No Comments! For a Better Steemit – Part 2

<p>There was this post I wrote and paid a bot to bring in some people who would read it. This was the result:</p>

<p>42 up votes, 10 views and 1 comment by the bot. This happened a few weeks ago. I received a message in my wallet memo saying that my post could get more exposure. In my naiveté I thought that my post would reach more readers, who would then comment and hopefully upvote me.</p>
<p>Now before you get the Lynch mob, hear me out. It had already been two months on steemit and I was getting nowhere and also a part of me wanted to try and see what happened if I used the service. Well the result is in front of you; an embarrassing 42 upvotes for a mere 10 views. I was actually hoping for the reverse – maybe 42 views, 10 upvotes and maybe a few comments.</p>
<p>Now that the confession is out of the way, let’s get down to business – COMMENTS.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Comments are the oil that greases the social mechanism of steemit and it is not an exaggeration, trust me. Imagine if there is this article written by a veteran writer on steemit. He/she pour their hearts out in writing it and use every trick in their arsenal to turn that post into a gem. Now, how would they feel if they make decent money through upvotes but get no comments? I imagine that it would feel good for a while because of the money but sooner or later even they would want some community engagement. &nbsp;</p>
<p>I mean one can argue that we should be writing for ourselves. Sure, then get a diary and start writing in it. What are you doing here on steemit? (Although I agree that the best writing can only come from a desire on author’s part. No amount of shouting from a publisher can force an author to produce his best work)&nbsp;</p>
<p>I have noticed that anything can be bought here - accounts, reputation scores, upvotes and even comments. But with comments, we can separate the crap from the good ones just after a read. If you are feeling nasty about a comment then you can even have a shouting match with the other user. But how do you argue with an upvote or a fake reputation.&nbsp;</p>
<p>If you like a post, then say so. Hate a post – hell even than say so. I’ll take your hate over apathy. If the post didn’t do it for you– then just drop a simple ‘hello’. Even better maybe drop a suggestion on how can I get better. &nbsp;</p>
<p>The point is that only with meaningful comments can true community participation be achieved. I remember @everittdmickey saying something like – ‘comments can be a metric of how many people actually read a post’. I don’t remember the words exactly but his point is pretty clear and I have to agree with it. &nbsp;</p>
<p>Okay that is it for today. I started writing this miniseries after @barrydutton and I got into a discussion over comments and posts in general. 'what do you reckon would happen if you post more often'
You know the answer yourself - my posts would be lost in the ocean known as steemit. The comments are there for a purpose. If people see that your comments have some life in them, they would check out my blog as well. You yourself did. 
I am commenting more now and would do so for a few more months and eventually taper of into an avg amount of comments. 
Sure I can copy and paste a picture and write a few lines and call it a post. I have even done that and would do it in future as well because some posts are just meant to be short. But I don't want that right now.
