I was introduced to the band six or seven years ago from my friend who was listening to their album Pink Flag. I had actually been exposed to them much earlier, through Minor Threat covering their song 12XU, though I never knew that was a cover until this first introduction. It seems to be a theme that I wind up loving cover songs, thinking their originals, then discovering the original artist and finding that I love them too. Wire was formed in London in 1976 by Colin Newman (guitar/vox), Graham Lewis (bass/vox), Bruce Gilbert (guitar) and Robert Gotobed (drums) and were a big part of the burgeoning punk scene. However, even in the earliest music, they were trying unique things. When punk began to morph into post-punk, the group was very much on the forefront, and helped to break the various cliches that punk had fallen into, allowing them to stay relevant and original. They have continued writing and recording ever since; their newer material is actually really good too, sticking to some of the post-punk sound, but also incorporating more modern ideas.

Considering that this was recorded when the US was just creating its own punk and hardcore scenes, these guys were definitely on the cutting edge, and always strived to do something new. The song begins with the driving 4 on the floor kick and the 1/16th note hi-hat pattern, which continues underneath everything else that is built on top. The vocals build in intensity, starting from a spoken sort of level and continually increasing throughout the course of the track. The guitar riff that the track is built around is relatively simple, but when we reach the 'Chorus', they move from a Vi to a I, substituting a major chord for the minor tonic that is used earlier in the song, which gives those resolutions a bigger, more epic sort of feeling. It's a great way to open the album, and definitely sets the tone for everything that follows.
