REVIEW - Annihilation - THE FILM, based on the Book - something that expands, but is different
Seeing this film within twenty four hours of finishing the book was a good idea. The book left me both inspired and uneasy, and the film adaptation added more depth to the book. The stories, however, were not identical. I don't know if the film draws more detail from the subsequent books in the Southern Reach series. I don't want to know.

If you want to read the book before you watch the film, **I suggest that you stop reading right here and now** - because it is not possible to talk about this film without spoiling certain elements of the book.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/holoz0r/23wLxRk44syNih9Y1KwCxr9VSBw2MoQWHpiMswTaDhvbwSAhh1Q8hmsdDxtBES2WCH73B.png)

In the film, The cast is led by Natalie Portman, (Lena) who is struggling with the loss of her husband as the film opens. Her husband has gone missing in a place unknown to her, and quickly into the film, he returns, and she finds herself on the precipice of Area X.

Area X is a place that is growing in size, and it has some sort of authorities concerned. As a result, expeditions enter the area in an attempt to find out what is going on, why it is going on, and if it can be stopped.

Unlike the murky, humid world described in the book, Annihilation - the film, is a very colourful and vivid world. But the story isn't colourful, it is dark, foreboding and full of more depth than you would expect.

![image.png](https://files.peakd.com/file/peakd-hive/holoz0r/23uQLeDgDoSM9JbE31uVsw22rHYnWeF1WS6ZNHVWAeKDNSKMJgydW26bei3uzUnu7uiNY.png)

It is important to note (again) that this is a scenario where the film deviates so sharply from the book (beyond the principal inspiration) - that these two items need to be tackled as individual pieces of media, instead of being seen as two parts of the same whole.

The film does an excellent job adding depth to the character in an immediate sense, making them more relatable. The book does this in a much slower, more measured manner, but the same cannot be said of the supporting cast.

There is not much memorable of the supporting cast, and for a book that was originally written in the first person, Portman definitely has main character energy laser focused on her throughout the whole film.

So much is *missing* from the film that I loved in the book. While the book only took me just over four hours to read (thanks to my e-reader for that statistic) - I felt engrossed, attached to the ongoing mystery of Area X, and felt like I was discovering it along the way.

The book reminded me of Rama. The film reminded me of nothing else, but I did think to myself, very much along the way - "this movie plot would make an awesome video game".

The film is a survival horror expedition. There's scientific discovery along the way, though this is abstracted down significantly from the novel. That's okay, you can't get everything across on screen, which is why we have books.

Read the book, then watch the movie. Then probably, read the rest of the Southern Reach series. That is what I am going to do.

The film did feel a bit thin when I watched it. Though from a technical aspect it was beautifully made. I worked with a guy that worked on some parts of the film and hearing the stories on the set design and how they shot certain scenes was really interesting. I think Alex Garland is a really creative director, one that really knows what he wants, though it always doesn't quite hit the mark.

Civil War was a great love letter to photojournalism. A very creative film. But I think it didn't help that it released at such a difficult time and people hopped on the concept to match their ideologies.

Although the movie was a little slow at the beginning, little by little the events developed in a positive way. I liked the movie a lot and I loved Natalie Portman's performance, because she transmits all the emotions in a very real way.

If I had to choose which to watch again, I think I'd rewatch Annihilation, but that is tempered by the fact that I only just recently rewatched Ex Machina. I am certain there are things that I "missed" on a first watch of Annihilation - and with many more books in the Southern Reach to read through - which I will, I feel it will inform the film more.

I did read that Garland and the screenwriter(s) didn't read the sequels to Annihilation and embellished on their own terms, and I think that they did a bloody good job!

I also could probably rewatch Annihilation, but I probably never will rewatch Ex Machina as it's one of those movies that really blew me away and the rewatch will likely ruin my perfect memory of it since a lot of the tension that was there on the original viewing will be gone. Also, I have a massive backlog of things i still want to watch so I rarely put something on that i have already seen unless I want to show a certain movie to someone and watch along.

I sure preferred the book over the movie, even though I watched the film twice ( mostly because I had forgotten I had already seen it, at first ).

The thing is, with a story like this, that it looks way more interesting in my imagination ( while reading ) than when I watch the adaptation by someone else.

I didn't know it was part of a series of books though so thanks for the heads up!

I do love the survival horror genre and Natalie Portman does a good job and is not hard to look at so this film moth be right up my alley. I skipped the spoiler parts so I could enjoy your review and preserve the surprise for viewing.

Intriguing that you were able to finish the book and jump right into the movie. I can’t recall doing that myself and usually find out years after that a film is being made. I bet that is a different experience.

Torn between waiting to see the movie til after reading the book (as I am in int middle of another one now) or just watching it and coming back for this post for discussion.

Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the review!

Movie then book would be a different perspective all together. Still a very interesting one.

@zekepickleman ·
For me, I find book before movie lets my imagination cast the characters and get the whole story. Then, when the movie hits, I can appreciate the casting, and skill it takes to convert into a screen play.

The other way, I have the whole picture with faces, and just enjoy the ride while getting more of the story.

Not sure what I prefer quite yet.
