## The Vaselines are a group that I found

Every time I share their music with new people, they are struck by how many years they listened to these tracks thinking they were <b>Nirvana</b> originals, never knowing that they had been written by a quirky two-piece band from Scotland. <b>The Vaselines</b> were formed in 1986, in Glasgow specifically, by Frances McKee and Eugene Kelly, both of whom wrote the songs and sang in the group.  A bit later on they would add James Seenan and Charlie Kelly (Eugene's brother) to the band, but their early music is all done by the two of them, often using a drum machine to fill in the rhythm section, and sometimes overdubbing a bass part on their recordings.  Their first two EPs, <i>Son of a Gun</i> (1987) and <i>Dying for It</i> (1988) contain the majority of my favorite songs from the group, and were definitely ahead of their time, predating the alt./indie of the '90s.  This is from the latter 1988 EP, and is one of those aforementioned <b>Nirvana</b> cover songs, along with the title track from the <i>Son of a Gun</i> EP.  I really love the way their vocals work together, the difference in timbre makes for a great texture.</div>
