Al igual que en tenis, el golf tiene su Grand Slam, un mini circuito dentro del calendario anual de los golfistas profesionales que está compuesto por cuatro torneos que son considerados los más importantes y prestigiosos de todo el calendario, no tan importante por los premios que otorga, que de todas maneras son muy significativos, sino porque en ellos solo puede jugar un selecto grupo que explicaré más adelante y que está compuesto por los más destacados golfistas de la actualidad.
Por supuesto, estos cuatro torneos ya están fijados en el calendario anual y salvo muy eventuales excepciones (como la pandemia, por ejemplo) pueden provocar un cambio de fechas ya que el calendario de todos los profesionales que juegan en los más importantes tours de Estados Unidos, Europa y ahora también Asia, es muy apretado y una modificación de último momento podría provocar consecuencias no deseadas como por ejemplo que algunos destacados jugadores no pudieran presentarse.
El calendario de los majors es el siguiente: Augusta National es el primero de la serie y se juega en el fin de semana de la segunda semana de abril de cada año, en este 2023 se realizará entre el jueves 6 y el domingo 9 de abril. El siguiente es el campeonato de la PGA que se realiza cada año en el fin de semana del tercer domingo de mayo. El tercero es el Abierto de los Estados Unidos que se realiza en el fin de semana del tercer domingo de junio. Para el final el más antiguo y simbólico de todos, el Abierto Británico que se realiza siempre en el tercer fin de semana de julio.
A diferencia del tenis donde sus cuatro torneos integrantes del Grand Slam se juega en cuatro países diferentes, en este deporte tres de los cuatro se organizan y realizan dentro de Estados Unidos y el último en el Reino Unido. Ya está establecido de esa manera desde hace muchísimos años y es impensado que se produzca un cambio, aunque no suene justo y equitativo.
Augusta es el torneo preferido de muchos entre los que me incluyo; pese a no ser el más importante, el más difícil ni el más antiguo, posee algo mágico que se le endilga al diseño y presentación del campo de juego que es considerado el más bello de todos y es el único que se juega siempre en los mismos links ubicados en el estado de Georgia. El resto de los torneos mencionados rotan los lugares donde se llevan a cabo todos los años.

Para poder jugar el Masters hay casi 20 tipos diferentes de clasificación y para no cansarlos solo mencionaré algunos. Todos los ganadores del torneo en sus anteriores presentaciones tienen asegurado su lugar, no importa su edad ni el ranking que ostenten al momento del juego. Los ganadores de cualquiera de los otros tres majors de los últimos cinco años anteriores pueden jugar en similares condiciones. Los cincuenta primeros del ranking mundial al cierre del año anterior y a estos se le agregan los 50 primeros del ranking mundial a la semana anterior al inicio del torneo, dado que no hay tanto movimiento en esas posiciones, solo ingresan algunos pocos adicionales. También pueden jugar los ganadores de las tres ediciones anteriores del Players, un torneo muy importante organizado por los propios jugadores que para muchos es considerado el quinto major aunque en la realidad esa condición no existe. Luego viene, como dije antes, una serie de reglas que permiten el ingreso de otros jugadores que incluyen algunos amateurs, ganadores de torneos organizados por la PGA en el año en curso y otras varias reglas adicionales que permiten el acceso al evento a algunos otros jugadores hasta completar la grilla definitiva.
Este año los organizadores del torneo han emitido un comunicado donde dejan en claro su posición, se permitirá la participación de los golfistas que el año anterior abandonaron la PGA para jugar el circuito LIV, una serie de torneos que otorgan grandes sumas de dinero en premios financiados con fondos árabes. De no haber tomado esa decisión, varios ex campeones de este torneo hubieran quedado fuera de las posibilidades de participar. Esperemos que esto sea solo el comienzo de un acercamiento entre ambas ligas que por ahora se encuentran en conflicto.
La decisión de que estos cuatro y no otros torneos formen el llamado Grand Slam no está del todo claro aunque se asegura que tal asignación se le atribuye a Arnold Palmer, un gran campeón ya fallecido y quizás el más popular de todos hasta la llegada de Tiger Woods, que en los años 1960 mencionó en un reportaje luego de ganar Augusta y el abierto de los Estados Unidos solo le faltaba ganar el PGA y el Abierto Británico para completar su propio Grand Slam, de la misma forma en que Bobby Jones lo había conseguido en el año 1930.
Y Casualmente esa leyenda llamado Bobby Jones fue el impulsor de la idea y desarrollo de Augusta, si no la han visto anteriormente les recomiendo ver la película “Bobby Jones, la carrera de un genio” filmada en el año 2004 y basada en su vida, es apasionante y conmovedora y no solamente para los amantes del golf.
El mejor jugador de todos los tiempos, Jack Nickaus, tiene el récord por ahora no alcanzado de 6 triunfos en este torneo, seguido a tan solo uno por Tiger Woods quien pese a sus enormes problemas de salud continuará intentando igualarlo, al menos este año se asegura que participará.
