Me gustan las películas del género dramático, esas historias que retratan personajes cotidianos parecidos a los que uno se encuentra en cualquier parte. Las buenas se reconocen porque tienen un alto poder de resonancia, tocan vivencias subyacentes en nuestro interior. Se erigen ante nosotros como un espejo donde podemos mirar los retazos de la vida.
El director y guionista danés Martin Peter Zandvliet, nos deja en Applaus (2009), el drama de una exitosa mujer que, como le ha pasado a muchas personas, perdió el control de su vida por la adicción al alcohol.

Thea Barfoed (Paprika Steen) es una de las mejores actrices de teatro de Dinamarca, una celebridad conocida por todos.
Cada noche hace estremecer a los espectadores por su intensa interpretación de Martha, uno de los personajes principales de la obra “¿Quién le teme a Virginia Woolf?” En esta adaptación de la obra del dramaturgo norteamericano Edward Albee, la raíz de los conflictos entre Martha y George, su esposo, es precisamente el problema de Martha para controlar la bebida.
Thea se encuentra en un proceso de recuperación voluntario para superar su adicción, asiste con desgano a las reuniones de alcohólicos anónimos con la intención de mantenerse sobria. Su gran aspiración es poder recuperar de nuevo la custodia de sus dos hijos, la que perdió al no poder controlarse. Hace mucho tiempo que no ve a los niños.
Christian (Michael Falch), el ex esposo de Thea, está consciente que los niños necesitan a la madre, así que ha decidido programar una serie de encuentros supervisados. Como consecuencia de ese fracaso parece convencerse que necesita ayuda y emprenderá un largo viaje hacia un destino incierto…

El director Zandvliet, hace una propuesta interesante. La actriz que representa su propia vida, la obra dentro de la obra.
Los conflictos de Martha en la obra de teatro y los que vive Thea en la vida real tienen el mismo origen. La coincidencia es utilizada eficientemente en el montaje cinematográfico para sugerirnos momentos de la vida de Thea durante el matrimonio.
A intervalos se insertan en la narración fragmentos de sus actuaciones en el teatro. Con este recurso se proporciona al espectador el contexto necesario para acentuar el drama, ya que nos imaginamos el infierno por el que ha pasado la protagonista. Pero estos incisos no crean dificultades para la comprensión de la trama, puesto que la narrativa siempre sigue un orden lineal.
Volví de nuevo a esta película porque la recordé mientras veía hace poco [The lost Daughter]( https://peakd.com/hive-166847/@irvinc/the-lost-daughter-or-review-or-resena-espeng). Ambas tratan sobre mujeres que fracasan en su rol de madres. Pero hay diferencias entre Thea y Leda (la protagonista en The lost Daughter). La primera no tiene dudas sobre el profundo sentimiento que despiertan sus hijos en ella, la segunda sí.
El problema del alcoholismo es presentado en toda su crudeza. Y esta vez el efecto es más fuerte por tratarse de una madre, una mujer exitosa en su carrera artística, pero que no ha logrado echar adelante su vida afectiva.
En el imaginario común circula la idea que el problema del alcoholismo es un asunto principalmente de hombres, pero no es así. Si creo que afecte más a los hombres, sobre todo en una cultura machista como la de mi país, pero las mujeres también se cuentan entre las víctimas de esta adicción.
El director es poco condescendiente con Thea. Toda la narración busca destacar su inestable personalidad, como para que no quede dudas de su incapacidad para asumir el cuidado de los hijos. La percepción de inseguridad de la protagonista es alimentada por todos los que están a su alrededor, el esposo, el abogado, nadie confía en ella. No apuestan a que pueda mantenerse sobria. El mensaje subyacente parece ser: “cuidado, si caes en esto no hay vuelta atrás, estás irremediablemente perdido.”
La falta de apoyos y comprensión es un problema común de las personas en proceso de rehabilitación. Para recomponer la personalidad del adicto es fundamental el apoyo de los que le rodean. Una persona que se ha ido a pique necesita manos que le ayuden a levantarse. De otro modo es difícil que salga del foso.

Socialmente todavía hay dificultades en aceptar que el alcoholismo es realmente una enfermedad. Su tratamiento implica la intervención de profesionales capacitados. Pensar que el adicto puede salir de su condición por un simple ejercicio de voluntad es una creencia errónea.

A mi modo de ver hay vacíos importantes en el guión. No sabemos nada de cuánto tiempo tiene Thea separada de sus hijos. Diera la impresión que son muchos años, porque los niños se muestran distantes en su presencia. Además, pareciera haber algo traumático en el tiempo que vivieron con ella, puesto que no se sienten cómodos en su compañía. Thea tiene que buscar la forma de reconquistarlos como si fueran unos desconocidos. En la película no hay datos para saber cómo fue que llegaron a eso.
El trabajo actoral recae principalmente en Paprika Steen, quien hace una interpretación deslumbrante. La película pareciera diseñada para destacar su calidad como actriz de carácter. El trabajo de cámara se enfoca todo el tiempo en ella, buscando dar relevancia a sus expresivos y grandes ojos azules. La señora Paprika solo necesita mover sus ojos para transmitir una amplia gama de emociones. Su actuación es realmente memorable.
La película no es perfecta, tiene algunas debilidades, pero no dudo en recomendarla. Sí en algún momento se topan con ella traten de darle un visionado.
