El gran país de más al norte de América tiene una reputación mixta en esto de cuidar al planeta, es decir "ni muy muy, ni tan tan", expresión que escuché de boca de mi abuela durante varios años sin llegar a comprender exactamente a que se refería, con el tiempo aprendí que era su forma de dudar de algo o de alguien, en este caso sería de Canadá como país totalmente comprometido con el medio ambiente y la ecología.

Si bien es cierto que el país cuya bandera exhibe una gran hoja de Arce en señal de la naturaleza y abundancia de esta especie arbórea en todo su suelo, ha firmado acuerdos internacionales como el Plan de Acción Climática que lo compromete a reducir los gases de efecto invernadero en un 40% para 2030 y al 100% en 2050, además de haber creado su sistema de tarifación de carbono, comprometerse a utilizar crecientemente energías limpias y renovables y otras inversiones y proposiciones similares, no es menos cierto que continúa la extracción de petróleo de arenas bituminosas ya que su enorme reserva de hidrocarburos se encuentra bajo esa forma que provoca que tanto la extracción como el procesamiento emitan grandes cantidades de gases de efecto invernadero y consuman enormes recursos hídricos.

Pero dejando de lado esta parte molesta del asunto, en el resto de las medidas se nota un importante compromiso con la preservación y recuperación del medio ambiente.

Y mientras tanto han llegado algunas noticias preocupantes para la Fórmula Uno que este fin de semana corre en el circuito Gilles Villeneuve, en inmediaciones de la ciudad de Montreal; justamente esas noticias poco halagüeñas están relacionadas con la polución.

Al igual que un par de años atrás, en estos momentos en toda la zona del circuito existe una densa neblina y una mala calidad del aire debido a la gran cantidad de incendios desatados, según las últimas estimaciones, más de 200 incendios forestales están activos afectando principalmente a las provincias de Manitoba, Saskatchewan y Quebec. Estos incendios han provocado la evacuación hasta el momento de más de 17000 personas y como consecuencia del humo que los mismos desprenden, una considerable degradación de la calidad del aire en Montreal y alrededores.

Sin embargo, hasta el momento las autoridades de la prueba no han decidido la cancelación ni la postergación de la misma y es muy probable que esa medida extrema no sea necesaria. Según parece, esta situación ya se había producido en 2023 y en aquel momento la carrera se corrió, ahora la situación parece un poco menos grave comparada con aquella, por lo que se descarta cualquier acción al respecto.

Como si este asunto de los incendios fuera poco, hay otro problema en ciernes que podría afectar, ya no la carrera en si, sino la concurrencia a la misma, se trata de una huelga de trabajadores del transporte público y justamente en Montreal, afecta el servicio de autobús y metro hasta el 17 de junio, un par de días posteriores a la finalización del evento.

Parece que habrá dificultades, pero nada que impida la realización de la décima fecha de un torneo que está siendo disputado y que este fin de semana prepara una sorpresa: la carrera tendrá a su tercera mujer en la historia en el puesto de comisaria deportiva. Se trata de la neerlandesa Natalie Corsmit, quien lleva casi dos décadas de experiencia dentro de la FIA.

#### Is the Canadian Grand Prix in danger?

The northernmost great country of America has a mixed reputation when it comes to caring for the planet. "Not too much, not too little," an expression I heard from my grandmother for several years without understanding exactly what she meant. Over time, I learned it was her way of questioning something or someone, in this case, Canada, as a country fully committed to the environment and ecology.

While it is true that the country whose flag displays a large maple leaf as a symbol of the nature and abundance of this tree species throughout its territory has signed international agreements such as the Climate Action Plan, which commits to reducing greenhouse gases by 40% by 2030 and 100% by 2050, in addition to having created its carbon pricing system, committing to increasingly using clean and renewable energy, and other similar investments and proposals, it is no less true that oil extraction from tar sands continues, as its enormous hydrocarbon reserves are in this form, causing both extraction and processing to emit large amounts of greenhouse gases and consume vast water resources.

However, leaving aside this annoying aspect of the matter, the remaining measures reflect a significant commitment to environmental preservation and restoration.

Meanwhile, some worrying news has arrived for Formula One, which races this weekend at the Gilles Villeneuve circuit near Montreal; this unflattering news is precisely related to pollution.

As was the case a couple of years ago, the entire circuit is currently covered in dense fog and experiencing poor air quality due to the large number of wildfires. According to the latest estimates, more than 200 forest fires are currently burning, primarily in the provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec. These fires have caused the evacuation of more than 17,000 people so far, and the smoke they release has significantly affected air quality in Montreal and the surrounding area.

However, so far, race officials have not decided to cancel or postpone the race, and it is very likely that such an extreme measure will not be necessary. This situation already occurred in 2023, and the race was run at that time. The situation now seems a little less serious than before, so any action is ruled out.

As if the fires weren't enough, there's another looming problem that could affect not only the race itself but also attendance. It's a public transport workers' strike in Montreal, affecting bus and metro service until June 17, a couple of days after the event ends.

It seems there will be difficulties, but nothing that will prevent the tenth round of a tournament that is currently being held, and that this weekend has a surprise in store: the race will have its third woman in history in the position of race commissioner. This woman is Dutchwoman Natalie Corsmit, who has almost two decades of experience within the FIA.
