Model: *Julian Met'yu*
I have been working on this series of posts about Ghost because I love this band so much. Ghost is, for me, one of the best things ever happened to music in a long time, and all their discography deserves a lot of recognition.
Today I’m going to talk about their most recent work. Ghost has conquered the world and become one of the most listened-to bands after coming out with several great albums for 12 years, but what impressed me most was undoubtedly their last album.
Impera was released in March this year that sounds like a remastered album from the 80. This is not the first time that Tobias Forge, the mastermind of Ghost, does music with a remembrance from past eras. That was a successful formula he used on Square Hammer and repeated in the two songs from Seven Inches of Satanic Panic.
Now the situation is quite different. A lot had changed since Square Hammer. Tobias has total control over Ghost music now, and his ideas are more consistent. Maybe that’s the reason why Impera is so great. This is so well done that feels like a “best songs” playlist. I still miss some features of Ghost music, but I have to appreciate this album for what it is, not for what I want it to be.

I will analyse every song individually before sharing my final thoughts on it. I’m listening to it while writing and I have been enjoying Impera since it was released. I have a clear opinion about each song. Let’s start.
# Imperium
Good starts are always important. Impera does it with a short instrumental paired with a sweet combination of acoustic and electric guitar. Maybe is not so representative when it comes to the concept. It seems to be something completely different, but if we listen to the whole album, it ends up having complete sense.
The song is so short that there’s nothing much to say about it, but at least is longer than the other two instrumentals on the album. As they do, Imperium tries to prepare you for the next song taking you to the right mood but also prepares you for the final notes of the album.
# Kaisarion
A lot of people love this song, but I don’t. Despite that, it is remarkable that the one song I can easily skip playing on the album is loved by so many. Maybe it's just me, and that can be a reaction that depends on my taste.
I’ll be honest, when this song was about to come out, Tobias explained that he was inspired by Run to the Hills by Iron Maiden, but it doesn’t sound like that. Even when it reminds me of the guitar riff a little bit, it has an AC/DC feeling for me, and I’m not a fan of AC/DC or anything alike.
Ok, but there are things I like about Kaisarion. The chorus is catchy and makes you sing along. And the song starts with a scream that gives you goosebumps right away. The Guitar solo goes through the same path. I can’t objectively say anything bad about the song but is not special to me.
# Spillways
I can’t even explain how much I love the chorus of this song. But ok, let’s start with the intro. That keyboard, that rhythm... This is Bon Jovi made satanic. But here starts to be obvious something about Impera: even though most of the song sounds like 80’s rock, they are Ghost songs and have a particular essence.
The bass in this song is strong and has a lot of presence. Another detail that is noticeable all over Impera is the way it makes the bass easy to hear. The chorus is what I expect from Tobias. Strong, catchy, and memorable.

# Call me little sunshine
One of my favourites songs on Impera and one of my favourites from Ghost so far. If Spillways had a lot of bass, this song is all about it. Even though the album is more about the 80’s rock, this is 90s metal for me. Is quite similar to what Metallica did in that decade.
Maybe the chorus is hard to swallow at first. You will probably expect a big and epic one, but it drops to a low “call me” with a reduced rhythm. The pre-chorus is way more epic. This is not so important since the creativity behind it is something to value.
# Hunters Moon
This song isn't the highlight for me and probably for anyone else, but I don't know what's so special about it that every time I listen to it, I feel like I enjoy it more. I love the opening guitar, I love the post-chorus guitar, I love the solo, I love the roar of "hunters moon" and the classic "churchy" Ghost chorus that reminds you that you're listening to a band that has evolved a lot.
Like the previous song, this one has a metal feel to it. However, here the vintage sound blurs a little too much.
# Watcher In the Sky
I've heard it said many times that Ghost isn't metal, which is partially true, they're not totally metal, but when they are they leave no room for reasonable doubt. Watcher in the Sky would be Ghost's hardest and heaviest song if it weren't for the fact that it is surpassed two songs later.
Watcher in the Sky is frantic and makes you want to break everything, and it also has a catchy chorus as only Tobias Forge knows how to do.
# Dominion
This track to the next song is little more than an orchestral instrumental with a focus on the winds. It's interesting but only serves as an introduction to what follows.

# Twenties
There was a big controversy since it became known what this song was about before we could even hear it. Ghost fans were seriously concerned, not because it's a political satire, but because this is a reggaeton song.
Well, it's not reggaeton exactly, but it has the same rhythmic pattern. The most interesting thing about it is that when we finally got to hear Twenties, it turned out much better than anyone expected. Twenties is a very unique song, with a violent power capable of breaking necks seduced by its rhythm.
However, this track dissatisfied many. I loved it, but some hated it. It was even classified as Ghost's worst song. But understanding that the lyrics are a satire and the rhythm a great experiment, I can't say anything bad about it.
# Darkness at the heart of my love
Before I listened to Impera for the first time, I read an advance review of the album where it was stated that this song was the best ballad Ghost has ever made. You have to have a lot of confidence to say that when there are songs like He Is, so I had very high expectations for it. When I finally listened to it, I wasn't disappointed at all.
This song is a bit similar to the He Is formula, but the structure brings in more of the 80's sound to keep that nostalgic feeling in Impera that was lost three songs ago.
# Griftwood
I have to say it: to record this song Tobias went into the studio, played Year Zero singing all in Latin, invoked Satan, and asked him to bring Eddie Van Halen in for 6 minutes to play guitar.
That's the only rational explanation and should be canon. The guitar is too similar to Ain't Talking 'Bout Love, but since it's already established, it has a much heavier sound.
The chorus is one of those that compels you to sing it with death threats. The guitar solo shines with a classic essence that combines perfectly with the Van Halen style that permeates the whole song.

# Bite of passage
This is nothing more than a standalone intro. Thirty very dark seconds with a 7-second repeating guitar. I'd like to see it become a bigger song for the eerie feeling it generates, but it doesn't amount to much, it barely complements the last song on the album.
# Respite on the Spitalfields
A half-ballad, half-hard rock song. This is the longest and most musically complex song on the album, which was already becoming very simple, but creative. Such a consistently good album needed to close with a song that showed the work behind it, and with a production like this, it is clear that Tobias Forge is a special musician.
Respite on the Spitalfields goes from intense to delicate from one second to the next, with drums closer to the pop of four decades ago. And just when the song seems to be less rock-oriented, a heartbreaking voice and a powerful riff appear. The song is a journey through emotions comparable to those produced by a good story.
And to close the song and the album, the same notes that started Impera appear to end one of the best albums that saw the light of day this year.
# Conclusions
The album Prequelle did not please many, Meliora had been so spectacular that it became very difficult to evaluate Prequelle positively, but Impera is the opposite. It is on the same level as Meliora and rises above it. As a whole, it is probably Ghost's best album so far.
I give this album a 10 and put it among my all-time favourites as I wait patiently and with high expectations for the next one. That has been all. I send you all a big hug.

He estado trabajando en esta serie de posts sobre Ghost porque me gusta mucho esta banda. Ghost es, para mí, una de las mejores cosas que le han pasado a la música en mucho tiempo, y toda su discografía merece gran reconocimiento.
Hoy voy a hablar de su trabajo más reciente. Ghost ha conquistado el mundo y se ha convertido en una de las bandas más escuchadas después de sacar varios discos geniales durante 12 años, pero lo que más me ha impresionado ha sido sin duda su último álbum.
En marzo de este año salió a la venta Impera, que suena como un álbum remasterizado de los años 80. No es la primera vez que Tobias Forge, el cerebro de Ghost, hace música con un recuerdo de épocas pasadas. Esa fue una fórmula exitosa que utilizó en Square Hammer y que repitió en las dos canciones de Seven Inches of Satanic Panic.
Ahora la situación es muy diferente. Han cambiado muchas cosas desde Square Hammer. Tobias tiene ahora un control total sobre la música de Ghost, y sus ideas son más consistentes. Tal vez esa sea la razón por la que Impera es tan genial. Está tan bien hecho que parece una lista de reproducción de "mejores canciones". Sigo echando de menos algunas características de la música de Ghost, pero tengo que apreciar este álbum por lo que es, no por lo que quiero que sea.

Analizaré cada canción individualmente antes de compartir mi opinión final sobre ella. Lo estoy escuchando mientras escribo y he disfrutado de Impera desde que salió al mercado. Tengo una opinión clara sobre cada canción. Empecemos.

# Imperium
Los buenos comienzos siempre son importantes. Impera lo hace con un corto instrumental emparejado con una dulce combinación de guitarra acústica y eléctrica. Tal vez no sea tan representativo en cuanto al concepto. Parece algo completamente diferente, pero si escuchamos el álbum completo, acaba teniendo todo el sentido.
La canción es tan corta que no hay mucho que decir sobre ella, pero al menos es más larga que los otros dos instrumentales del álbum. Al igual que ellos, Imperium trata de prepararte para la siguiente canción llevándote al estado de ánimo adecuado, pero también te prepara para las notas finales del álbum.
# Kaisarion
A mucha gente le encanta esta canción, pero a mí no. A pesar de eso, es notable que la única canción que puedo dejar de tocar fácilmente en el álbum sea amada por tantos. Tal vez sea sólo yo, y puede ser una reacción que depende de mis gustos.
Seré sincero, cuando esta canción estaba a punto de salir, Tobias explicó que se había inspirado en Run to the Hills de Iron Maiden, pero no suena así. Aunque me recuerde un poco al riff de guitarra, para mí tiene una sensación de AC/DC, y no soy fan de AC/DC ni nada parecido.
Vale, pero hay cosas que me gustan de Kaisarion. El estribillo es pegadizo y te hace cantar. Y la canción empieza con un grito que te pone la piel de gallina enseguida. El solo de guitarra va por el mismo camino. No puedo decir objetivamente nada malo de la canción pero no es especial para mí.
# Spillways
No puedo ni explicar lo mucho que me gusta el estribillo de esta canción. Pero bueno, empecemos por la intro. Ese teclado, ese ritmo... Esto es Bon Jovi hecho satánico. Pero aquí empieza a ser notorio algo sobre Impera: aunque la mayor parte de la canción suena a rock de los 80, son canciones de Ghost y tienen una esencia particular.
El bajo en esta canción es fuerte y tiene mucha presencia. Otro detalle que se nota en todo Impera es la forma en que hace que el bajo se escuche con facilidad. El estribillo es lo que espero de Tobias. Fuerte, pegadizo y memorable.

# Call me little sunshine
Una de mis canciones favoritas de Impera y una de mis favoritas de Ghost hasta ahora. Si Spillways tenía mucho bajo, esta canción lo es todo. Aunque el disco es más del rock de los 80, para mí esto es metal de los 90. Se parece bastante a lo que hacía Metallica en esa década.
Quizá el estribillo sea difícil de tragar al principio. Probablemente esperes uno grande y épico, pero baja a un "call me" bajo con un ritmo reducido. El preestribillo es mucho más épico. Esto no es tan importante ya que la creatividad que hay detrás es algo a valorar.
# Hunters Moon
Esta canción no es lo más destacado para mí ni probablemente para nadie, pero no sé qué tiene de especial que cada vez que la escucho siento que la disfruto más. Me encanta la guitarra inicial, me encanta la guitarra posterior al estribillo, me encanta el solo, me encanta el rugido de "hunters moon" y el clásico coro "eclesiastico" de Ghost que te recuerda que estás escuchando a una banda que ha evolucionado mucho.
Al igual que la canción anterior, ésta tiene un aire metálico. Sin embargo, aquí el sonido vintage se difumina demasiado.
# Watcher In the Sky
He oído decir muchas veces que Ghost no es metal, lo cual es parcialmente cierto, no son totalmente metal, pero cuando lo son no dejan lugar a dudas razonables. Watcher in the Sky sería la canción más dura y pesada de Ghost si no fuera porque es superada dos canciones después.
Watcher in the Sky es frenética y da ganas de romperlo todo, y además tiene un estribillo pegadizo como sólo Tobias Forge sabe hacer.
# Dominion
Esta pista hasta la siguiente canción es poco más que un instrumental orquestal centrado en los vientos. Es interesante pero sólo sirve como introducción a lo que sigue.

# Twenties
Hubo una gran controversia desde que se supo de qué iba esta canción antes de poder escucharla. Los fans de Ghost estaban seriamente preocupados, no porque sea una sátira política, sino porque se trata de una canción de reggaetón.
Bueno, no es reggaetón exactamente, pero tiene el mismo patrón rítmico. Lo más interesante es que, cuando por fin pudimos escuchar Twenties, resultó mucho mejor de lo que se esperaba. Twenties es una canción muy singular, con una potencia violenta capaz de romper cuellos seducidos por su ritmo.
Sin embargo, este tema no satisfizo a muchos. A mí me encantó, pero algunos la odiaron. Incluso fue clasificada como la peor canción de Ghost. Pero entendiendo que la letra es una sátira y el ritmo un gran experimento, no puedo decir nada malo de ella.
# Darkness at the heart of my love
Antes de escuchar Impera por primera vez, leí una reseña de avance del disco donde se afirmaba que esta canción era la mejor balada que Ghost había hecho. Hay que tener mucha confianza para decir eso cuando hay canciones como He Is, así que tenía unas expectativas muy altas al respecto. Cuando finalmente la escuché, no me decepcionó en absoluto.
Esta canción es un poco similar a la fórmula de He Is, pero la estructura aporta más del sonido de los 80 para mantener ese sentimiento nostálgico en Impera que se perdió hace tres canciones.
# Griftwood
Tengo que decirlo: para grabar esta canción Tobías se metió en el estudio, tocó Year Zero cantando todo en latín, invocó a Satanás y le pidió que trajera a Eddie Van Halen durante 6 minutos para tocar la guitarra.
Esa es la única explicación racional y debería ser el canon. La guitarra se parece demasiado a la de Ain't Talking 'Bout Love, pero como ya está establecida, tiene un sonido mucho más pesado.
El estribillo es de esos que te obligan a cantarlo con amenazas de muerte. El solo de guitarra brilla con una esencia clásica que combina perfectamente con el estilo Van Halen que impregna toda la canción.

# Bite of passage
Esto no es más que una intro independiente. Treinta segundos muy oscuros con una guitarra que se repite durante 7 segundos. Me gustaría que se convirtiera en una canción más grande por la sensación espeluznante que genera, pero no llega a mucho, apenas complementa la última canción del disco.
# Respite on the Spitalfields
Una canción mitad balada, mitad hard rock. Es la canción más larga y musicalmente más compleja del álbum, que ya se estaba volviendo muy sencillo, pero creativo. Un álbum tan consistentemente bueno necesitaba cerrar con una canción que mostrara el trabajo que hay detrás, y con una producción como ésta, queda claro que Tobias Forge es un músico especial.
Respite on the Spitalfields pasa de la intensidad a la delicadeza de un segundo a otro, con una batería más cercana al pop de hace cuatro décadas. Y justo cuando la canción parece estar menos orientada al rock, aparece una voz desgarradora y un potente riff. La canción es un viaje por las emociones comparable al que produce una buena historia.
Y para cerrar la canción y el disco, aparecen las mismas notas con las que empezó Impera para terminar uno de los mejores albumes que han visto la luz este año.
# Conclusiones
El álbum Prequelle no gustó a muchos, Meliora había sido tan espectacular que se hacía muy difícil valorar positivamente Prequelle, pero Impera es todo lo contrario. Está al mismo nivel que Meliora y se eleva por encima de él. En conjunto, es probablemente el mejor álbum de Ghost hasta la fecha.
Le doy un 10 a este álbum y lo pongo entre mis favoritos de todos los tiempos, mientras espero pacientemente y con grandes expectativas el siguiente. Eso ha sido todo. Les mando un abrazo enorme a todos.
