sponsored ( Powered by [dclick](https://www.dclick.io) )** [](https://api.dclick.io/v1/c?x=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJjIjoiZ290Z2FtZSIsInMiOiJnZW5lcmF0aW9ucy1vZi1tb2JpbGUtc3RhbmRhcmRzLWFuZC1ob3ctdGhleS1oYXZlLWhlbHBlZC1zaGFwZS10aGUtc3BlZWQtYW5kLXJlbGlhYmlsaXR5LW9mLW1vYmlsZS1waG9uZXMiLCJhIjpbImktMzU1Il0sInVybCI6Imh0dHA6Ly9kZWNlbnRyYWxpemVkZGVzaWduLmNvbSIsImlhdCI6MTU1ODQyOTYzNCwiZXhwIjoxODczNzg5NjM0fQ.QfkZo5HFo478BLcX9gMf3ivOlmSyej7xfnpursLEiPc)
