Lo recuerdo como si hubiera ocurrido esta misma mañana.

Salíamos del colegio salesiano a las 4 PM Como todos los días luego de una larga jornada que comenzaba a las 8 AM con un intervalo de 2 horas para ir a casa a almorzar los que vivíamos cerca y comer en el colegio aquellos llamados medio pupilos. Eran épocas bastante rigurosas en cuanto a la disciplina y esa tarde el rector estaba parado en la puerta de su despacho observando como todos salíamos perfectamente formados, primero los cursos de primer año, luego los de segundo año y así hasta completar la salida de todo el alumnado. Eran los primeros días de octubre de 1971 y yo transitaba cómodamente el cuarto año de secundaria en la carrera de perito mercantil, tenía conducta perfecta y nunca me había llevado una materia. Quizás por eso o porque el rector tenía mala vista, justo en el momento en que pasaba mi curso frente a El se me cayó, no sé cómo, un pequeñísimo juego de ajedrez de viaje que  llevaba todos los días, lo había comprado especialmente para seguir las partidas de Fisher y Petrosian, que disputaban el match semifinal para llegar a la competencia por el título mundial de ajedrez. Disputaban el match aquí en Buenos Aires y todos estábamos absolutamente entusiasmados por el juego ciencia, a tal punto que los diarios mencionaban que se estaban agotando los libros y juegos en los comercios. 

Lo cierto es que todos mis compañeros me ayudaron a levantar rápidamente las pequeñas piezas desparramadas por toda la ancha galería ante la atenta mirada de “Palomo” tal era el apodo que le habíamos puesto al rector debido a su enorme papada que asimilaba el gran buche del macho de esa ave.  Por alguna razón que nunca comprendí, no me paró, no hizo ningún comentario y permitió que continuáramos saliendo luego de recoger todo el desparramo.

Fue por ese entonces que comenzó mi entusiasmo por el ajedrez, el mío y el de tantos otros por supuesto. Fisher era ídolo mundial y lo demostró ganando el match 6 a 2 en menos de un mes.

Desde aquel momento comencé un lento aprendizaje, por supuesto sin aspiraciones de grandes logros, solo para entenderlo, practicar y jugar desde mi punto de vista, de forma decente, más como un pasatiempo que como otra cosa.

Mientras estaba estudiando en la escuela de informática que la empresa IBM tenía frente a la facultad de Ingeniería en la Av. Paseo Colón, ocurrió un hecho que cambió en parte mi vida ajedrecística, el centro de estudios se mudó repentinamente a la peatonal calle Florida en un alto edificio frente a una de las confiterías más emblemáticas de aquellos tiempos, la Richmond. En la parte superior de la misma funcionaba la lujosa cafetería, pero bajando hasta el sótano por una escalera lateral se abría un mundo totalmente diferente: mesas de billar y ajedrez, todo perfectamente dispuesto y separado para que ambas actividades tan diferentes no se molestaran entre ellas. 

El sector de ajedrez me atrajo inmediatamente, las mesas estaban llenas de jugadores, cada uno con su reloj,  aprendí enseguida que la mayoría jugaban partidas rápidas a 5 o 7 minutos por contendiente. Había jugadores de todo tipo y en algunas mesas se agolpaba la gente para observar,  en ellas los mejores disputaban partidas memorables a una velocidad de asombroso, principalmente cuando la pequeña aguja roja estaba dispuesta casi totalmente horizontal indicando que el tiempo se agotaba.

Allí vi jugar al Gran Maestro Internacional Miguel Najdorf, pero esa es otra historia que me reservo para otra ocasión. También aprendí a depurar esa técnica muy utilizada por los grandes maestros, dicen que entre sus virtudes está la de desarrollar el denominado “golpe de vista” ver en un instante diversas posibilidades, también ayuda en aquellos casos en que disputando partidas normales, alguno o ambos jugadores consumen mucho tiempo en las primeras jugadas quedándoles poco para el desarrollo y el final.

En cada ocasión que mis estudios y mi trabajo me lo permitían, concurría al sótano de la Richmond a jugar partidas de 5’ minutos, al principio fueron muchas más las que perdía que las que ganaba, pero con el tiempo fui mejorando.

Cuando ingresé a trabajar al Banco Hipotecario me enteré de alguna manera que entre las muchas actividades que desarrollaba el club de empleados, había un departamento de ajedrez y la buena noticia estaba en que no tenía que ir hasta el campo de deportes, alejado tanto de mi lugar de trabajo como de mi casa, allí mismo, en el primer subsuelo del enorme edificio del banco, había un sector donde los aficionados al ajedrez se reunían una vez por semana para jugar y también tomar clases.

Un par de años más tarde me invitaron a formar parte del equipo que representaba al banco en diversos torneos, sin dudarlo acepté el desafío. Ninguno de mis compañeros era un jugador descollante, menos aun profesionales o con ranking nacional, pero todos tenían un nivel razonable que les permitía defender al club del banco en forma decorosa.

1989 fue mi gran año, concurrimos como siempre al torneo anual interindustrial donde participaban equipos de muchas empresas, algunos muy fuertes con jugadores con ranking nacional. Nosotros entrábamos en la categoría de no rankeados y si bien nos tocaba en ocasiones jugar contra algún equipo que si incluía jugadores con ranking nacional, eran los menos y de esa manera las opciones de una mejor posición final se acrecentaban.

Los equipos debían presentar 4 jugadores y pese a que yo podría haber jugado holgadamente en el tercero y ajustadamente en el segundo, por estrategia me pusieron en el cuarto, supuestamente enfrentaría al jugador más débil de cualquier formación rival.
 
Me fue muy bien en aquel torneo y no solamente obtuve el premio al mejor cuarto tablero, sino que también obtuvimos como equipo el primer puesto general entre los no rankeados, un logro impresionante ya que en años anteriores nunca habíamos superado el quinto puesto.

Al año siguiente el gobierno de turno decidió privatizar el banco y yo me fui a la actividad privada, adiós a los torneos y a las prácticas semanales. Tampoco me quedaba cómodo el viaje hasta la Richmond, la empresa que me contrató tenía sus oficinas en otra parte de la ciudad.

Pero nunca me abandonó la simpatía por el ajedrez, con el paso del tiempo le enseñé lo poco que sabía a mis hijos, juego de vez en cuando con un amigo aunque la mayoría de las veces lo hago con la computadora, me conformo con eso.

I remember it as if it happened this very morning.

We left the Salesian school at 4 PM Like every day after a long day that began at 8 AM with an interval of 2 hours for those of us who lived nearby to go home for lunch and those called half-boarders to eat at school. Those were quite rigorous times in terms of discipline and that afternoon the rector was standing at the door of his office watching how we all left perfectly formed, first the first-year courses, then the second-year courses, and so on until the entire class had left. student body. It was the first day of October and I was comfortably going through my fourth year of high school in the career of commercial expert, I had perfect conduct and had never taken a subject. Perhaps because of this or because the rector had poor eyesight, just as I was passing my course in front of him I dropped, I don't know how, a very small travel chess set that I carried every day, I had bought, especially for him. follow the games of Fisher and Petrosian, who played the semifinal match to reach the competition for the world chess title. They played the match here in Buenos Aires and we were all absolutely enthusiastic about the science game, to such an extent that the newspapers mentioned that books and games were running out of stores.

The truth is that all my colleagues helped me quickly lift the small pieces scattered throughout the wide gallery before the watchful eye of "Palomo" such was the nickname we had given the rector due to his enormous double chin that assimilated the great crop of the male of that bird. For some reason I never understood, he didn't stop me, didn't comment, and allowed us to continue leaving after picking up the mess.

It was around that time that my enthusiasm for chess began, mine and that of many others of course. Fisher was a world idol and he proved it by winning the match 6-2 in less than a month.

From that moment I began slow learning, of course without aspirations of great achievements, just to understand it, practice, and play from my point of view, in a decent way, more as a hobby than anything else.

While I was studying at the computer science school that the IBM company had in front of the Faculty of Engineering on Paseo Colón Avenue, an event occurred that partly changed my chess life, the study center suddenly moved to the pedestrian Florida street in a tall building in front of one of the most emblematic sweet shops of those times, the Richmond. At the top of it was the luxurious cafeteria, but going down to the basement by a side staircase opened up a totally different world: billiards and chess tables, everything perfectly arranged and separated so that both very different activities did not disturb each other.

The chess sector immediately attracted me, the tables were full of players, each one with his own clock, I quickly learned that most of them played fast games of 5 or 7 minutes per player. There were all kinds of players and at some tables, people crowded to watch, where the best played memorable games at astonishing speed, especially when the small red needle was arranged almost completely horizontally indicating that time was running out.

There I saw the International Grand Master Miguel Najdorf play, but that is another story that I reserve for another occasion. I also learned to refine this technique widely used by the great masters, they say that among its virtues is that of developing the so-called "glance", seeing various possibilities in an instant, it also helps in those cases in which playing normal games, one or both Players consume a lot of time in the first plays, leaving little for the development and the end.

Every time my studies and my work allowed me, I would go to the Richmond basement to play 5-minute games, at first I lost many more than I won, but over time I improved.

When I started working at Banco Hipotecario I somehow found out that among the many activities that the employees' club carried out, there was a chess department and the good news was that I didn't have to go to the sports field, so far from my Both my workplace and my home, right there, in the first basement of the huge bank building, there was a sector where chess fans met once a week to play and also take classes.

A couple of years later I was invited to be part of the team that represented the bank in various tournaments, and without hesitation, I accepted the challenge. None of my teammates was an outstanding player, even less professional or with a national ranking, but they all had a reasonable level that allowed them to defend the club from the bank in a decent way.

1989 was my great year, as always we attended the annual inter-industrial tournament where teams from many companies participated, some of them very strong with players with a good national ranking. We entered the category of unranked and although we sometimes had to play against a team that had players with a national ranking, were the least, and thus the options for a better final position increased.

The teams had to present 4 players and despite the fact that I could have played comfortably in the third and tightly in the second, by the strategy they put me in the fourth, supposedly I would face the weakest player of any rival formation.

Everything worked out perfectly and we did very well in that tournament, not only did I get the award for the best fourth board, but we also got first place overall among the unranked, an impressive achievement since in previous years we had never been higher than fifth Market Stall.

The following year the government on duty decided to privatize the bank and I went into private activity, goodbye to tournaments and weekly practices. Nor was the trip to Richmond comfortable for me, the company that hired me had its offices in another part of the city.

But my sympathy for chess never left me, as time went by I taught my children what little I knew, I play from time to time with a friend although most of the time I do it with the computer, I'll settle for that.
