La gran final de la Nations League me ha sorprendido, la forma en que venía desempeñándose España y con el gran nivel de algunos de sus jugadores tanto en torneos internacionales como en sus propias ligas locales me hizo pensar que el encuentro con Portugal sería prácticamente un trámite. Pero no fue así.

De entrada, pareció que mis especulaciones previas serían totalmente confirmadas y España comenzó jugando casi como una copia exacta de como juega la Argentina, dominio de pelota y llegadas, no demasiadas pero las suficientes como sacar ventaja y así ocurrió. Ya está pensé, de aquí en más será un trámite. Sin embargo, no contaba con que su defensa comenzara a flaquear casi en el mismo momento en que conseguía la ventaja y no pasaron ni 5 minutos y de pronto Nuno Mendes entró como pancho por su casa, bueno eso decía mi abuela cuando alguien ingresaba a algún lugar como si fuera el dueño, y convirtió un gol que dejó a todos pasmados. No le había contado a Portugal ninguna llegada de peligro hasta ese momento.

A partir del empate me dio la sensación que a España le entró una especie de crisis de confianza, algo así como lo que mencioné ayer al respecto en mi publicación, ya no fue igual, siguió dominando el juego pero con mayores precauciones y Portugal lentamente se animó a contestar las jugadas arrimando también algo de peligro cada tanto, no se crean, aquellos que no vieron el encuentro, que fue de ida y vuelta o lleno de emoción, fue bastante chato todo, decepcionante para mi al menos que me había hecho la idea de una España arrolladora y llena de buen juego, me equivoqué totalmente y puede ser que haya sido porque jugó con uno menos y no precisamente porque le expulsaran a algún jugador sino sencillamente porque su estrella más fulgurante prácticamente no existió en el campo de juego, algo pasó con Lamine Yamal que no fue ni la sombra del que puede ser, tanto que promediando el segundo tiempo fue reemplazado.

España tuvo algo de suerte y se fue al descanso ganando por 2 a 1 cuando ya para ese momento sus ataques no predecían un segundo gol, pero le duró poco, apenas comenzó el segundo tiempo una nueva jugada de Nuno a quien nadie marcaba jamás, lanzó un centro luego de un desborde y la pelota rebotó en la pierna de un defensor español y se elevó para caer justo entre Cristiano Ronaldo y Marc Cucurella, el luso se quitó al defensor de encima y con un simple toque estampó el empate. Unos minutos antes pensaba ¿qué hace todavía Ronaldo en el campo de juego? se notaba que los 40 años le pesan demasiado, no aportaba nada más que ganas de estar, algún quite desde atrás pero poco en ataque, en un instante recordé porque siempre está en el equipo, hizo lo que debía en la única oportunidad que tuvo, bien por este gran jugador que nunca hay que descuidar.

El encuentro continuó por carriles similares, España con mayor posesión de pelota, con alguna jugada de peligro más que Portugal pero jamás demostrando la superioridad técnica y de juego que yo imaginaba. Todo terminó en empate y hasta pudo haber ganado Portugal porque se le notaba un poco más entero, vino el suplementario y el DT español hizo los cambios que le quedaban, los lusos ya no tenían ninguno para poner y los españoles volvieron a dominar el juego pero sin lograr quebrar el empate final.

En los penales los portugueses estuvieron infalibles mientras que por España falló Álvaro Morata a quien el arquero portugués Diogo Costa le contuvo el remate.

Portugal campeón y yo sorprendido en mi buena fe. Cristiano campeón con su selección por tercera vez y con un gol histórico para él, fue el primero que convirtió en una final con su selección, una especie de maldición que se quitó para siempre. 

El año próximo será el mundial de fútbol, dos preguntas me hago en estos momentos, la primera es si Cristiano Ronaldo llegará a esa cita mundialista y la segunda si Portugal podrá ser campeón, en caso de dos respuestas afirmativas, CR7 se quitaría de encima la única mochila pesada que le queda y se convertiría en leyenda.

#### I confess that I have been surprised

The Nations League final surprised me. The way Spain had been performing, and the high level of some of its players, both in international tournaments and in their local leagues, made me think the match against Portugal would be practically a formality. But that wasn't the case.

From the start, it seemed like my previous speculations would be completely confirmed. Spain started playing almost like an exact copy of Argentina's, dominating the ball and making chances, not too many, but enough to take advantage, and that's what happened. There you have it, I thought, from now on it'll be a formality. However, I didn't expect their defense to begin to falter almost as soon as they took the lead, and less than five minutes later, Nuno Mendes stormed in like a fool—well, that's what my grandmother used to say when someone entered a place as if they owned it—and he scored a goal that left everyone stunned. I hadn't told Portugal about any dangerous chances until that moment.

After the draw, I had the feeling that Spain had a bit of a crisis of confidence, something like what I mentioned yesterday in my post. It wasn't the same anymore. They continued to dominate the game but with greater caution, and Portugal slowly began to fight back, also creating some danger from time to time. Those who didn't see the game shouldn't believe it was back-and-forth or full of excitement. It was all pretty dull, disappointing for me, at least since I had imagined Spain to be overwhelming and full of good play. I was completely wrong, and it may have been because they played with one less player, not exactly because a player was sent off, but simply because their brightest star was practically nonexistent on the field. Something happened with Lamine Yamal, who wasn't even a shadow of what he could have been, so much so that he was substituted halfway through the second half.

Spain had some luck and went into the break leading 2-1, even though their attacks hadn't predicted a second goal. But it didn't last long. Just as the second half began, another move by Nuno, whom no one had ever marked, launched a cross after a run, and the ball bounced off the leg of a Spanish defender and soared up to land right between Cristiano Ronaldo and Marc Cucurella. The Portuguese shook off the defender and leveled the score with a simple touch. A few minutes earlier, I was thinking, "What is Ronaldo still doing on the pitch?" It was clear that his 40 years weighed heavily on him. He contributed nothing but a desire to be there, a few tackles from the back, but little in attack. In an instant, I remembered why he was always on the team. He did what he should have done with the only opportunity he had. Good for this great player who should never be overlooked.

The match continued along similar lines, with Spain having more possession, with a few more dangerous plays than Portugal, but never demonstrating the technical and game-changing superiority I had imagined. It all ended in a draw, and Portugal could have even won because they looked a little more solid. Extra time came, and the Spanish coach made the remaining substitutions. The Portuguese were infallible in the penalty shootout, while for Spain, Álvaro Morata missed, having his shot saved by Portuguese goalkeeper Diogo Costa.

Portugal was the champion, and I was surprised in my good faith. Cristiano won with his national team for the third time, and with a historic goal for him, it was the first he scored in a final with his national team, a kind of curse that was lifted forever.

Next year will be the World Cup. I'm asking myself two questions right now: the first is whether Cristiano Ronaldo will make it to the World Cup, and the second is whether Portugal can be the champion. If both answers are affirmative, CR7 would lift the only heavy burden he has left and become a legend.
