In 1965, on Sunday, January 3 to be absolutely precise, we went with my parents and my brothers to the most important theme park in Latin America, a dream place full of attractive architecture, although adequate in its dimensions for children. It had been built by then President Perón in 1951, a few years before Walt Disney created Disneyland, beginning the era of amusement parks. Actually, they were not similar, ours was created for other purposes and was never exploited in the same way.

I remember that it was that date because there were only 3 days left before the feast of kings where it is customary in our region to entertain the wise men who went to receive the baby Jesus and showered him with presents, it is normal for parents to buy gifts (mainly toys) for their children and hide them so that they magically appear in the morning of that day. Children were also encouraged to leave water and grass for the camels to eat, which brought such characters to visit all the houses where children of an age to believe in this tradition lived and were "deserving of gifts" according to their behavior. However, the kings were so generous that even those whose conduct had not been so good during the year still received something. It is a tradition similar to that of Christmas in the northern hemisphere, although both were adopted here, to the suffering of the income of parents who had to pay for gifts on both dates so close.

That day the presence of the world wrestling champion Martín Karadagian, creator of that show in our country, was announced, probably one of the first to make it a show, many years before the current and famous WWE. The world champion thing was probably totally exaggerated unless we considered Argentina as the only country on the planet. But that was how he was presented and the young and old alike were delirious at each one of his presentations and that of all his wonderful characters, among whom I remember the mummy, the "wide" Peucelle, the Red Knight, Ararat, an Armenian the size of the famous mount and so many others that delighted everyone at that time.

When the time came, a helicopter flew over the huge property and we were all behind specially placed fences so that no one crowded and the aircraft's descent was safe. When the door of the flying device was opened, three characters dressed as the wise men appeared, in the distance, it could be seen that one of them was the famous fighter, when the rotor stopped they began to walk towards the public, who overflowed the controls to approach in a crazy race to the characters, including me who listened to my mother's screams warning me not to get hurt or lose.

When I got to the place I saw that the three men were completely drenched in perspiration, of course, it was afternoon and the summer heat was at its peak. I stopped my march, turned around, and returned to my parents who could hardly contain my younger siblings.

— What happened? —  Said, my mother.

— I'm not going to give a hug and a kiss to some totally sweaty and dirty guys  — was my serious answer, not very typical considering that I was barely 10 years old.

After that anecdote, I did not return to the Children's Republic until yesterday, when invited by my son we accompanied them with my wife to spend the day with our little 11-month-old grandson.

I was surprised to see it in acceptable condition, it was closed for many years, but during the government, before the current one, it was reopened after a complete renovation. You can see the passing of the years and that probably at the moment no budget items are allocated for its maintenance, at least not in the amounts that a park of this size needs, in any case, it is quite good and considering that admission is free and families can bring their own food, but it is still running.

Our grandson is still too young to enjoy the games and the visit to the buildings that simulate all the institutions of a country, however, we spent a beautiful day helped by the weather as it was quite cloudy, although without rain and then the sun and the harshness of the climate, rapidly approaching summer, did not conspire against our well-being.

En el año 1965, el domingo 3 de enero para ser absolutamente preciso, concurrimos con mis padres y mis hermanos al parque temático más importante de Latinoamérica, un lugar de ensueño colmado de arquitectura atrayente, aunque adecuada en sus dimensiones para los niños. Había sido construida por el entonces presidente Perón en el año 1951, algunos años antes de que Walt Disney creara Disneyland dando inicio a la era de los parques de diversiones. En realidad, no eran similares, el nuestro fue creado con otros propósitos y nunca fue explotado de igual manera.

Recuerdo que era esa fecha porque faltaban tan solo 3 días para la fiesta de reyes donde se acostumbra en nuestra región a agasajar a los reyes magos que fueron a recibir al niño Jesús y lo colmaron de presentes, es normal que los padres compren regalos (principalmente juguetes) para sus hijos y los escondan para que mágicamente aparezcan en la mañana de ese día. También se alentaba a los niños a dejar agua y pasto para que comieran los camellos que llevaban a tales personajes a visitar todas las casas donde vivieran niños en edad de creer en esa tradición y “merecedores de regalos” según su comportamiento, aunque los reyes eran tan magnánimos que hasta aquellos cuya conducta no había sido tan buena durante el año, aun así, recibían algo. Es una tradición similar a la de navidad en el hemisferio norte, aunque aquí se adoptaron ambas, para sufrimiento de los ingresos de los padres que debían afrontar gastos en regalos en ambas fechas tan cercanas.

Ese día estaba anunciada la presencia del campeón del mundo de lucha libre Martín Karadagian, creador de ese espectáculo en nuestro país, probablemente uno de los primeros de hacerlo show, muchos años antes que la actual y famosa WWE. Lo de campeón del mundo era probablemente totalmente exagerado salvo que consideráramos a la Argentina como único país en el planeta. Pero así era presentado y los chicos y grandes deliraban ante cada una de sus presentaciones y la de todos sus maravillosos personajes entre los que recuerdo a la momia, el “ancho” Peucelle, el caballero Rojo, Ararat, un armenio del tamaño del famoso monte y tantos otros que hacían las delicias de todos en aquel momento.

Llegado el momento, un helicóptero sobrevolaba el enorme predio y todos estábamos detrás de vallas especialmente colocadas para que nadie se agolpara y el descenso del aparato fuera seguro. Al abrirse la puerta del artefacto volador aparecieron tres personajes vestidos como los reyes magos, a la distancia se podía observar que uno de ellos era el famoso luchador, al detenerse el rotor comenzaron a caminar hacia el público, quien desbordó los controles para acercarse en una loca carrera a los personajes, entre ellos yo que escuchaba los gritos de mi madre alertándome para que no me lastimara ni perdiera.

Cuando llegué hasta el lugar vi que los tres hombres estaban totalmente empapados en traspiración, por supuesto, era más del mediodía y el calor del verano estaba en su apogeo. Paré mi marcha, me di la vuelta y volví hacia mis padres quienes a duras penas podían contener a mis hermanos más pequeños. 

—¿Qué pasó? —  Dijo mi madre.

— No le voy a dar un abrazo y un beso a unos tipos totalmente traspirados y sucios —  fue mi seria respuesta, poco típica considerando que apenas tenía 10 años de edad.

Después de aquella anécdota no volví a la República de los Niños hasta ayer, cuando invitado por mi hijo los acompañamos junto a mi esposa para pasar el día con nuestro pequeño nieto de 11 meses.

Me sorprendió verlo en condiciones aceptables, estuvo cerrado muchos años, pero durante el gobierno anterior al actual se lo reabrió luego de una renovación completa. Se nota el paso de los años y que probablemente en estos momentos no se destinen partidas presupuestarias para su mantenimiento, no al menos en las cantidades que un parque de este tamaño necesita, de todas maneras está bastante bien y considerando que la entrada es gratuita y las familias pueden llevar su propia comida, aun así se mantiene en funcionamiento.

Nuestro nieto es muy pequeño todavía para disfrutar de los juegos y la visita a los edificios que simulan todas las instituciones de un país, sin embargo, pasamos un hermoso día ayudados por el clima ya que estuvo bastante nublado, aunque sin lluvia y entonces el sol y la rigurosidad del clima que se acerca rápidamente al verano no conspiraron contra nuestro bienestar.
