Ozark Trees - Persimmon

This variety of persimmon is native to the United States.  The name "persimmon" originates from the Lenape indians, who called it "pasimenan."

These trees can get up to 60 feet tall with a crown spread of 35 feet.  

Persimmons spread by seed and by sucker roots.  

The heartwood of a persimmon is some of the hardest wood known.  It takes the sapwood almost 100 years to turn to heartwood!

The fruit of the persimmon is eaten by hogs, fox, raccoons, skunks, 'possums, squirrels, mice, deer, and quail.  

If you want to try the fruit yourself, I highly recommend the above article.  It tells you when the fruit is ripe.

Bryan's grandma had me try one about a year ago. I don't know if it wasn't ready, or if it was the texture, or what, but I was not a fan! I may have to try it again!

They definitely have to be ripe.  Bright orange.  Otherwise it takes a while to get the taste out of your mouth.

Only do it when they are ripe or you'll never get the taste out of your mouth.  Definitely read @papapepper's article first.  He explains how to tell when they're ready.
