The Rosary (a short story)
# The Rosary

Nan woke up startled again. She had had the same dream all over; in it, a dead woman asked her to please pray a rosary to help her rest in peace. Nan had not been resting for almost a month now and she felt like stabbing herself in the eyes. She could only imagine how much more dreadful it must feel not to be able to rest for eternity.

https://cdn.pixabay.com/photo/2016/02/23/20/49/pray-1218506_960_720.jpg [Source](https://pixabay.com/photos/pray-rosary-faith-religion-1218506/)

She consulted with Juliana, a *rezandera;* asked her if she could pray for the rest of that poor soul. Juliana told Nan that maybe this dead woman had seen her praying and liked her way; that it had to be her. She suggested that she should ask the dead woman her name, go to the cross of forgiveness in the local cemetery, and pray there.

The next time the dead woman appeared in Nan’s dream she asked what her name was. The dead woman gave Nan her name and the dream was vivid enough for her to remember every detail in the morning.

It took Nan a whole day to gather courage. She asked her neighbor Luisa to accompany her to the cemetery (she decided to omit any details). She picked up some flowers from her garden, took a container with water, a piece of cloth, and off they went.

At the *Cruz del Perdón*, Nan pulled out her rosary and started to pray; Luisa stood next to her looking around nervously. Luisa had been to the cemetery with Nan before, but they usually visited the same *muertos*. The *Cross of Forgiveness* was rarely visited by anyone, except by those praying for penitent souls, whose graves had been lost, their bodies never buried, or their deaths had been too unholy to deserve resting on holy ground.

In the distance a strange old woman with gray disheveled haired looked at them. When they were done, the strange woman crouched, picked up a dried calla lily and waived.

Nan wondered if Luisa had seen what she had seen. She blamed her old tired eyes for her impossibility to discern whether this strange woman’s feet were touching the ground.

“Can we go home now?” Luisa asked.
“Did you see her?” Nan asked.
“Of course, I saw her,” Luisa said.
“I have to do something first,” Nan said.
“I’ll wait outside,” Luisa replied.
“Ok. I’ll be ok.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes, I will.”

Nan zig-zagged her way across the irregularly distributed graves up to the place where the strange woman was. She had vanished. The grave was unmarked. She grabbed a rock and wrote on it the name she got in her dream and left the flowers she had brought, thus replacing the indigent callas that lay spread around, probably thrown there from another grave or dragged down by the wind.

“We can go now,” Nan said to her friend.
“Don’t you ever do this to me. This is the last time I come here,” Luisa managed to say grinding her teeth.
“Don’t be mad. We did a good thing today. A very good thing. Someone will rest today for a change.”
“I know it won’t be me,” Luisa said, visibly upset. “You can bet I won’t sleep today.”
“You will. Don’t worry; you will,” Nan answered matter-of-factly.

I love the story. This line really gets the reader's attention, and explains Nan's willingness to become involved in the affair of a dead woman:
>she felt like stabbing herself in the eyes. She could only imagine how much more dreadful it must feel not to be able to rest for eternity.

The relationship between Louisa and Nan is wonderfully drawn. The scene where Nan gives the dead woman a simple headstone is perfect.

You certainly know how to write ;)

Thank you very much, @agmoore
People in my culture (especially our parents' generation) strongly believe that eternal rest can be alterred by many things and that Christianity has provided the tools to even the odds.
People like my mother strongly believe that communication with the dead is an everyday fact without the the mediation of any medium (who most likely may distort the whole thing for their own profit).
It's a fascinating set of beliefs we grow up being part of# Header 1

@agmoore ·
Hello, @hlezama,
This is not so foreign to me. When I was a child, my mother used to pray with us (me, my siblings) every night before we went to sleep. An *Our Father* and a *Hail Mary*. At the end of our prayers, there was a list of people to be remembered. The list grew longer as people fell ill, or died. There was always the sense that those remembered could hear our prayers.

After we were done with our simple tributes, my mother would go off to say the Rosary by herself. She prayed so much that there were permanent callouses on her knees.

The communication with the dead was not as literal as in your story, but I did relate to the devout Nan.

Hi @hlezama, a really touching story you have here.
Talking about life after death and the hand the living have to play in it, that's a topic that can never be exhausted.
In precise words, you tell your story, along with all the emotions it comes with.
This is beautiful dear friend, keep it up.

Thanks, @deeanndmathews
🙂
A change indeed.
We used to celebrate *Dia de los muertos* (*muerte* means death, *muerto(s)* (the) dead one(s)) as a big day (not as colorfully as Mexicans do it), but cemeteries became very dangerous places here, then people could not even afford the candles (we used to buy dozens and fill all the graves with light and noise), so the celebration has slowly but steadily, irony of all ironies, died.

Dear @hlezama It's a pleasure to meet you here with these beautiful photographs and this tale of a soul in sorrow! I loved the detail of wondering whether the mysterious old lady touches the ground or not.
I loved the way your story flows, it has a flavour of legend, with a very believable psychological foundation, more so for those who can understand some of the details of the culture you speak from.

I hope to read you again soon.

@katleya ·
congratulations @hlezama .

I thought the story was great and what you wanted to convey: a good deed was done by praying for a soul in sorrow......

You nicely linked the relationship between the people, the dream, then the suspense in the cemetery, the importance of prayer

I would never have thought of such a theme for change.

Well done. That's how we all learn

In our culture people who believe in the after life and the life in between (for those who leave prematurely or dragging some unsolved businesses) death is a transition and change for both the dead and the living.
Those changes can be enhanced or hindered by people's spirituality and willingness to find peace.

Loved this story , @hlezama. I particularly found this image beautiful:

>...the indigent callas that lay spread around, probably thrown there from another tomb or brought by the wind...

One can be an indigent even in death, even flowers can become one by the pure whim of the random wind.
Beautiful.

So good to have you over here.
And to think that I had initially described the *calas* as just dead or dried.
And now that I think about it, the tombs should be graves. 😁
I think that most of our dead loved ones have become indigents these days. The other day my mother was lamenting that she has not been able to go clean and adorn her *muertos* in years; most graves get looted, desecrated, or else get swallowed by the vegetation.
People got used to the damnedest things.

A scary story that you need to ready yourself upon reading it.

Luisa was afraid of course because she's not like Nan who has so much faith in praying. It's just not easy to deal with ghost because some of them has grudge.

Nice story even though it's scary. lol

Dealing with the supernatural can be scary for most. Even in Latinamerican cultures, where magical realism is part of people's language and world view, these kinds of stories can scare people.
I try to explore them from different angles, even as a witness who can't fully validate the supernatural aspect of stories or experiences but who loves the social and cultural implications of those beliefs.

This is a wonderful story, very well developed. The conversation between the two women, in an extraordinary situation, is believable. The intrusion of the supernatural seems plausible.

It is a sweet story, which is remarkable, because some authors would have treated it as horror. Absolutely not the case.

Thank you for posting this moving, well-written story in the Ink Well community. *Have you read and commented on the work of at least two other writers this week? (See The Ink Well community rules on our [home page](https://peakd.com/c/hive-170798/created).) Thank you very much.
In our culture the super natural is usually treated with astonishing casualness. My mother always says things like, "fear no the dead, but the living." We grow up seeing horror in real life and refuge or comfort in the accounts involving the dead; a really weird thing for most, I guess.
I'll be visiting more posts as soon as I can. It is encouraging to see the amount and quality of the stories in the community. A real treat.

Thank you very much, @young-boss-karin
You can blame @jayna for the brevity of my stories. I started my creative writing with her 50-worders' club, some years ago. Now I find it hard to write long stories.
I'm very glad you enjoyed it.
