A recent post in a Photography group that I'm a part of triggered a fairly decent response, and thoughts in me. The article was about Time for Print, and presented two sides of an argument, with an <a href="https://fstoppers.com/originals/if-you-shoot-tfp-you-are-killing-industry-452362">inflationary headline</a>. The headline was "If you shoot TFP, You are killing the Industry". <em>images are my own model left: <a href="https://www.instagram.com/hmb06/">Holly</a>, model right: <a href="https://www.instagram.com/burgerskelsey/">Kelsey</a></em> While the article made a case for each, it was definitely click bait laden enough to provoke strong reactions from me in the photographic group I'm a part of. #### So, what is Time for Print? Time for print is where a photographer, model, make up artist, or other creatives collobarate on a project in order to produce some work. No money exchanges hands, but time exchanges hands so that everyone gets a tangible benefit. The model, make up artist and photographer all earn experience, and they produce a finished body of work that can be a portfolio piece. #### My immediate response to the article > Im "sponsored" by my full time job but hope to develop a sustainable practice where all parties involved gain some tangible benefit. > Ive picked up a few paid jobs from the networking side of TFP, and that's been good. Has it put food on my table? Not really. > Has it put food on other people's tables? Definitely - through my travel do another location, or the bit of kit I obtain to continue completing artistic projects. > I find it alarming that in a short eight months, Ive created a body of work more prolific than the entirety of my five year fine art education which culminated in a masters degree. > I create images because of some devastating fire that rages inside of my body, and I'll continue to do it. If there's a financial incentive to do so, that's even better. #### My Journey with time for print I finished a University Degree in Visual Art and Design almost a decade ago. I majored in digital art, and did a lot of image manipulation and digital photography. Last year, after photographing a friend's wedding as a casual observer, I got the bug for photography again. At around the sime time, I was divesting my @splinterlands collection, which meant I had some spare capital to invest in some more serious camera gear. ... and invest I did. My collection of equipment grew quickly, as did my quality of my work and ambition. My first model was Kelsey, and the work we produced was pretty good after such a long hiautus. <center><br/><em>The first outcome of a "TFP" shoot</em></center> As per my original response to the article, and the conversation (which sadly didn't go very deep in the photographic group), I've created an enormous body of work since June last year when I started creating images again. My folio is now at a professional standard, and the only thing I've invested in is a combination of time, and physical photographic gear. #### This is just a sample of what I've achieved through Time for Print arrangements You can view the rest of recent shoots on my <a href="https://www.ivory-tower.net.au/portfolio/">website</a> if you want to see these in more detail. #### I'd love to know your thoughts Are there any other industries that work in a similar way, where people exchange their time with others in a bartering like method in order to both gain mutual benefit? Let me know in the comments section. <em>all images in this post are my own</em>

I have done my share of TFP back in London when I was still doing photography. I believe it’s a fair way to collaborate, both the photographer, model and make up artists need each other and collaborate to create the photograph. Under TFP only the photographer is allowed to use the photographs commercially, unless agreed otherwise and if the model release allows it. It’s a great way for amateur or beginner photographer or professionals who have stopped for a while and want to come back in the industry by building a fresh portfolio. I don’t think TFP is an industry killer. The killer are those new photographers who are charging low price for their work. Posted using [Partiko iOS](https://partiko.app/referral/quochuy)

Thank you for your input! I agree where I don't think its an industry killer either. It's a way to produce content that would've never existed if it relied on the exchange of cash between the parties involved.

So not a photographer but still in the art realm. I'm generally happy to help if it looks like fun and I like the people involved (this is necessary if it doesn't look like fun but would help them out XD) and even better if everyone gets a portfolio piece out of it. Anyone that asks me to work for "exposure" can basically go jump though XP I'd be more concerned about people who insist on undercutting everyone because they're so pathetically desperate for someone to buy their work, they're the ones that devalue everything. <div class="pull-right">https://technonaturalist.net/sites/default/files/styles/sensible_display/public/art/2019/09/heartfyn_0.png?itok=QHDoN0HE</div>

I thank you for helping me out with the artwork in that fabled, shitty Steem RPG I made once upon a time :P That's the sort of collaboration that wouldn't have happened without your help! Undercutting to the point of unsustainability is something that really hurts my brain - I don't understand how such people get on by - either through mathematical incompetency (ie, I'll drive 3 hours one way, and use $40 of fuel to charge you $50 to take pictures of you and your family, then drive back, edit, AND give you prints...) It makes no sense, and is a complete devaluation of their time. It'd be much better for such an arrangement to be TFP! (Or at least meet the person half way!)

If they just want to feel the rush of someone buying something off them/paying them for their art (even if the price is ridiculously nonsensical) logic doesn't even get a look in x_x

I think, as long as everyone is agreement from the beginning of any potential outcomes of these joint projects then that's fine. I think it's bad if people make promises of payment that can't be met or whatever. You have a wonderful portfolio of work, built up a relationship with these models who now can showcase their work and get future modelling working or whatever they want to do.

I did a number of TFP shoots years ago. I was hobby modeling and it was fun, but the cash output a bit more than I wanted for outfits and travel. Only one photographer helped with travel but I got some awesome photos and learned some good things in the process. Beautiful images and models.

Thank you. Appreciate the insight. I've helped with transport and costumes/outfits for a few shoots, as well as props. It helps when everyone is in it for the love of creating art. There's difference between sending yourself broke and doing reasonable, responsible practice that benefits all.

I agree! I was able to work with some very talented photographers and enjoyed each experience and the photos.
