La primera obra que leí de Stefan Zweig fue una biografía de María Antonieta, en la que presentaba con gran rigor histórico el período turbulento de la Revolución Francesa. En esa oportunidad me impresionó la profundidad psicológica que le dio al personaje.
Buscando textos cortos me encontré con esta extraordinaria obra del mismo escritor vienés, “Mendel el de los libros.” Escrito en mil novecientos veintinueve. Acá la trama transcurre en el período correspondiente a los años de la primera guerra mundial.
El relato se centra en el personaje de Jakob Mendel, un judío procedente de Polonia y que decide establecerse en Viena desde los años de su juventud.
Con el correr del tiempo Mendel se fue haciendo un experto bibliógrafo, conocía prácticamente todos los libros que se publicaban en Europa. En su privilegiada memoria se guardaba una exhaustiva base de datos sobre todo tipo de documentos. Era una referencia obligada para investigadores, escritores y todo aquel que estuviera interesado en saber cómo encontrar, y poseer, cualquier texto publicado.

Mendel era un personaje enigmático. Sus días transcurrían rutinariamente en el café Gluk, en un arrabal de Viena. Allí desde la mañana hasta la noche, de domingo a domingo, se dedicaba a leer incansablemente. Y solo suspendía momentáneamente su concentrada lectura para atender la solicitud de algún cliente interesado en encontrar alguna obra.
El mundo de Mendel se limitaba a la investigación bibliográfica. Fuera de eso nada le interesaba, prácticamente no tenía ningún conocimiento de lo que ocurría más allá del recinto que tenía reservado para sí en el interior del café Gluck.
Tal era su ensimismamiento que ni siquiera se enteró que había estallado una guerra y que él estaba en peligro porque nunca se ocupó de aclarar su situación legal como extranjero residenciado en Viena. La inocencia y despreocupación de Mendel le trajo grandes problemas que cambiaron la placidez con que había transcurrido su vida hasta ya entrada la vejez.

En la obra se destaca el papel que tienen los cafés para el desarrollo cultural de las ciudades. Eso para mí es algo desconocido, en mi país los cafés suelen ser lugares de paso donde a lo sumo se comparte una buena conversación con los amigos. Para nada es frecuente que alguien se instale largas horas en cualquier café a leer algún libro o a trabajar en algún proyecto personal. La verdad es que me causa curiosidad saber si todavía en Europa los cafés siguen siendo algo parecido a lo que se describe en el texto.
Un gran tema desarrollado en el libro es la intolerancia, que ha acompañado al género humano desde tiempos muy antiguos y que se mantiene muy viva aún en los días que corren.
Para Mendel parece no haber lugar en el mundo. No se respeta su derecho de hacer lo que le parezca, a dedicar todo su interés a los libros. Y aunque con su actividad no le hace mal a nadie, sino que más bien beneficia a los interesados por los libros, lo castigan por ser descuidado en los asuntos legales, por no tener sus documentos en regla, por no querer seguir el ritmo de una realidad que a sus ojos carece de interés. En el fondo hay un irrespeto a la libertad de decidir.
El autor también nos presenta las consecuencias de los cambios culturales. Para los primeros dueños del café Gluck, Mendel era una persona valiosa que dedicaba su tiempo a la difusión de la cultura. Por eso lo protegían, lo aceptaban y lo estimulaban a estar en el café cada día.

Pero una vez que el negocio cambia de manos, los nuevos dueños tienen otro interés. Ya no ven ningún valor en el viejo bibliógrafo, no le encuentran utilidad. Más bien lo ven como un estorbo, como alguien que desentona con los nuevos esquemas de moda para los cafés de la ciudad.
Este tipo de libros siempre me llaman la atención porque me permiten tener una idea de cómo era la vida en unos tiempos muy distintos a los nuestros. Donde la información estaba al alcance de muy pocos y circulaba de modo muy restringido. Pero la gente se las ingeniaba con revistas, suscripciones y visitas a expertos para mantenerse informados.
Ahora con el internet, en nuestro mundo globalizado, un personaje como Mendel casi no tendría ningún sentido. Sin embargo, las personas especializadas en un área de conocimiento siempre son consultadas por otros.
Si tienen la oportunidad dedíquenle unas pocas horas a esta pequeña joya de la literatura. Se las recomiendo.

Searching for short texts I came across this extraordinary work by the same Viennese writer, "Mendel the Bookman." Written in nineteen twenty-nine. Here the plot takes place in the period corresponding to the years of the First World War.
The story focuses on the character of Jakob Mendel, a Jew from Poland who decides to settle in Vienna in his youth.

As time went by, Mendel became an expert bibliographer, he knew practically all the books published in Europe. In his privileged memory he kept an exhaustive database of all kinds of documents. He was an obligatory reference for researchers, writers and anyone interested in knowing how to find, and own, any published text.
Mendel was an enigmatic character. His days were spent routinely at the Gluk café in a Vienna suburb. There, from morning to evening, from Sunday to Sunday, he read tirelessly. And he would only momentarily suspend his concentrated reading to attend to the request of a customer interested in finding a book.
Mendel's world was limited to bibliographic research. Apart from that, nothing interested him; he had practically no knowledge of what was going on beyond his own reserved space in the interior of the Café Gluck.
Such was his self-absorption that he did not even know that a war had broken out and that he was in danger because he never bothered to clarify his legal situation as a foreigner residing in Vienna. Mendel's innocence and carelessness brought him great problems that changed the placidity with which he had spent his life until late in his old age.

The work highlights the role that cafés play in the cultural development of cities. This is something unknown to me, in my country cafés are usually places to pass through where at most a good conversation is shared with friends. It is not at all common for someone to spend long hours in any café reading a book or working on a personal project. The truth is that I am curious to know if cafés in Europe are still something similar to what is described in the text.
A great theme developed in the book is intolerance, which has accompanied mankind since ancient times and is still very much alive today.
For Mendel there seems to be no place in the world. His right to do as he pleases, to devote all his interest to books, is not respected. And although his activity does no harm to anyone, but rather benefits those interested in books, he is punished for being careless in legal matters, for not having his documents in order, for not wanting to keep up with a reality that in his eyes lacks interest. In the end, there is a lack of respect for the freedom to decide.
The author also presents us with the consequences of cultural changes. For the first owners of the Café Gluck, Mendel was a valuable person who dedicated his time to the dissemination of culture. So they protected him, accepted him and encouraged him to be in the café every day.

But once the business changes hands, the new owners have another interest. They no longer see any value in the old bibliographer, they find no use for it. Rather, they see it as a nuisance, as someone who clashes with the new fashionable schemes for the city's cafés.
This type of book always attracts my attention because it gives me an idea of what life was like in times very different from our own. Where information was available to very few and circulated in a very restricted way. But people managed with magazines, subscriptions and visits to experts to keep themselves informed.
Now with the internet, in our globalized world, a character like Mendel would be almost meaningless. However, people who specialize in one area of knowledge are always consulted by others.
If you have the opportunity, dedicate a few hours to this little gem of literature. I highly recommend it.
