How to Keep Your Focus and Thrive

There are some important things to remember when you begin to try and increase your productivity. First, you are trying. Remember that you are trying something new! These habits and techniques are new to you, and even if you have heard of them before, they are still new in your life at this moment. If you have been trying and failing, well, keep trying.

## First Step Is Admitting You Have Areas Of Opportunity

The first step is trying to decide that you want to! You have made that first step by reading this. You are spending your time wisely to try to become a better version of yourself tomorrow, and that is incredible! Good job, give yourself a cookie! You are seeing where you have those areas of opportunity, as we used to say in the corporate world. This is a subtile way of saying you have things you need to work on.

Trying inevitably means falling short sometimes. You are not perfect, but you are beginning a new journey of self-discovery and progress. Progress is the best you can do, whether it is big or small. Progress is progress and you should be proud of yourself for each step you take towards it! Some of my biggest lessons have come from my biggest failures. You just find the lessons to be learned, and keep pushing forward.

Secondly, you are on a journey to discover what works for you. Not everything that works for other people will automatically work for you. You may have to change some things, get rid of others, and add your flair to techniques. Do not be afraid to adapt both productivity systems and yourself to make things work. We are all individuals and no cookie cutter method is a one size fits all.

## You Have To Remain Focused On The Task At Hand

Life is about being flexible and focused, so regardless of whether you change some of these techniques to work for you, your focus must not falter or change. Stay focused on your goals, lean into them with all you got!

Focus is also heavily reliant on the systems you decide to utilize. You might load your plate up too high at the start and realize that you can't handle it. That is okay! Adjust your plans or goals to work for you. Some of you may know that I have struggled with this type of thing myself with piling on too many projects at once, that you lose track of everything you have to do.

Do not beat yourself up for needing to adjust your plans. That is okay! You are experimenting to find what works! Plus, what works for 4 months might need to be changed when your projects change, or your workplace changes! Life is full of unexpected changes, so do not panic when change inevitably comes. At Apple we used to call this dealing with ambiguity. If you know about the Lominger competencies, you know what I am talking about, lol.

Maybe instead of resisting change, we can welcome it as a new adventure, something to be excited about! Something that will help us adapt to new parts of our lives.

## Don't Fear Change, Embrace It

Do not fear or defend against change, let it come in. The change will help you create the perfect productivity system for you! You are your best guide, teacher, and motivator. If mastering your mindset, motivation, and productivity sounds like something only Nobel prize winners can do, but anyone can! Just keep your focus on why you are doing this. You are doing it for you!

Focus on how you will feel when one day you realize that your sleep, your mornings, and your workdays are a more pleasant and productive experience. You can and will continue to thrive by focusing on the good versus always looking at the negative. You don't want to be that one in the office that is always having a case of the 'Mondays'.

## Remember That You Are Still Human

Lastly, remember that productivity is not everything. You are not a robot, you are not perfect, and you do not have to be productive every second of every day. It is okay to have rough days where you do not get all the things on your to-do list done. That is normal and natural!

Life is unexpected, so you will not always have the ability to do everything according to plan. Allow the unexpected, take a deep breath, and remind yourself that you are human.

If you begin to get incredibly stressed out over productivity, that is a sign you should take a break from planning your productivity, and plan out your next chance to relax. Make sure you allow yourself to thrive during this journey. Nothing is worth hurting yourself over.

Becoming the most productive version of yourself is also becoming the healthiest and most self-aware version of yourself. Self-awareness means knowing when to take a break and try again later. Sometimes it means just out right quitting a task and coming back to it another day with a fresh outlook. And then there are times that something just isn't working and you just need to be done with it. That's okay too. As I like to say, you have to ride your winners and cut your losers.

As always, these are lessons that I am learning in my own journey. Writing these articles are basically me looking into a mirror and talking to myself. So just know I am not perfect and I have to take these steps too. I have had to find and still are currently in search of the best methods of productivity for myself. So I hope these words can help you in your journey as well!

I would add: “adding drop by drop takes a long time but still adds up”

Sometimes it’s hard to see our progress because it seems so slow but baby steps make miles.
