Setting up the garden wicking beds

Our block is pretty slopy so I created a couple of terraces out of some old sleepers I had lying around to put the beds on. I leveled them out the best I could using some bricks left over from a path I pulled up.

I really should have taken more photos but you can kind of see how these have been put together. There is agricultural pipe curled around on the base of the beds covered in crushed volcanic rock (scoria) for drainage. At the level of the gravel there is a hole in the side of the bed. On top of that there is a layer of geo-textile fabric to keep the soil from clogging up the rocks.

A pipe runs down the side of each bed so you can fill the base with water. The water then "wicks" up to the plants growing in the beds.

I ordered the amount of "veggie mix" soil and scoria that I thought I needed. Ends up I've got a heap of the soil left over so I'm on the hunt for extra containers. For some reason my other half doesn't see the street appeal of a load of dirt laced with manure sitting at our doorstep. Each to their own.

I do have a few concerns with the setup. It should have been obvious, but these things are FREAKING heavy!!! I did my best at securing the retaining walls and setting the brick feet, but over time these are going to slowly move/sink and when they do it's going to be a pain to fix. I'm hoping that this will take a while and I'll get a couple of years before I have to re-do them.

The other is that I think I should have painted the plastic or covered it somehow before doing all this. I want to eventually clad these with some kind of timber, but in the meantime there is light getting into the water reserves and I'm pretty sure algae will make this a nice home.

Ahh well live and learn eh?

I set these up just after the covid poo hit the fan and there were absolutely no seedlings at any hardware or gardening stores. All I could get were seeds. As the say... Winter is coming! So on the menu is Cabbage, Broccoli, Leeks, Lettuce, Carrots, Spring Onions and Pak Choi. I've never had much luck with seed, but we'll see how they go. So far so good.
