A geeky Guy's Guide To Father's Day
![](https://img.freepik.com/premium-vector/happy-father-s-day_199072-18.jpg)

Happy Father's Day to all of the fathers and father-figures out there! I've said it before and I'll say it again, but Father's Day just doesn't have the same oompf as Mother's Day... and that is OK with me. I'm proud of being a dad. I actually even think I'm a pretty good one, but I am definitely a below average mom. There are just some things my wife can do that I can't. Like listen to the kids without trying to solve their problems... or bringing human life into the world. But I digress. This is Father's Day! And what is more fun on Father's Day than some good old fashioned pop culture homages to dads? Nothing!

So here goes. here are my top ten best things to watch with your family on Father's Day. (Let's see if I can get the numbers to cooperate this time). Here's a little bit about my criteria. First of all, everything on this list has to be something I would watch repeatedly so they are all highly entertaining. For this list, I came up for a quote for each one. Even though I am a geek, I'm also a sap so the ones that made me tear up the most got higher scores. The one that had me flat out blubbering earned the #1 spot. I think you will see why.

10- Star Trek (2009 Reboot).

If you miss the first 5 minutes of this movie, you wouldn't know it had such a touching Father's Day moment. Did you happen to remember that Thor was Captain Kirk's dad? Not only is he a great dad but he also made sure everyone was able to escape the ship he was Captain of for those 12 minutes. This quote comes from the scene where George Kirk hears his baby being born over the radio. He speaks to his wife:

"What is it?" "A boy." "A boy? Tell me about him." "He's beautiful". "What are we going to call him?" "Let's name him after your dad, let's call him Jim. I love y..." -George Kirk

9- The Last of Us

This one could easily be higher on the list but there is some stuff competition. This show begins as a father and daughter story that takes a tragic turn. It then morphs into a dad trying to love again and a daughter showing him how. Wow. Maybe it should be higher on the list.

“I’ll take care of you. Just like I promised.” -Joel Miller

8- The Croods

OK I have to admit I'm super biased by this one because it came out when my kids were around 8 and 6 years old. We watched it together quite a few times and it always gets me when the dad saves the entire family and is brave to send them out into the unknown.

“I can’t change. I don’t have ideas. But I have my strength. And right now, that’s all you need.” -Grug

7- The Mandalorian

This is another show about a guying learning to love... and it happens to be Pedro Pascal again. Not only is it watching the relationship between Grogu and Din Djarin develop but that Baby Yoda is so damn cute!

“I won’t leave you. I promise.” (kind of sounds familiar) -Din Djarin

6- Onward

This movie blew me away when I saw it. Not only is it about Dungeons and Dragons (which me and my kids both love) it was an incredibly touching story. This one was especially special for someone like me who lost their father at a young age. This movie asks 'What would give in order to spend one more day with your dad... or just the lower half of him?" And we find the answer is "everything". This one deserves two quotes. One for dads and one for father figures.

“Over time, magic faded away but I hope, there’s a little magic left in you. And so I wrote this spell, so I could see for myself who my boys grew up to be.” -Wilden Lightfoot

"I never had a dad, but I always had you." -Ian Lightfoot

5- Shazam!

This movie will always be on my list for both mother's and Father's Day. Why? It celebrates a group of true heroes who do not get the credit they deserve: foster parents. These heroes choose to take in kids who need them. They provide for them. Love them and support them. Made respect to all the foster families out there!

“All we can do is give him a place full of love. Whether he chooses to call it a home, that's up to him.” — Victor Vásquez

4- Ted Lasso (Season 2 Episode 8: Man City)

I don't even know what to say about this one. Roy Kent, one of the most amazing characters of all times, becomes a father figure. the best father figure in fact. The first two seasons of this show are some of the finest television ever made. the ability to make me laugh and cry seemingly at will is truly impressive. This and the Christmas Episode are my two favorite.

There is no quote for this one. Juts a hug. A silent hug that said more than 10,000 words could have. A will cry every time I see it.

3- Life is Beautiful

This is a controversial movie. Some people see it as a farce making fun of the Holocaust, one of the worst things that has ever been done to humans by fascist monsters. But I always saw it as a fairy tale or a fable about a father;'s love and strength. Not even fascist monsters can stop this father from protecting his son from the horrors of reality.

“Papa, I won! I won the tank!” -Giosué “You did it, kid. You did it.” -Guido

2- Star Wars The Force Awakens

OK this is where my bias has gone off the rails. My name is "hanshotfirst" for crying out loud so of course I'm going to have a soft spot for Han Solo the dad. I still hold that the scene where he approaches Kylo Ren without his blaster in hand, is the bravest thing anyone in the Star Wars universe has ever done. Han's a gambler who was rolling the dice he could save his son. And he did everything he could to do just that.

"Ben… you’re my son."

"Come home. We miss you." -Han Solo

1- A Quiet Place

This one was not difficult at all and there is no bias here. This entire movie is a love letter to dads. There is nothing this guy won't do for his family (except maybe moving closer to the waterfall) but whatever. The best scene in teh movie and problem the scene I cried at most in the movie theater doesn't even involves words. It involves sign language. The dead signs to his daughter who is deaf...

"I love you. I have always loved you." Followed the most beautiful and selfless scream you will ever hear. -Lee Abbott

I get choked up just thinking about that scene.

Happy Father's Day!

What did I miss? What are your go to Father's Day shows and movies?

Those are some good ones though I have likely only watched about half of them! We are watching Murder at the end of the world right now and it is pretty impressive. I don't think my wife likes it as much as I do, but she hasn't given up on it yet. That has a pretty good father with the main characters dad being a coroner. Probably one of the movies I'd throw on that list is Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Sean Connery was an amazing dad in the end.

@urrirru ·
I have sons aged 10 and 15. Maybe we'll go to the cinema, or maybe I'll show them a film on the big TV. I've been wanting to show them Steven Spielberg's 2001 film "Artificial Intelligence" for a long time.
