Ese era el apodo de un arquero difícil de definir, para algunos un desquiciado, para otros un adelantado a su época, para una gran mayoría un arquero de enormes condiciones.

Bocón como pocos, no podía mantener la boca cerrada y en cada entrevista, partido, entrenamiento, sus declaraciones daban que hablar.

Comenzó su carrera en Atlanta, un club modesto que tuvo algunas temporadas en primera división aunque desde hace muchos años milita en divisiones promocionales, de allí pasó a River Plate donde fue suplente del gran ídolo de esa institución, Don Amadeo Carrizo, cada vez que lo sustituyó lo hizo correctamente aunque no era un jugador para River, no cuadraba dentro de los cánones que la institución de Nuñez pretende de sus jugadores, fue vendido a Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, mi equipo favorito, donde jugó 5 temporadas e hizo lo que pudo, el lobo platense no ha tenido grandes equipos habitualmente y el "Loco" atajaba la mayoría de las pelotas que iban al arco, otra cosa no podía hacer.

En un año intermedio fue cedido a Unión de Santa Fé para recalar en Boca Juniors al siguiente. Allí produjo sus mayores logros y es aun hoy el segundo jugador con más presencias en Boca con 417 encuentros disputados, también el de mayor presencia en el fútbol argentino con 765 partidos oficiales. Es poseedor de otro record aunque no se si todavía sigue vigente, hasta hace algún tiempo junto a Ubaldo Fillol, otra gloria del arco argentino fueron los que más penales han atajado, 26 cada uno.

En Boca obtuvo 6 títulos, entre ellos en dos ocasiones la copa Libertadores de América y una vez la intercontinental; en 1977 su actuación fue decisiva al atajar el quinto y último penal de la serie a Vanderley, a la sazón capital del Cruzeiro de Brasil, para obtener de esa manera la primera de las dos copas Libertadores.

Hugo Gatti ha tenido desaciertos y disgustos motivados por sus siempre polémicas declaraciones, como esa en que tildó de "gordito" a Diego Armando Maradona, unos días antes de un encuentro entre ambos equipos en la mítica bombonera. Ese día comprobó de la peor manera que el gordito era en realidad un genio del fútbol, recibió 4 goles del magnífico jugador incluido uno donde lo humilló haciendo que se tirara ante un amague para luego eludirlo fácilmente e ingresar con pelota y todo en el arco.

Su popularidad, su forma de vestir y su histrionismo hicieron de Hugo Gatti una figura muy buscada, poe el público, por el periodismo y también por las agencias de publicidad para promocionar diversos artículos; recuerdo en estos momentos una muy particular, de una reconocida ginebra de mi país, se lo veía tomando la bebida alcanzada por un mozo antes de lanzar la pelota con sus pies desde la salida del área chica, luego de la patada se observa como el balón ingresa en el arco pese a la estirada del arquero rival. Hugo Orlando Gatti, el loco, nos ha dejado en el día de hoy a los 80 años de edad.

####  The madman

That was the nickname of a goalkeeper who was difficult to define. For some, he was a madman; for others, ahead of his time; for the vast majority, he was a goalkeeper of tremendous talent.

He had a big mouth like few others, and he couldn't keep his mouth shut, and in every interview, match, and training session, his statements were the talk of the town.

He began his career at Atlanta, a modest club with a few seasons in the first division, although it had played in the lower divisions for many years. From there, he moved to River Plate, where he was the substitute for that club's great idol, Don Amadeo Carrizo. Every time he replaced him, he did so well, even though he wasn't a River Plate player; he didn't fit the standards that the Nuñez-run club expects of its players. He was sold to Gimnasia y Esgrima La Plata, my favorite team, where he played for five seasons and did his best. The La Plata wolf hasn't usually had great teams, and "El Loco" saved most of the balls that went in; he couldn't do anything else.

In the intervening year, he was loaned to Unión de Santa Fé before joining Boca Juniors the following year. There, he achieved his greatest achievements and is still Boca's second-most capped player, with 417 appearances, and the most capped player in Argentine football, with 765 official matches. At Boca Juniors, he won six titles, including two Copa Libertadores de América titles and the Intercontinental Cup once. In 1977, his decisive performance was to save the fifth and final penalty of the series against Vanderley, then the player of Cruzeiro of Brazil, to win the first of the Copa Libertadores.

Hugo Gatti has had his share of missteps and disappointments, motivated by his always controversial statements, such as the one in which he called Diego Armando Maradona "chubby" a few days before a match between the two teams at the legendary Bombonera stadium. That day, he saw in the most brutal way that the chubby man was a football genius. He conceded four goals from the magnificent player, including one in which he humiliated him by making him dive for a fake, only to easily elude him and then score with the ball and all.

His popularity, his style of dress, and his histrionics made him a highly sought-after figure, both by the public, the press, and even by advertising agencies to promote various products. I'm currently remembering a very particular one, about a well-known gin in my country. He was seen sipping the drink handed to him by a waiter before kicking the ball with his feet from the goal line. Hugo Orlando Gatti, the madman, has left us today at the age of 80.
