Doy respuesta a la gentil [invitación]( https://peakd.com/hive-186119/@acont/el-entorno-da-forma-a-las-acciones-del-individuo-does-the-environment-shapes-peoples-action-or-iniciativa-humanitas) del amigo @accont para participar en la [pregunta semanal]( https://peakd.com/hive-186119/@eudemo/initiative-human-culture-week-2-psychology)  de la comunidad @humanitas. Esta semana la propuesta está dedicada a la psicología, en la versión del autor estadounidense  B.F. Skinner.

Supe de Skinner hace ya cincuenta años, cuando comenzaba mis estudios en el Pedagógico de Caracas. Por aquel entonces su último libro “Más allá de la libertad y la dignidad” era lectura obligatoria, porque en él Skinner plasmaba una visión del mundo acorde con lo que había sido su concepción de la psicología humana.

Skinner fue un autor genial, llevó los estudios sobre el conductismo a sus cotas más altas. Fue uno de los que incluyó el modelo experimental de la ciencia para el estudio de la psicología. Y logró desarrollar conceptos que habían frenado el avance del conductismo clásico. 

A Skinner debemos dos ideas fundamentales. El condicionamiento operante y la teoría del refuerzo.

 La primera nos habla de las diferentes formas en que los seres vivos adquieren las conductas; para el autor que estamos tratando las conclusiones obtenidas investigando con  ratas, perros, monos o palomas, son completamente extensibles a los seres humanos. Para él los procesos de adquisición de conducta son únicos, independiente de consideraciones como las creencias, los sentimientos o las dinámicas culturales.

La segunda idea, la teoría del refuerzo, nos habla de los diferentes mecanismos que hacen que las conductas adquiridas se mantengan o desaparezcan, mediante la utilización o no de mecanismos como la recompensa, el castigo, o la privación.

El gran problema de Skinner era cómo producir una sociedad eficiente, donde se pudieran predecir los resultados de las acciones humanas, para ello era indispensable el control de los sujetos. 

Su aspiración en cierto sentido es una gran obra de ingeniería. Lograr que los seres humanos se comporten como deben hacerlo, para que la sociedad pueda funcionar bien. Lo importante entonces es dar respuestas satisfactorias al entorno, no lo que pasa dentro del individuo. Y más bien buscar la manera de controlar o poner entre paréntesis todos aquellos aspectos que resultan inconvenientes como las pasiones, los sentimentos o las creencias. Algo muy cercano a los robots.

Debo aclarar que el pensamiento de Skinner es mucho más complejo y estructurado del mínimo resumen que yo pueda hacer en estas líneas.

Las ideas de Skinner pronto se aplicaron para lograr modificaciones en el comportamiento humano, logrando resultados sorprendentes. Sus estudios han servido para lograr el cambio  de hábitos como el tabaquismo, el consumo excesivo de alimentos y también para tratar  problemas como el insomnio. En esos casos la teoría del refuerzo funciona muy bien.

También los estudios de Skinner han tenido una gran aplicación en el campo militar. Gracias a los programas  de modificación de conductas empleados durante los períodos de entrenamiento se puede lograr, por ejemplo,  que los soldados y la fuerza pública no titubeen a la hora de disparar armas letales, dándole un uso más eficiente a los armamentos, aunque eso pueda resultar en un aumento de las muertes de inocentes, lo que sería considerado en términos actuales como “un daño colateral”.

Mientras escribo el texto me doy cuenta que en la práctica gubernamental de la Venezuela del siglo XXI hay mucho de las ideas skinnereanas. La revolución bolivariana ha manejado de manera muy eficiente la teoría del refuerzo para lograr anular las posibilidades de rebelión social y garantizar fidelidades políticas.

El mecanismo pareciera diseñado en algún laboratorio de psicología social. Se ha llevado a la población a la  máxima  privación posible, al borde de la inanición, manteniéndola en los límites mínimos de sobrevivencia. Luego se le administran  de forma sostenida dadivas como las bolsas del CLAP, los bonos,  o los ajustes de los salarios mínimos. Cuando la gente se ve con el agua al cuello, el gobierno lanza un salvavidas, eso lo ha aplicado una y otra vez. La eficacia de este sistema de control se ha hecho palpable en los últimos veintidós años. La población no ha logrado salir de ese círculo perverso.

Durante toda su vida Skinner dejó claro que en sus ideas no estaba presente ninguna ideología, que solo se trataba de ciencia, sin más, sin adjetivos de ningún tipo. ¿Una teoría pensada con el fin de lograr el control humano puede estar exenta de intenciones ideológicas…?

This week the proposal is dedicated to psychology, in the version of the American author B.F. Skinner.

I learned about Skinner fifty years ago, when I was beginning my studies at the Pedagogical School of Caracas. At that time his last book "Beyond Freedom and Dignity" was obligatory reading, because in it Skinner expressed a vision of the world in accordance with his conception of human psychology.

Skinner was a brilliant author, he took the studies on behaviorism to its highest heights. He was one of those who included the experimental model of science in the study of psychology. And he managed to develop concepts that had slowed down the advance of classical behaviorism.

To Skinner we owe two fundamental ideas. Operant conditioning and the theory of reinforcement.

 The first talks about the different ways in which living beings acquire behaviors; for the author we are dealing with, the conclusions obtained by researching with rats, dogs, monkeys or pigeons, are completely extensible to human beings. For him, the processes of behavior acquisition are unique, independent of considerations such as beliefs, feelings or cultural dynamics.

The second idea, the theory of reinforcement, tells us about the different mechanisms that make acquired behaviors to be maintained or disappear, through the use or not of mechanisms such as reward, punishment, or deprivation.

Skinner's great problem was how to produce an efficient society, where the results of human actions could be predicted, for which the control of the subjects was indispensable. 

His aspiration, in a certain sense, is a great work of engineering. To make human beings behave as they should, so that society can function well. The important thing then is to give satisfactory answers to the environment, not what happens inside the individual. And rather to look for the way to control or put in brackets all those aspects that are inconvenient such as passions, feelings or beliefs. Something very close to robots.

I must clarify that Skinner's thought is much more complex and structured than the minimum summary that I can make in these lines.

Skinner's ideas were soon applied to achieve modifications in human behavior, achieving surprising results. His studies have served to change habits such as smoking, excessive food consumption and also to treat problems such as insomnia. In these cases the theory of reinforcement works very well.

Skinner's studies have also had a great application in the military field. Thanks to the behavior modification programs used during training periods, it is possible to achieve, for example, that soldiers and public forces do not hesitate to fire lethal weapons, making a more efficient use of armaments, although this may result in an increase in the deaths of innocent people, which would be considered in current terms as "collateral damage".

As I write this text, I realize that in the governmental practice of Venezuela in the 21st century there is much of the ideas of Skinner. The Bolivarian revolution has handled in a very efficient way the theory of reinforcement in order to annul the possibilities of social rebellion and guarantee political loyalty.

The mechanism seems to have been designed in some social psychology laboratory. The population has been taken to the maximum possible deprivation, to the brink of starvation, keeping it within the minimum limits of survival. Then, handouts such as CLAP bags, bonuses, or minimum wage adjustments are administered in a sustained manner. When the people find themselves in the doldrums, the government throws a life preserver, this has been applied over and over again. The effectiveness of this control system has become palpable in the last twenty-two years. The population has not been able to get out of this perverse circle.

Throughout his life Skinner made it clear that no ideology was present in his ideas, that it was just science, no more, without adjectives of any kind. Can a theory designed for the purpose of achieving human control be free of ideological intentions...?
