Calm

The stage is painted a serene blue. It’s like cerulean blue, but with more “s”, less “c”.

In the center of the stage sit a construction worker (C), a farm worker (F), and an unemployed woman (U), playing jacks. The game is fast-paced and exciting for them all.

U: Stars and stripes forever, baby. 4!
F: This is the moment that you’ll remember when you get a new job, Cassondra.
U: In the first instant you were born, you thought of stars. 5!
F: I did.
U: 6!... nope.
	U fails to get the 6, and passes the ball and jacks to C.
C: 1.
U: You’re morose.
C: 2.
F: She’s calm.
U: A frightened horse is unready for any fate that awaits it.
C: 3.
F: Ironically.
C: 4.
C: 5.
F: I don’t mean to judge.
U: She is herself.
C: I’m done.
F: We leave things as they are.
U: There’s always something else coming.
	Exeunt. C re-enters the empty stage, and resumes jacks alone.
C: 6.
	Lights out.
