Desde el jueves y hasta el próximo domingo se disputa el tercer major de golf de la temporada, el US Open. Es el último en suelo americano y solo restará uno, el British Open, el más antiguo y tradicional torneo de golf en todo el planeta.

Este año y por 11va. vez en toda la historia de este tradicional torneo, se desarrolla en los links de Oakmont Country Club, en el estado de Pensilvania, a tan solo unos 20 km. de la ciudad de Pittsburgh.

Oakmont es el campo de golf más difícil de todo el circuito de la PGA y orgullo para el country club que lo alberga, los argentinos y toda Latinoamérica tienen el inmenso placer de contar con Angel Cabrera, quien en el año 2007 ganó este torneo con un score de +5, luego de una durísima batalla contra una cancha intratable, tanto que en 10 ocasiones en que se ha disputado el US Open en sus links, jamás nadie ha podido ganar con un score más bajo que -5, demostración clara de lo difícil que es dominar este campo de juego.

¿Qué hace tan difícil este campo de juego? se preguntará Usted. Todo el conjunto es complicado, desde fairways angostos rodeados de un rough alto y muy tupido, eso provoca que errar hacia cualquiera de los dos costados tenga un alto precio a pagar para el segundo tiro. Se completa con bunkers profundos y greens grandes pero con mucho movimiento y muy veloces, característica que se acrecienta a medida que transcurren las rondas y se secan. Dejar la pelota cerca de la bandera es una misión casi imposible y todo se conjuga para que los scores nunca sean bajos, algo que si ocurre generalmente en otras canchas.

El Us Open se caracteriza por rotar siempre en canchas más difíciles y no por nada Oakmont es el campo donde mayor cantidad de veces se ha disputado este tercer major del año.

Fue diseñado y construido en 1903 por Henry Clay Fownes quien curiosamente no era diseñador, arquitecto ni ingeniero, era un industrial del acero y aficionado al golf, Fownes tuvo como objetivo diseñar un campo que castigara los errores y premiara la precisión, vaya si lo logró. Solo contó con la ayuda de su hijo y jamás volvió a diseñar ningún otro campo.

Originalmente contaba con muy pocos árboles, algo que contrastaba con la tendencia habitual de la mayoría de los campos de golf en los Estados Unidos, en algún momento hubo una especie de rebelión y se plantaron más de 5000 especies arbóreas, pero luego fueron retirados en su mayoría, hoy en día los socios del club defienden a rajatablas los conceptos originales de Fownes y se niegan a realizar mejoras que no cumplan con la condición de la dificultada manifiesta. 

Fue remodelado solo en 3 oportunidades, la última el año pasado pero como dije respetando los preceptos de su creador, se aplanaron un poco los bunkers aunque se mantuvieron sus bordes plagados de rough alto y denso así como la profundidad.

En el día de ayer se disputó la primera ronda que cuenta entre sus jugadores con varios latinoamericanos, entre ellos el chileno Joaquín Niemann que viene embalado con varios triunfos en el LIV Tour aunque no ha tenido la misma performance en los majors, un solo argentino, el chaqueño Emiliano Grillo tratará de emular a Angel Cabrera, aunque su golf y su talento parecen no alcanzar para ello. Otros latinos son el venezolano Johnny Vegas, los mexicanos Carlos Ortiz y Roberto Vegas y el colombiano Nico Echavarría.

El campeón defensor es el norteamericano Bryson DeChambeau quien tendrá un duro desafío para mantener el trofeo ganado el año anterior en Pinehurst.

Según consta en la página oficial del torneo, algunos jugadores entre los que se encuentra Johnattan Vegas se quejaron días atrás de lo "increíblemente injugable" que estaba el rough de Oakmont, algo que provocó que los directores del torneo decidieran cortar en algunos centímetros la altura del pasto.

Al finalizar la primera jornada solo 10 de 159 inscriptos se encuentran bajo el par de la cancha y estamos hablando de la élite del golf mundial, así de cruel puede ser este campo. De los latinoamericanos Emiliano Grillo de Argentina y Carlos Ortiz de México son los mejores clasificados, comparten el puesto número 20 con +1 aunque esto recién comienza.

Además de lo habitualmente emocionantes que son estor torneos mayores, en este se agrega la dificultad extraordinaria del campo, un condimento que llevará incertidumbre y competencia adicional para que todos los aficionados de este deporte apreciemos aún más su belleza.

#### Oakmont

From Thursday to next Sunday, the third major golf tournament of the season, the US Open, is being played. It's the last on American soil, and only one more remains: the British Open, the oldest and most traditional golf tournament on the planet.

This year, for the 11th time in the history of this traditional tournament, it takes place on the links of Oakmont Country Club, in the state of Pennsylvania, just 20 km from Pittsburgh.

Oakmont is the most difficult golf course on the entire PGA Tour and a source of pride for the country club that hosts it. Argentines and all of Latin America have the immense pleasure of having Angel Cabrera, who in 2007 won this tournament with a score of +5, after a tough battle against an unbeatable course, so much so that in 10 occasions in which the US Open has been played on its links, no one has ever been able to win with a score lower than -5, a clear demonstration of how difficult it is to master this playing course.

What makes this course so difficult? You may wonder. The entire course is complicated, with narrow fairways surrounded by high, dense rough, meaning that missing a shot to either side is a high price to pay on the second shot. It's complemented by deep bunkers and large, yet fast-moving greens, a characteristic that increases as the rounds progress and dry out. Getting the ball close to the flag is a nearly impossible mission, and everything combines to ensure that scores are never low, unlike on other courses.

The US Open is characterized by always rotating through more difficult courses, and it's no coincidence that Oakmont is the course where this third major of the year has been contested the most times.

It was designed and built in 1903 by Henry Clay Fownes, who, interestingly, was not a designer, architect, or engineer; he was a steel industrialist and golf enthusiast. Fownes' goal was to design a course that would punish mistakes and reward precision, and he certainly succeeded. He only enlisted the help of his son and never designed another course.

Originally, it had very few trees, a contrast to the usual trend on most golf courses in the United States. At one point, there was a kind of rebellion, and more than 5,000 tree species were planted, but most of them were later removed. Today, the club's members staunchly defend Fownes's original concepts and refuse to make improvements that don't meet the requirement of manifest difficulty.

It was remodeled only three times, the last one last year, but as I said, respecting the precepts of its creator, the bunkers were flattened somewhat, although their edges, plagued by high and dense rough, as well as their depth, were maintained.

Yesterday, the first round was played, featuring several Latin Americans among its players, including Chilean Joaquín Niemann, who has been riding high with several victories on the LIV Tour, although he hasn't had the same success in the majors. Only one Argentine, Emiliano Grillo from Chaco, will try to emulate Angel Cabrera, although his talent and talent seems to be insufficient. Other Latin Americans include Venezuelan Johnny Vegas, Mexicans Carlos Ortiz and Roberto Vegas, and Colombian Nico Echavarría.

In addition to the usual excitement of these major tournaments, this one adds the extraordinary difficulty of the course, adding uncertainty and additional competition to make all fans of this sport appreciate its beauty even more.
