# Pandoravirus: a new virus, giant and still unclassified

Almost all scientists who develop in the area of ​​health, have remained busy in the fight against the current pandemic, COVID-19. But others do not stop their **searches to anticipate new viruses**, and therefore new pandemics. They have made progress in the investigation of the coronavirus associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which was detected in China in 2002. Also with the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012. Not so recently, in 2013 , scientists discovered the presence of a new virus that is striking due to its **gigantic size**. It was discovered in Chile, Tunquén.

Since that year, researchers want to know in depth everything related to this giant virus. What is it like, what is its origin, what is it composed of, what is its development, its impact on man and the environment. Despite all these unknowns, **very little is still known about this infectious agent.**

A team of **French scientists** led by **Jean-Michel Claverie and his wife Chantal Abergel** contributed to the knowledge of this virus. In a layer of sediment at the mouth of the Chilean estuary of Casablanca. The facts were published in the journal Science in July 2013.

Pandoravirus has a series of characteristics that make it different from the others, since in some cases, it can be up to ten times larger than a common virus. From this point of view, they can measure as much or more than other small bacteria. In addition, they have many more genes. The influenza virus type A, for example, has a genome made up of about eight genes, the pandoravirus has even more genes.

From a more practical point of view, giant viruses, in this case pandoravirus, **can be seen under the light of an optical microscope**. 
#### Whereas other viruses can only be seen with an electron microscope!

# Would the pandoravirus enter a new classification?

A study by the **Mediterranean University Hospital Institute of Infections in France** reframes a recent scientific dispute about pandoraviruses. If they are a type of virus or if it is a biological being of a new taxonomic category.

##### There are even experts who remain skeptical of this possibility and consider that there is still much pending research to think of another biological classification.

“*They are called pandoravirus in reference to 'Pandora's box'. A mysterious box that appears in Greek mythology. It was put like this because its genome encodes 80% of proteins that are completely unknown that make this type of virus a box full of surprises. One of them, the recent discovery of energy metabolism* ”, Bernard La Scola, from the Aix-Marseille University in France, told BBC Mundo.

# Could they be dangerous?

“*Structurally, pandoraviruses are still viruses because of the way they replicate. Despite this, there is still research to be done to know if it is just another type of virus or if they are something more than that, but what is certain is that they are shedding more and more light on biology*", says David Lamb, scientist at the University of Swansea in Wales, UK.

Faced with the pandemic that is growing on the planet, La Scola recognizes that there is a growing trend to **classify viruses based on whether they can infect humans or not.**

“*But the world of viruses is very big. Pathogens are just a somewhat more studied proportion. Right now there is no type of data that suggests that they could be dangerous*”.
