##
Fear - We Destroy The Family

## Fear were a band who were very true

They were fast, aggressive, and offensive. I couldn't pin down their politics, as they seemed to hate everyone equally, and that was strange compared the other punk bands I liked at the time. However, this grew into a fascination, and I become a massive fan as I grew to really understand what they were doing in the late '70s and early '80s. Fear were one of the preeminent of the LA punk acts in the burgeoning scene of the late '70s (they formed in 1977), and are considered to be a major part of the LA Hardcore Punk sound, alongside bands like Black Flag and Adolescents (a little later on). The classic line-up consisted of Lee Ving (guitar, vocals), Philo Cramer (guitar), Derf Scratch (bass, also great name), and Spit Stix (drums), though they've had quite a few members over the years, including Flea, before his time in the Chili Peppers.

## This song is from the band's

first full length, The Record, released in 1982, which consisted of a lot of songs they had been honing over the previous 5 years resulting in a really solid bunch of extreme, hardcore punk tunes. I love Philo Cramers guitar leads generally, they are wild and noisey and bendy, and, for this song specifically, I love the dissonant guitar part, which outlines the super weird, out-there rhythm of the entire track. The lyrics are kind of scary at first glance, though Ving always did these things in a tongue in cheek way, and was probably laughing as he wrote them.
