## Wipers were a band I didn't discover

The band was first formed in 1977 in Portland, OR by Greg Sage (vocals, guitar), Dave Koupal (bass) and Sam Henry (drums). While the punk/hardcore scenes on the East and West coasts, and at various big cities in the mid-west and the south, were thriving, the Pacific Northwest was often forgotten, forcing the kids there to develop their own scene and style, of which Wipers were a key part. The band was known for the use of super heavy distortion, which eventually would influence bands like The Melvins and Nirvana. Sage also had a very unique style of songwriting, incorporating highly melodic elements into their music, which resulted in some of the coolest tunes of that era of punk music. Today's song is the closing track on the band's sophomore album, 1981's Youth of America, and is a fully instrumental song. I LOVE the guitar tones on this song, and the songwriting, of course; it has such a unique sound, nothing like any of their contemporaries in the US punk world at the time.
