CCC's Street Art Contest #135, Dominique Desbiens, Montreal
Here is my entry for this week's edition of the [**CCC's Street Art Contest #135**](https://peakd.com/hive-184784/@digi-me/ccc-s-street-art-contest-3576adbac9f8e) with this beautiful mural done by the artist [**Dominique Desbiens**](http://dominiquedesbiens.com) near the Jean Talon subway station in Montreal. It dates from a few years already (2008) but well preserved and so much the better because a lot of symbols and meaning in this work... I'll explain all that to you.

Elle date de quelques années déjà, 2008, mais superbement conservée et tant mieux car beaucoup de symboles et de signification... je vais vous expliquer tout cela :*

The mural is called **La sixième sphère de la culture** (**The sixth sphere of culture**) made in 2008 measuring about 12 meters by 8 meters. Cool as a parking entrance for this building. With the series of photos I took last fall, we'll observe the work more and more closely just to dive inside 😀.

[**Dominique Desbiens**](http://dominiquedesbiens.com) is a Montreal based artist. He started in comics in the 90's and is still active in this field. He's behind the EXIL comics collective and published in 2010 **Il manque aux humains un prédateur** (Humans lack a predator). I really like the title 😀. He's also a muralist as you can see. Socially committed artist, he wants to share with his work the humanistic values.

## La sixième sphère de la culture

This mural is quite complex. Thankfully [MU Montreal](https://mumtl.org/), the Montreal organization that made it happen, left an explanation on its website. "*The mural tells the story of humanity through different cultures, peoples and eras in a style inspired by the Symbolist art movement.*" (source: [mumtl.org](https://mumtl.org/projets/la-6e-sphere-de-la-culture-2008-dominique-desbiens/)). I hadn't seen all of this 😀.

Indeed, the woman in the center represents the Earth with 4 characters around who are 4 regions of the world at different times of human history. At the bottom right, we find the Middle East with the invention of cuneiform writing, above it's Asia with all its culture, Africa and the fall of the Roman Empire at the top left and then we finish at the bottom with the "discovery" of the Americas. The message of the work is at the bottom with the **End of Time** represented by a desert without life and without culture if we don't protect our planet. Already in 2008 with an ecological conscience 🙏.

> *En effet, la femme au centre représente la Terre avec 4 personnages autour qui représente 4 régions du monde à différentes époques de l'Histoire humaine. En bas à droite, on retrouve le Moyen-Orient avec l'invention de l'écriture cunéiforme, au dessus c'est l'Asie avec toute sa culture, l'Afrique et la chute de l'Empire Romain en haut à gauche puis on termine en bas avec la "découverte" des Amériques. Le message de l'œuvre se trouve en bas avec la **Fin des Temps** représentée par un le désert sans vie et sans culture si on ne protège pas notre planète. Déjà en 2008 avec une conscience écologique* 🙏
