holoz0r's A-Z of Steam: Divinity: Original Sin II - Initial Thoughts
I've seen the headlines about <em>Divinity: Original Sin II</em> being the best roleplaying game seen in many, many years. I bought it some time ago, upon the recommendation of a friend that we could play through the campaign in a co-op manner. 

We tried to do that a few nights ago, playing around two hours, but found it a little clunky in terms of keeping up with the story, and keeping up with the party in a universe where every conversation with every single character has the potential to be incredibly meaningful in the grand (and believe me, its grand!) scheme of things. 

With that, I embarked on a solo journey, talking to every NPCs, bathed in excellent, consistent voice acting - and such an expansive, detailed world that it made me feel overwhelmed with choice. 

Then there's the combat, which is exceptional. Tactics are so important. Elements are so important. Ensuring you're attacking certain foes with magic, and others with non-magic attacks are so important. 

Armour is an excellent, and incredibly meaningful addition to your characters, as it completely negates damage of a certain type until that armour is exhausted. This is how combat should work, not determine a hit or a miss based on whether you're wearing lingerie or a full plate suit of clangy metal. 

Where the combat is unforgiving, is when you're playing on the hardest difficulty setting when you're still learning the initial mechanics, which is exactly what I've done. Here, every move on every turn is of paramount importance, and a single wrong move can cost you the whole battle, and give you a devastating game over screen. 

Dialling back the difficulty (especially as I'm still learning combat mechanics in more depth 10 hours in!) has made the game much more forgiving and enabled a wonderful storytelling experience where a seemingly random statue in a forest has some ancient narrative about battles between gods interwoven. 

I'll be back with more thoughts (and a full review) when I get there. This is a mammoth game. I'm playing as an undead wizard, using poison to try and kill my foes.

I still need to get into Original Sin II... I've only touched the first few hours of it. Though in those first few hours I was more impressed than I was with the previous one!

The previous one it felt as though it was made for multiplayer, and they simply slapped on a basic single-player. It was so weird having dialogues with myself in order to further the story and game. I didn't get very far in it as a result.

Am looking forward to reading your full review of this one. 😃

Working on it, its a slow burn game, and I'm trying to explore everything as I go, or at least as much of everything as I can handle. Every sub-quest and plot is filled with so much detail and world building.

Every story is told with such emotional impact through the excellent voice acting. It's great, apart from a few issues with switching weapon sets. (ie, I want a ranger to easily switch between bow / crossbow and two daggers, and that seems, hard)

One of the finest RPGs ever made! Glad you're enjoying it. The hardest difficulty is definitely for the hardcore turn-based fans that consider every move like a Chess grandmaster. On normal difficulty, it's much more for the regular gamer. I assume you're playing as Fane. No spoilers, but good call.

Yep, Fane :) 

Carrying around Beast, Red Prince, and Sebille. 

I thought "this game is more tactically challenging than XCOM2: War of the Chosen", when I got into combat for the third, or fourth time with the same party of foes. 

Then I realised. 

Playing on normal now, and it is much more tolerable, without enemies that have 5x the amount of armour than my damage can do!

Playing on the hardest setting when you're just learning, you like jumping in at the deep end don't you XD

So this one works better for you solo? :)

So far, yes - but there's some much going on in the tactical combat that being able to yell at a friend to flank an enemy would be incredible. 

It really exceeds the tabletop experience of Dungeons and Dragons in terms of combat!
