The good things of the WordPress are many, starting wth the huge community of teh users and developers, possibly the biggest out there. 
This means that you as an individual who runs WordPress won't run out of the resources and plugins of all kind imaginable fr your blog or community. 
Then, the WordPress is really easy to install and platform itself, hosted or self-hosted assures that all parts get updated to the newest fashion - unless if you don't want it like me. I prefer to have all things under control, so I check updates manually, otherwise something can go wrong and I hate when it happens. 
Publishing on WordPress is also very easy and you can customize almost everything. 
If you need help to achieve something with your website, you will find a lot of online resources, community forum and developer tools to do it.
