<liketuimages> <center>  </center> </liketuimages> One of my former students, Honoka, returned to Hiroshima this week and wanted to meet up for some chess practice. So we headed to a Starbucks located in an underground mall right in the centre of town. Later on one of my colleagues and good friend, "crazy" Shaun, joined us. That gave Honoka an opportunity to try out what we'd been studying. This was her first 1-to-1 coaching session. In the training session we started with a few quick games using the chess clock with a 8 minute v 3 minute (for me) handicap. We went over some of the easy-to-avoid mistakes that came up in those games and then talked about (1) controlling the centre, (2) developing minor pieces, (3) castling on one side and attacking on the other. ## Checkmate-in-1 Problem Solving After that we went through a dozen or so "checkmate in 1" problems by Lazlo Polgar. I gained a useful insight into the value to teaching those problems to elementary-level chess students. At first nothing was obvious to the student, but as we went through each example, setting them up on the board and letting her find the solution, she got quicker and quicker at doing them. There was also something therapeutic about the whole process of setting up the pieces, finding the solution, clearing the board and setting up a new problem. All in all, a thoroughly good session.
