<div class="pull-left"> Para lograr hacer este post, fue esencial reconocer mi vulnerabilidad a los sesgos cognitivos que me habían hecho relacionar, por muchos años, lo estético con lo superficial, lo superficial con lo frecuente, y lo frecuente con lo banal. De esta manera, logré romper una cadena de prejuicios que construí en el pasado inconscientemente, y que limitaban mi avance en el camino de la evolución intelectual. 
Fue complicado, pero después de muchas luchas contra mi propia mente, entendí que nada es lo suficientemente insignificante como para carecer de un análisis; y lo que muchas veces consideramos superficial, se puede convertir en un mar profundo que debemos explorar, para no sufrir una distorsión del pensamiento y de la personalidad, que nos limite a vivir emitiendo juicios inexactos y dar interpretaciones ilógicas a lo que sucede en nuestro entorno.</div>

<div class="pull-right">In order to make this post, it was essential to recognize my vulnerability to the cognitive biases that had made me relate, for many years, the aesthetic with the superficial, the superficial with the frequent, and the frequent with the banal. In this way, I managed to break a chain of prejudices that I had unconsciously built in the past, and that limited my progress on the path of intellectual evolution.
It was complicated, but after many struggles against my own mind, I understood that nothing is insignificant enough to lack analysis; and what we often consider superficial, can become a deep sea that we must explore, so as not to suffer a distortion of thought and personality, which limits us to live issuing inaccurate judgments and give illogical interpretations to what happens in our environment.</div>

<div class="pull-left">Se puede decir que el maquillaje tiene dos funciones primordiales: adornar con propósitos de identificación, como en el caso de jerarquías en un grupo o tribu, y resaltar la personalidad dentro de ese grupo especifico. De esta manera, en varias épocas y civilizaciones, el maquillaje ha servido a la humanidad como una forma de expresión.
Pero, ¿qué expresa, exactamente? Pues, en el caso de los faraones, en la antigua Egipto, lograba comunicar status social y poder. En aborígenes, durante ceremonias simbólicas y rituales espirituales, definían etapas temporales y estados de privilegio. Así mismo, el maquillaje estuvo presente como medio de comunicación en las guerras: los participantes acentuaban sus rasgos más temibles, haciendo de su cara un mensaje amenazador para el enemigo. 
Por otro lado, en actividades sociales dramáticas, como danzas folclóricas o representaciones teatrales, se usa para encarnar a otras personalidades. De esta manera, podemos concluir que además el maquillaje funciona reemplazando a las máscaras, proporcionándonos una segunda imagen que podemos crear y manipular según el mensaje que queramos transmitir.</div>

<div class="pull-right">It can be said that makeup has two primary functions: to adorn for identification purposes, as in the case of hierarchies in a group or tribe, and to highlight the personality within that specific group. Thus, in various eras and civilizations, makeup has served mankind as a form of expression. But what exactly does it express? Well, in the case of the pharaohs in ancient Egypt, it communicated social status and power. In aborigines, during symbolic ceremonies and spiritual rituals, it defined temporal stages and states of privilege. Likewise, makeup was present as a means of communication in wars: participants accentuated their most fearsome features, making their face a threatening message to the enemy. 
On the other hand, in dramatic social activities, such as folk dances or theatrical performances, it is used to embody other personalities. In this way, we can conclude that makeup also functions as a substitute for masks, providing us with a second image that we can create and manipulate according to the message we want to convey.

<div class="pull-left">Actualmente, la gran mayoría de la población adulta, desea ocultar los estragos del envejecimiento en la piel y perfeccionar facciones, para así proyectar una imagen que se adapte al canon de belleza representativo y válido por su cultura. Desde del siglo XX, se ha implantado una mayor importancia del aspecto físico; y por lo tanto, la industria cosmética y estética ha tenido un auge innegable. En este contexto, el protagonismo de la imagen sigue estando relacionada al status, ya que muchas formas de presentarse en sociedad, sólo pueden darse en círculos acomodados, donde el ocio y el bienestar económico, permiten esa preocupación casi obsesiva con la belleza. Sin embargo, existe otro factor determinante en la búsqueda de la belleza facial y corporal: el placer.</div>


<div class="pull-right">Currently, the vast majority of the adult population wishes to hide the ravages of aging in the skin and perfect features, in order to project an image that fits the canon of beauty representative and valid for their culture. 
Since the 20th century, greater importance has been placed on physical appearance, and therefore, the cosmetic and aesthetic industry has had an undeniable boom. In this context, the importance of image continues to be related to status, since many ways of presenting oneself in society can only occur in affluent circles, where leisure and economic well-being allow for this almost obsessive preoccupation with beauty. However, there is another determining factor in the search for facial and body beauty: pleasure.</div>

<div class="pull-left">La belleza se relaciona con el placer a través de las matemáticas y la neurociencia. Si, suena complicado; pero la verdad no lo es tanto. Diversos estudios han demostrado que la fascinación que sentimos al observar rostros y cuerpos que percibimos como “bellos o perfectos”, es similar a lo que sentimos al mirar las flores, lagos, ríos y playas; y esto tiene que ver con la adaptabilidad y la supervivencia. Amplío: las flores señalan la posibilidad de encontrar fruta, por ejemplo, y el agua nos indica vida y abundancia de alimento. 
En el caso de los rostros simétricos y los cuerpos con proporciones equilibradas, la atracción viene dada por la armonía; de esta manera, percibimos a estos individuos como “sanos” y la parte más primitiva de nuestro cerebro nos indica que habría éxito reproductivo.</div>

<div class="pull-right"> Beauty is related to pleasure through mathematics and neuroscience. Yes, it sounds complicated; but the truth is not so complicated. Several studies have shown that the fascination we feel when we observe faces and bodies that we perceive as "beautiful or perfect", is similar to what we feel when we look at flowers, lakes, rivers and beaches; and this has to do with adaptability and survival. Broad: flowers signal the possibility of finding fruit, for example, and water indicates life and abundance of food. In the case of symmetrical faces and bodies with balanced proportions, the attraction is given by harmony; thus, we perceive these individuals as "healthy" and the most primitive part of our brain tells us that there would be reproductive success.</div>

<div class="pull-left">Entonces, ¿maquillarnos en el siglo XXI nos hace superficiales? 
La imagen es el punto de partida para hablar de lo estético. A través de la vista, somos estimulados para experimentar el placer de lo bello. Entonces, culturalmente, siempre hemos hablado de belleza, refiriéndonos a objetos/imágenes que son etiquetados como obras de arte. De esta manera, se genera la relación asociativa entre la obra de arte y la imagen hermosa. Las palabras objeto, imagen y obra, restan humanidad; no obstante, nos hacen experimentar sensaciones que nos humanizan: placer, gozo, agrado. Sucede entonces, que estamos en un mundo lleno contradicciones conceptuales y morales: por un lado, los medios de comunicación masivos condenan de superficial a quien se perciba a sí mismo como un objeto bello o quiera proyectar una *imagen hermosa*; pero, por otro lado, difunden un concepto de autoestima que favorece la responsabilidad y cuidado individual con respecto al rostro y al cuerpo, relacionándolo con bienestar holístico y despertando nuevamente nuestro instinto de supervivencia. En lo personal, creo que la experiencia de lo estético implica una cosificación a través de la imagen; pero que esto no necesariamente resta profundidad al ser. De hecho, revela lo más humano: ganas de sobrevivir y expresarnos.</div>


<div class="pull-right">So, does putting on makeup in the 21st century make us superficial? The image is the starting point to talk about aesthetics. Through sight, we are stimulated to experience the pleasure of the beautiful. So, culturally, we have always talked about beauty, referring to objects/images that are labeled as works of art. In this way, the associative relationship between the work of art and the beautiful image is generated. The words object, image and work, subtract humanity; nevertheless, they make us experience sensations that humanize us: pleasure, joy, pleasure. It happens then, that we are in a world full of conceptual and moral contradictions: on the one hand, the mass media condemn as superficial whoever perceives himself as a beautiful object or wants to project a *beautiful image*; but, on the other hand, they spread a concept of self-esteem that favors individual responsibility and care with respect to the face and body, relating it to holistic well-being and reawakening our survival instinct. Personally, I believe that the experience of the aesthetic implies a reification through the image; but that this does not necessarily detract from the depth of being. In fact, it reveals what is most human: the desire to survive and express ourselves.</div>
