I clearly haven't learned my lesson about sim racing games. I've got Asseto Corsa. I should learn how to download and use mods for it and let loose at all the content that has ever been released for that game, but alas; I want to see what else the world has to offer.

Project Cars 2 is probably the most fun "sim", yet I still find myself having played the most hours in Gran Turismo 7. Still, my sim-racing wheel is not in the lounge room where the PS5 is anymore. It's in the computer room, languishing at the pressure of there being way too many options available on the PC for sim racing. 

I've probably tried them all at this point. I wrote about iRacing's terrible business model not so long ago; and I figured it was time to take some... time into <em>Raceroom</em> instead.

So, how did I go? 

Firstly, the handling model of <em>Raceroom</em> feels a little less realistic than that contained within iRacing. Perhaps the free vehicles in Raceroom are tuned to be noob friendly, with traction control, anti lock brakes, and counter steering assistance gently introduced. 

The <em>best</em> feature of Raceroom, and the most immersive (and the one I want EVERY GAME EVER that involves racing and wheel support to have) is that when the transmission changes up or down a gear, the steering wheel jerks in tune with the transmission, giving you a feeling of inertia and immersion that I wasn't sure my wheel could even reproduce, even after almost a year and tens of thousands of kilometres.

My G29 has served me well. Excellent value for money! 

Anyway, back to Raceroom. So far I've described a single feature, and that is indeed the best feature. The game seems to have very reasonably priced entry costs (Free), and if you want, you can buy other circuits, and other cars for not a whole lot of money. The only problem is they're priced in Euro, no matter where you live in the world; which leads to the 2 or 3 Euro price point being subject to the fluctuations of financial markets.

There's some pretty fun cars in the base pack, and some really well designed fictional tracks; that are make for excellent use of undulating environments; and struggling gearboxes. 

The sounds of turbo chargers and super chargers, along with exhaust, transmission, and engines themselves are exquisite, and a collosally enjoyable feature of Raceroom. 

Where it falls short, however is the lack of individuals playing it in the time zone I'm able to play. I struggled to find more than 5 lobbies active at any one time, each with only around 5 people in it.

I played for about 8 hours, and this dissuaded me from throwing any money into any of the other tracks or cars, because... well; if you want to play online, you'd best have lots of people to play against. 

Handling was otherwise okay, and players get disqualified if they do eggregious things during races (with a certain number of incidents available prior to a black flag) - which prevents griefing somewhat.

It is a pretty game, and looks about as a modern racing game should. It doesn't go over the top with its visuals, but at the same time, it isn't ugly, which is a plus.

If you had zero money, and this was the only racing game in the world available to you; you could have a lot of fun; even in the competitions section there's a whole swathe of weekly time trials that gives you free access to tracks and cars that would otherwise be paywalled. 

Overall, it is good, but I think the time has arrived where I should learn about Assetto Corsa modding and go down that Skyrim like rabbit hole. Sigh.
