##    <center><b>Harry Nilsson</b> - <i>Jump Into the Fire</i></center>

## Like many people, I only knew Harry Nilsson

However, when I got older, I dug into his discography and discovered that he was an incredible singer and songwriter, and someone who hasn't really received the widespread respect and admiration that he's due.  Nilsson grew up hearing piano from his grandmother who played, and was interested in pop music (specifically R&B) from an early age.  In his teen years, he got a job at a bank (after lying on the application, claiming he was a high school graduate despite having only completed 9th grade), and found that he had an aptitude for computers, which were just coming into use.  This interest in technology would wind up showing up when he began his music career, as he would experiment with vocal dubbing and tape editing, along with other in-studio techniques which were helping to create all sorts of new sounds on recorded music.  Nilsson had an incredible vocal range, and was a talented piano player and songwriter, releasing music throughout the '70s.  Unfortunately, at least according to legend, after a drunken night out, he got into a 'screaming' contest, which permanently damaged his voice, and caused him to withdraw from music. I'm not sure how true this is, as Wikipedia says he essentially quit writing and recording when John Lennon, initially as a protest in favor of gun control, though he never really wound up coming back from this hiatus.  Either way, he unfortunately stopped writing, and wound up passing away in 1994, at 52.  Today's song is from his 1971 album <i>Nilsson Schmilsson</i>, arguably his best record. This album has some incredible songs, <i>'Gotta Get Up'</i>, <i>'Without You'</i>, the aforementioned <i>'Coconut'</i>, and many others, though my personal favorite is this song.  It's super groovy, and a song I always find myself rocking out to when it comes on.</div>
