The technological advances in computing are undeniable, a lot of water has passed under the bridge since Hollerith devised the punch card and from there the gale of inventions and innovations was unleashed. However, he always knew that there were certain restrictions or limits that were difficult to overcome, one of them the deadly rivalry between water and electricity.

It seems that until not too long ago that impassable barrier has also fallen. To be honest years ago I learned about the cooling of electronic circuits by water, they are methods that allow the circulation of cold water between the circuits, but without touching them, only cooling them by proximity. This system has been shown to be efficient, although it has a problem, the consumption of water in the large computer centers and mining adds up to make them somewhat unfriendly to ecology.

Some time ago they told me of a method used in some cryptocurrency mining centers or farms, they were experimenting with a cooling system where the processing computers were submerged in a liquid similar to water, but innocuous for electronic components and of course electricity.

Now a recently released news item mentions that Microsoft would also be immersing its servers in a boiling liquid to improve their energy efficiency and performance.

This "boiling liquid" sounds like something difficult to accept, but the secret is that this liquid has some particular characteristics that make it absolutely suitable for these issues, as I said, it is harmless to electronic circuits and also boils halfway through. the temperature that water needs to reach its boiling state; To summarize, the servers are immersed in a liquid boiling at 50 ° and thereby achieve that best performance and stability.

Additionally, this scheme has the potential to dramatically reduce the size of the equipment since the separation between components would be reduced to a minimum, which would also allow reducing accordingly the size of the farms and the spaces necessary to house them.

On the other hand, we have known not long ago that the possibility of generating and storing the residual energy of mining farms is being explored, that energy would accumulate from the heat that emanates from the large number of computers operating at maximum power. We will have to wait to see how this matter of immersion impacts those plans, surely something will occur to them.

Los avances tecnológicos en computación son innegables, mucha agua ha pasado bajo el puente desde que Hollerith ideara la tarjeta perforada y a partir de allí se desatara el vendaval de inventos e innovaciones. Sin embargo, siempre supe que había ciertas restricciones o límites difícilmente de sortear, uno de ellos la rivalidad mortal entre el agua y la electricidad.

Parece que esa barrera hasta hace no demasiado tiempo infranqueable también ha caído. Para ser sinceros hace años que me enteré de la refrigeración de circuitos electrónicos por agua, son métodos que permiten la circulación de agua fría entre los circuitos, pero sin tocarlos, solo enfriarlos por proximidad. Ese sistema se ha mostrado eficiente aunque tiene un problema, el consumo de agua en los grandes centros de computación y minado suma para hacer de ellos algo poco amigable con la ecología.

Un tiempo atrás me comentaron de una modalidad utilizada en algunos centros o granjas de minado de criptomonedas estaban experimentando con un sistema de enfriamiento donde se sumergían los computadores de procesamiento en un líquido similar al agua, pero inocuo para los componentes electrónicos y por supuesto la electricidad.

Ahora una noticia de reciente lanzamiento menciona que Microsoft también estaría sumergiendo sus servidores en un líquido hirviendo para mejorar la eficiencia energética y el rendimiento de los mismos. 

Esto de “líquido hirviendo” suena a algo difícil de aceptar, pero el secreto está en que este líquido tiene algunas características particulares que lo hacen absolutamente apto para estas cuestiones, como dije es inofensivo para los circuitos electrónicos y además hierve a la mitad de la temperatura que necesita el agua para alcanzar su estado de ebullición; para resumir, los servidores se sumergen en un líquido hirviendo a 50° y con ello logran ese mejor rendimiento y estabilidad. 

Adicionalmente este esquema tiene el potencial de bajar dramáticamente el tamaño de los equipos ya que la separación entre componentes se vería reducida a una mínima expresión, eso permitiría además reducir en consecuencia el tamaño de las granjas y de los espacios necesarios para albergarlos.

Por otra parte, hemos conocido no hace mucho que se está explorando la posibilidad de generar y almacenar la energía residual de las granjas de minado, esa energía se acumularía a partir del calor que emana de la gran cantidad de computadores funcionando a máximo poder. Tendremos que esperar para ver como impacta este asunto de la inmersión en esos planes, seguramente algo se les ocurrirá.
