Honesty and lies would they be the strange alloy winner of a fulfilled love relationship? A priori, this seems totally contradictory. Yet, if trustworthiness is a sine qua non to a stable love, whether one likes it or not, lies seem to be part of couples' lives.

Studies have revealed that about 10% of interactions between spouses contain lies, including exaggerations, semi-lies and false pretexts, as reported by Psychology Today. But are these little tricks really detrimental? It all depends on the reason and the damage that a truth might cause.

Professor of behavioral economics at MIT, Dan Ariely is studying dishonesty. He noted, in particular, that while he worked in hospitals, certain lies or attenuations of the truth could be protective. For example, it is best to tell a patient, "This will sting a bit" rather than "You will feel a horrible pain," he explains. Thus, if the lie comes from a desire to help the other, this is not harmful.

Semi-truths that lovers would use frequently in their interactions. One also avoids to always say what one thinks, when one is angry, enervated by something or simply because to formulate it aloud would be useless or harmful to the couple. For example, one is careful not to say that the guy who sat next to us in the subway was too much canon or that we hate his in-laws. Apart from annoying him, what would it be for?

**Each couple accommodates their little (and big) lies**


Between honesty and lies, each couple tries to overcome this dilemma by acting in the way that seems the most reasonable. So, some things need to be stated, some not or little. On the other hand, when you decide to be honest, you try to do it in the least offensive way possible.

On the other hand, the expert does not say whether to lie to his man by telling him that he has almost arrived while the door of the house is barely slammed, falls on the side of good or bad lies. Let's say it is necessary, reassuring. And then, after all, we will really arrive "soon": everything is about perception of time, in short.
