Son muchas las razones para ver de nuevo una película, tantas como personas hay. Me suele ocurrir que dando algún rápido vistazo a mi filmoteca de pronto me detengo en algún título y de allí a darle un visionado solo hay un paso. A lo mejor lo recordé luego de leer o ver algo, o quizá simplemente me fijé en él porque la última vez que pasé por ahí su caja quedó sobresaliendo. Nunca estoy seguro de por qué quise ver de nuevo una película. Repetirlas no es un problema para mí, entre otras cosas porque tengo muy mala memoria, por lo que no dejo de descubrir cosas nuevas en cada visionado.
Tenía mucho tiempo sin ver Minority Report, un excelente film de dos mil dos, dirigido por Steven Spielberg. La película está inspirada en un cuento de Philip K. Dick, uno de los grandes de la ciencia ficción norteamericana, pero la realización de Spielberg toma su propio camino en muchos aspectos…

En el año dos mil cincuenta y cuatro una corporación norteamericana, Precrimen, dedicada al negocio de la seguridad, ha desarrollado una tecnología que permite prevenir los homicidios. Para ello se apropiaron de los estudios de una investigadora que descubrió la capacidad de ver el futuro en algunos hijos de drogadictas. De todo ese grupo de muchachos solo sobrevivieron tres, dos gemelos y una mujer, los que fueron prácticamente secuestrados por la corporación.
Precrimen entonces desarrolló una tecnología para poder disponer en tiempo real de las imágenes que circulaban por la mente de los muchachos. Las visiones daban la fecha, el nombre de la víctima y el del perpetrador, pero no el lugar donde ocurrirían los hechos. Un grupo de policías altamente entrenados se encargaba de atar los cabos dejados en las imágenes para dar con el sitio donde se cometería el asesinato. De ese modo podían llegar antes de que se cometiera y acusaban al perpetrador por el crimen que no llegó a cometer.
Para que el sistema funcionara los tres muchachos debían estar conectados, de otro modo no podían ver el futuro. Y en teoría era imposible que se fuese a cometer un crimen sin que los muchachos lo visionaran. Pero aún en las condiciones más perfectas y supuestamente invulnerables, siempre hay alguien que sabe como hacer trampas.
Como el sistema ha sido tan efectivo en la ciudad de Washington, donde logró reducir a cero los asesinatos, se considera que está más que probada su eficacia. Es por eso que se propone la convocatoria a un plebicito nacional para aprobar su aplicación a escala nacional. Pero la fiscalía decide hacer una última investigación antes de cederle la seguridad de la nación a una empresa privada.
Es así como llega a Precrimen el agente Danny Witwer (Colin Farrell), enviado por la fiscalía. Allí se encuentra con el jefe de la unidad policial John Anderton (Tom Cruise), quien es el experto en sacar las conclusiones que permitan encontrar los sitios donde se cometerían los asesinatos. Desde el principio hay una gran rivalidad entre estos dos hombres, porque el agente Witwer duda de la eficacia de Precrimen.

En medio de la investigación el jefe Anderton va a dar con un cabo suelto, lo que le va a generar dudas sobre lo infalible del sistema creado por la corporación. Estas dudas crecen cada vez más al punto de amenazar los intereses del Director y creador de la corporación, Lamar Burgess (Max von Sydow), un personaje con el que Anderton tiene fuertes lazos afectivos ya que fue su suegro. A partir de este momento se van a desencadenar una serie de sucesos que van a poner al jefe Anderton en una carrera desenfrenada para tratar de mantenerse con vida…

Una de las cosas que siempre me llaman la atención cuando veo la película es su gran realización. Spielberg logra crear un mundo futurista muy creíble, donde abundan detalles como carros voladores, autopistas que vencen las leyes de la física, pantallas holográficas, el uso de fragmentos de cristal para la conservación de la información.
Pero este mundo a la vez que futurista resulta muy cercano. Hay detalles que nos hacen sentir la cercanía: algunos personajes viven en edificios ultrafuturistas y otros en casas de ladrillos; usan nuestras mismas herramientas como las tijeras, comen comidas similares a las nuestras y nadan en piscinas normales como las que puede haber en cualquier ciudad. Ese truco de fusionar lo cercano y lo imaginable hace que el film funcione muy bien.
También la historia es muy llamativa. Eso de predecir el futuro es uno de los grandes deseos del ser humano, poder anticipar lo que viene es un sueño de todas las épocas. Y si a esa posibilidad de anticipar el futuro le agregamos que pueda usarse para una causa noble, como lo es la seguridad de las personas, pues tenemos un tema con el que es fácil coincidir.
Sin embargo, la película nos alerta sobre las consecuencias de una posibilidad como esa y nos deja grandes interrogantes: ¿Y si estamos anticipando algo que no va a ocurrir…? ¿Podemos juzgar por anticipado un crimen que no se ha cometido…?
Hay mucho de terrible en el mundo que se pinta en Minority Report, algo que por cierto no está muy lejos de las intenciones de una buena parte de los dirigentes de la actualidad.
Es impresionante como en solo veinte años lo propuesto en el film ya es casi una realidad. En la película se anticipa el futuro por medio de un poder telepático que adquirieron de forma fortuita unos sujetos, fue el azar el que abrió esa posibilidad.
Pero en nuestros días esa predictibilidad se está logrando por medio de la tecnología. Los gobiernos y las corporaciones cada día avanzan más en el uso de la inteligencia artificial, los algoritmos sofisticados y los análisis de Big Data para predecir nuestro comportamiento, con la finalidad de manipularnos y controlarnos.

En ciudades de los Estados Unidos y Europa la masificación de las cámaras de vigilancia se utiliza para mantener en estado de sospecha algunos sectores “problemáticos”, creando una expectativa de peligro que pudiera no corresponderse con la realidad.
En China, ciudades como Pekín, tienen todos los espacios públicos copados con sistemas de vigilancia. Cada ciudadano figura en multitud de bases de datos, donde los analistas pueden llegar a las conclusiones más descabelladas. El estudio de los movimientos frecuentes de las personas puede ser motivo suficiente como para dejarlo confinado a un solo espacio y prohibirle el derecho, que allá no existe, de la libertad de movimiento.
La alerta dejada en el film no es como para tomarla a la ligera…

La película cuenta con grandes actuaciones. Tom Cruise desarrolla un personaje muy humano, con los conflictos propios de una persona que ha sufrido una gran pérdida y que aún así, con ese dolor de fondo, trata de entregarse con pasión a una causa en la que cree. Acá el actor logra transmitir una gama de emociones que van desde la admiración al desencanto, desde la alegría hasta el terror de enfrentar la muerte.
Colin Farrell, muy joven en ese tiempo, también logra una actuación más que meritoria, encarnando a un agente tenaz que llega hasta el final para cumplir con la misión encomendada. La veteranía de Max von Sydow, se deja ver en su papel del frío y calculador dueño de la gran corporación. Los actores del reparto le dan mucha fuerza al desarrollo de la trama.
Minority Report es un film que puede gustar a muchos públicos, a los amantes de la ciencia ficción, a los que gustan de los Thrillers bien construidos con giros insospechados en la trama y desenlaces imprevistos, a los que les gustan las historias profundas y que dejan muchas ideas para la reflexión. En mi opinión es una gran película que vale la pena ver más de una vez. Se las recomiendo.

I had a long time without seeing Minority Report, an excellent film of two thousand two, directed by Steven Spielberg. The film is inspired by a story by Philip K. Dick, one of the greats of American science fiction, but Spielberg's realization takes its own path in many aspects...

In the year two thousand and fifty-four an American corporation. PreCrime, dedicated to the security business, has developed a technology that can prevent homicides. To do so, they based themselves on the studies of a researcher who discovered the ability to see the future in some children of drug addicts. Of the group of children, only three survived, two twins and a woman, who were practically kidnapped by the corporation.
Precrime then developed a technology to make available in real time the images that circulated in the minds of the boys. The visions gave the date, the name of the victim and the name of the perpetrator. A group of highly trained police officers were in charge of tying up the loose ends left in the images to find the place where the murder would be committed. That way they could arrive before the murder was committed and charge the perpetrator for the crime he did not commit.
For the system to work, the three boys had to be connected, otherwise they could not see the future. And in theory it was impossible for a crime to be committed without the boys seeing it. This is how agent Danny Witwer (Colin Farrell), sent by the prosecution, arrives at PreCrime. One of the things that always strikes me when I watch the film is its great filmmaking. Spielberg manages to create a very credible futuristic world, where details abound such as flying cars, highways that overcome the laws of physics, holographic screens, the use of crystal fragments for the preservation of information.
But this futuristic world is also very close to us. There are details that make us feel the closeness: some characters live in ultra-futuristic buildings and others in brick houses; they use our same tools such as scissors, eat food similar to ours and swim in normal pools like those that can be found in any city. That trick of merging the close and the imaginable makes the film work very well.
The story is also very striking. That of predicting the future is one of the great desires of the human being, to be able to anticipate what is coming is a dream of all times. And if to this possibility of anticipating the future we add that it can be used for a noble cause such as the safety of people, then we have a theme with which it is easy to agree.
However, the film warns us about the consequences of such a possibility and leaves us with big questions: What if we are anticipating something that is not going to happen...? Can we judge in advance a crime that has not been committed...?
There is much that is terrible in the world depicted in Minority Report, something that is certainly not far from the intentions of many of today's leaders.

It is impressive how in only twenty years what is proposed in the film is already almost a reality. In the film, the future is anticipated by means of a telepathic power that some subjects acquired by chance; it was chance that opened up this possibility.
But nowadays this predictability is being achieved by means of technology. Governments and corporations are advancing every day in the use of artificial intelligence, sophisticated algorithms and big data analysis to predict our behavior, in order to manipulate and control us.
In cities in the United States and Europe, the massification of surveillance cameras is used to keep some "problematic" sectors in a state of suspicion, creating an expectation of danger that may not correspond to reality.
In China, cities such as Beijing have all public spaces covered with surveillance systems. Every citizen is listed in a multitude of databases, where analysts can reach the wildest conclusions. The study of the frequent movements of people can be reason enough to confine them to a single space and prohibit them the right, which does not exist there, to freedom of movement.
The warning left in the film is not to be taken lightly...

The film has great performances. Tom Cruise develops a very human character, with the conflicts of a person who has suffered a great loss and yet, with that pain in the background, tries to devote himself passionately to a cause he believes in. Here the actor manages to convey a range of emotions that go from admiration to disenchantment, from joy to the terror of facing death.
Colin Farrell, very young at the time, also delivers a more than creditable performance, playing a tenacious agent who goes to the very end to accomplish the mission at hand. Max von Sydow's veteran character, Max von Sydow, comes through in his role as the cold and calculating owner of the big corporation. The actors of the cast give a lot of strength to the development of the plot.
Minority Report is a film that can appeal to many audiences, to science fiction lovers, to those who like well constructed thrillers with unexpected plot twists and unexpected outcomes, to those who like deep stories that leave many ideas for reflection. In my opinion it is a great movie, worth watching more than once, I recommend it.
